Palm Pilot?

legodude522 @ 1/9/2006 3:20:16 PM # Q
The term "Palm Pilot" is unpolitically correct. I cringe everytime someone says it or I have to say it to make someone understand.
Due to a trademark infringement lawsuit brought on by the Pilot Pen Corporation, the second generation in 1997 was named PalmPilot. From 1998 on, they were known simply as Palm but "PalmPilot" has entered the vernacular as a synonym for PDAs, regardless of the brand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Pilot

Legodude get used to the term. It's been around too long. Just because the industry doesn't recognize "palm pilot" doesn't mean the term no longer gets used.

Think of it as using the word dude. That term hasn't been used since the mid-nineties, but you still use it.

PalmPilot is oldspeak. Double-plus negative.

Actually, folks who dont know still call them palm pilots, lest they get email and have a keyboard and they are blackberries. Its just the way people are. anything that was ever successful in marketing as a term will marr that product and its iterations for the duration of that segment in the non-fanitical crowds ;)

I know that it isn't politically correct to call my PDA a "PalmPilot," but truth be told, I like the term better than simply saying, "Palm." Trust me, you get alot less snickering when you say "I love playing with my PalmPilot" than when you say the alternative.

Some people I know still call refrigerators "Frigidaires" and all video game consoles are referred to as "Nintendo". Then there's the usual catch-all examples such as Coke, Kleenex, Clorox etc. where a class-leading brand is applied to all similar products in that segment.

"PalmPilot" is interesting in that it was actually used for just TWO products in Palm Inc's history (PalmPilot Personal & PalmPilot Pro). There were indeed two Pilot devices (1000 & 5000) and numerous Palm/PalmOne models but somehow, PalmPilot just has "stuck".

I agree with Twizza's comment too...."Treo" has caught on FAIRLY well...even, in places like VZW corporate stores, eclipsing "Palm" much in the way that Mac has eclipsed Apple Computer (ie the brand has leapfrogged the corporate entity in public awareness/identity).

Palm is definitely on the right track with trying to reinforce/emphasize the Palm branding but needs to keep the Treo name in the spotlight as well IMO.

Pilot 1000-->Pilot 5000-->PalmPilot Pro-->IIIe-->Vx-->m505-->T|T-->T|T2-->T|C-->T|T3-->T|T5-->TX

Nice, Two PUGs This Month in DC Metro

twizza @ 1/9/2006 4:35:01 PM # Q
Nice to hear this is going on. With this one and the one this Thurs on the MD side of the DC Metro, there should be plenty to keep folks palming in the area. I will be at a Treo PUG this Thurs, so that will be kinda fun (only the second or third pug in my life ironically).
