Actually, I like my Access-as-a-better-Symbian theory the best: Great OS + huge app library + good developer community + fair developer tools; without overbearing spectre of Nokia trying to run the show = instant mobile platform IF packaged with ALL the ingredients (as I've previously suggested that PalmSource have rolled into PalmOS). It wouldn't take a lot of effort to make PalmOS into a killer mobile platform. PalmSource was too clueless to see this. A better-run company might have better luck.

Might I suggest you rent "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"? And maybe you need to add "Write a viable mobile OS" to your to do list? It's time to worry when former PalmOS users can't even bother complaining because they simply no longer care. For the project as a whole, that'd have been Wayne Maretsky doing the "overseeing", such as it was. I simply worked on networking issues related to it at the time as an individual contributor/tech lead, along with a number of others—this was at least two years prior to my taking over management of the Mac OS 9 Networking team.

Foremost among the differences between these two projects is that Cobalt GM'd, twice, 6.0 and 6.1. I worked on both releases, and I use a device running Cobalt as my main handheld—and no, I won't tell you which off-the-shelf PDA I reflashed to enable that, I'm just fortunate that way—and it's a very good operating system, with some significant advantages over "stock" Linux on that type of device and some neat innovations.

The reasons it didn't get into the marketplace are complex, and I'm not going to get into 'em, but it was certainly not because it was a project that never finished (as was Copland) or that it was simply "crappy."

Just thought you should know.

The reasons it didn't get into the marketplace are complex, and I'm not going to get into 'em, but it was certainly not because it was a project that never finished (as was Copland) or that it was simply "crappy."

This isn't exactly the impression I got from your former hardware division, nor from your own people. The stuff I've heard from Palm, and from PSRC on the occasion of the Cobalt 6.1 release, was that the reason Cobalt never made it was because it was effectively half an operating system. That it got pushed out the door prematurely back in 2003 to comply with the artificial marketing deadline, and it wasn't in a state nearly suitable for actual use. Limited driver support, nearly no phone function stack, buggy application compatibility, and features missing right and left, even after you subtract the things like a file system and new UI that PSRC cut earlier in the development. If you have a reply to this, I'd love to hear it.

Getting driver support, something we'd hoped we wouldn't wind up being solely responsible for, was indeed one of the issues which proved to be problematical, as was learning curve in general; this was one of major factors in making a move to Linux attractive.

For the record, Cobalt incorporated full file system support from its initial release, as well as including a NAND-optimized version of the LFS file system in v6.1.

As far as its being "half an operating system," we worked closely with several licensees on devices that--while they haven't made it to market, again for a variety of reasons that I'm not in a position to discuss--were for all practical purposes ready to go.

Oswin demoed their version at the developers' conference last year, and there were several other efforts. Again, I'm not in a position to go into specifics, but I can say that none of 'em had to do with failures or lacks on the part of the software.

Really? That Oswin phone operated like a pig that had just been pumped full of tequila and Rohypnol (as often happens on Mexican farms during the months that the women have migrated north to the Napa Valley for our wine harvest).

Getting driver support, something we'd hoped we wouldn't wind up being solely responsible for, was indeed one of the issues which proved to be problematical, as was learning curve in general; this was one of major factors in making a move to Linux attractive.

For the record, Cobalt incorporated full file system support from its initial release, as well as including a NAND-optimized version of the LFS file system in v6.1.

I can't take responsibility for vague statements from unidentified folks.

Wish I could find that old briefing PowerPoint they sent us for the Cobalt 6.1 release. Besides C6.1, it also talks about the 11 Palm OS smartphones to be released in the first quarter of 2005. I can find my other briefing packets, but not the one from Palm for that day. Dang.

In any event, I won't attribute specific statements to people, because I'm working strictly from memory, and I wouldn't want to get it wrong. But I have had it from PalmSource people that the 6.0 release of Cobalt was not in the condition it should have been for a released product, which was one of the reasons for going back and doing the revisions that were done in 2004.

Re: the lack of devices having nothing to do with software, I just find it rather suspicious that for all these devices from different companies, different designs, and different technologies, the two things that they had in common was that they were Cobalt based, and they failed to reach even a certification stage.

- Instability
- Sluggish performance
- Heavy hardware requirements (minimun 400 - 500 MHz CPU)
- Wonky multithreading/problematic memory allocation (crash and BURN, Baby! BURN!)
- Missing telephony (Sprint? Can you hear me? Can you HEAR ME!)
- Lack of drivers (an oft-quoted, "convenient" excuse)
- Lack of raison d'etre (no Cobalt-specific apps -> no need for Cobalt)
- PalmOS 5 (a known quantity) was hackable to near-Cobalt specs (Helloooooooo Tapwave!) without all the Cobalt headaches.
- Loss of confidence in PalmSource. Licensees realized they were being suckered by the old shell game and decided to cut their losses when the delays/excuses started
- Freakish new coding skillset required for Cobalt-specific apps + no serious commercial app coding environment available
- Lack of true multitasking - oops! (You mean multithreading isn't "almost as good"???)
- It was too little too late to compete with the upcoming Windows Mobile 5

and...
- It smelled of Be engineers (the smell of death)

I am writing to update you regarding the settlement proceedings. As you know, this litigation was brought in connection with data loss in Palm m100 series PDA's (upon battery replacement). The case was settled successfully on November 18, 2006. The settlement allows owners of defective PDAs to receive a replacement unit (refurbished or new, depending on Palm's inventory) of equal or greater value. We beleive this is a fantastic recovery that has real value. To receive a replacement unit, claimants must use the "Final Claim Form" found on the taylorsettlement.com web site. The deadline was originally in February 2006. The NEW deadline is July 16, 2006. All claim forms are to be sent to:

Please note, claim forms should NOT be sent to our office. Palm, Inc. is administrating claims out of Minnesota, and this Minnesota office must receive the claim forms!!!

I understand that many claimants sent in their claim form months ago. Please do not feel as though you have been forgotten. A national claims process takes some time to get up and running. Palm assures us they are working hard to prepare the administration of claims, and that claimants who have submitted a claim form will soon be contacted.

At this point in time, our office has not been made aware of which claim forms have been received by Palm. I apologize, but we are unable to investigate on your behalf. My only suggestion to those who are concerned their paperwork was lost is to send a second claim form (a copy) via certified mail with a note explaining its purpose.

Thank you for patience in this matter. I firmly believe you will be happy with the result. And certainly, if you have a consumer issue like this in the future, we would be happy to investigate.
