"Expanding" works just fine, considering the store still sells Palm OS and Pocket PC software, and barring some catastrophic failure of technology will continue to do so. :P

Is there an equivalent to Palm's Find on WM Smartphone?

On the topic of transition, is there an equivalent to Palm's Find button on Windows Mobile, something that will allow me to find a word or phrase in any of the files on the smartphone? It's something I find very useful on my Palm. At the very least I'd like a search function that will look for the phrase in calendar, contacts, tasks, emails, pdfs, word and excel documents but a global find a la Palm will be ideal.

If only there was a Palm OS smartphone with wi-fi or European 3G then I'd be avoiding all this hassle, but that's a topic for another story!

Yes, in most files generated by native software, but its not guaranteed for 3rd party software.

Interesting that I had exactly the same question when I tried WM5 simulator. And you are right that's a very very useful feature on PalmOS. Because it searches *all* the programs. Very practical feature (and essential) for a PDA. I think PalmOS's file system is based on database like records and feilds, which makes it even easier for searching purposes.

If I'm not mistaken I remember reading something somewhere some-long-time ago ;) or it is just my impression of the Find on PalmOS that the Find function actually calls each program on its "searchable programs list" and tells it "search within yourself with these parameters" And if the program is 'searchable' then it would search in itself and would return the results (if found of course).

If this is the case, this might be a good thing to implement on WM machines too. So you'd have one centralized searching function. Specially for WM machines that each program has its own complicated data-structure this feature seems to be even more essential.

And yes that's a problem on WM machines! The Search function seems to be searching only through a limited built-in programs. There are file searching programs which search through the content of files but I didn't find them useful in our case.
