Palm...all over the place....

Originally announced for a "mid" August release in Australia, backed up by a splash ad on the Palm - Australia site with a frustrating "Coming Soon!" link, following the splash ad, and now it's available for Vodafone Treo 750v in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands? Those guys were never even mentioned for available upgrades (LoL)! When will our Australian neighbors get their deserts? Who knows...but as a current AT&T 750 owner, I'm not holding my breath!

When will our Australian neighbors get their deserts?

You mean half of Australia being desert isn't enough for them?

On a serious note, I think this is actually a good sign from Palm, they've got their Windows Mobile 6 update out faster than most other manufacturers.

^^ I will hopefully be receiving a review unit 750 w/ the WM6 update from Palm Australia sometime next week. It's definitely not far off, at any rate.

Tim;

Did they indicate when/if the 750 would be shipping in quantity with WM6 pre-installed? I had really expected for Palm to make a pretty strong marketing push for that as a mid-life refresh for that device, as an OS update + maybe a lil' ol' price drop can go a long way for making an otherwise solid but uninspiring handset a bit more appealing.

If I were Palm I'd simply start shipping 'em all with WM6 standard, replace the lame 1200mAh battery with a Palm-branded 1400 or 1500mAh same-size version (ie no rumpshaker!), and drop the price by $50 (or equivalent elsewhere in the world). Call it the 750wx or 750x or something and you have a "new" model to hold the fort for another 6-9 months until something with a 320x320 LCD for GSM carriers is ready for release!

For the record, I've NEVER seen a 750 in the wild here in the States. I see a fair amount of 680s, quite a number of 700p/w/wx's (hard to tell which one it is when it's crammed into a belt case or up against someone's ear) and still a solid number of old 650's in service.

^^ One person told me (unofficially) that the updates en masse - including those for other carriers - were being held back while they tested compatibility with Telstra's network. (The '3' network, for instance, roams onto Telstra's in areas where they don't have coverage.) They're hoping to have review units available either this week or next and the update should be available at around the same time.

It's quite odd how Palm OS can't seem to gain traction anywhere outside the States. I suppose it's all a marketing thing. I see a 650 here or there, but I never saw many Treos in the wild until the 750 came along. Incidentally, Palm are finally offering the Crimson 680 over here - for $800. Which means that even with the cost of getting a personal shopper and setting up a U.S. mailing address, it was still cheaper getting one from the States. (worked out at about AUD $550 if I remember correctly) It's also not available on any carriers here, just unlocked through Palm and a few retailers - which is probably another reason there aren't all that many around.

update available for treo bought outside of plan

nanavati1 @ 9/4/2007 2:00:42 AM # Q
hi,
the treo 750 is not available in India (where i stay) so i called for it from a palm vendor who arranged it with some passenger. i have got the warranty bill and everything for the palm 750 and also registered it with palm registration. i was interested in updating to WM6 so was led to this page after some serious digging on the web. i want to know if any such update is available outside of a contract/plan with a service carrier like a general upgrade/update from palm. FYI- i think the palm is bought from singapore.

thanks,

Kunal

The 750 WM6 update is currently available to European users via Palm Europe's support page:

http://tinyurl.com/2589nv

The update for "Generic Non Branded" devices is listed as "Coming Soon". I'd keep an eye out for that one. (Even though it's for European devices, in theory it will work on any unlocked 750 - Aussie 750 owners were reporting that the recently leaked American update was working fine on their Treos.)
