Hmmm...

I wonder if this means that Palm is planning some new devices or just trying to get rid of their last few PDAs once and for all...

Nope it is back to school sales. But at least they are offering SD cards with the purchase, trying to drum up program sales?

Notice the margins on the Z-22 are so low that it wasn't included in the sale.

You don't seem to think they are going to dump the PDAs. Do you think it is worth getting the TX now that it is $50 off? I'd like to have one but I'm afraid they will decide to discontinue it.

I know I'm responding to my own comment, but the Palm website says:
"Offer only valid while supplies last and is limited to models/styles available."
Which begs the question are they getting rid of the TX (and E2)?

Why does potentially discontinuing a product stop you from buying it when a sale comes? Lets say they do hypothetically stop producing all PDA's next week. Yours is still good, and by law, they have to support it for 7 years (support means if it ever fails, they must repair or replace it with an equal or higher model - If no higher model exists, they refund you).

Going...Going...

Alas, I think these cash cows are finally out of milk. I don't think we've heard a single word from Palm of late affirming that new/enhanced PDAs are forthcoming - just new Treos and the (Uber-brick) Foleo. I think it's safe to say the PDA's going the way of the dinosaur - Palm PDAs are just the latest species to croak.

As to whether to buy now, don't rush. After all, there's sill a decent market for Newtons & Psions, and there's a WHOLE lotta ol' Palms around...

Read this article and you will see a slight glimmer of hope that there may one day be a new Palm PDA only device.

Nobody wants an iPhone w/o the Phone

Nobody wants an iPhone w/o the phone...and by "nobody" I mean the internet is full of people who would would love a freaking iPhone without the phone, in other words a cool PDA!!! The market is not dead...it's just dying for 2, 3 and 5 year old products, duh!

LOL, I wish

I wish there was an iPhone without the phone, but a 30+ GB HD in it instead.

My PDA needs are not complex, I just want something to take down notes and ideas, web and email via wifi, and of course music and movies. And of course install 3rd party apps which is already easy without Apple's official seal of approval.

I know it would cost $500 or $600, but I would start saving the money...

I know it's late

and I haven't been watching TX prices lately.

Is it urgent that I jump on this, or do you think a deal like this will come around again?

TIA

Jack

You're in luck. I just worked up a news item on a sale this week at Best Buy on the TX & E2. The TX is now $250 out the door at BB. No free memory card but you can get a faster/larger one oneline instead of that slow 2GB one they were offering a few weeks ago.

I'd personally go on ahead and buy a TX now. It looks like Palm's liquidating the final stocks of PDAs for the back to school season. I'd expect one more big push prior to the holidays and then that'll be it for classic Palm handhelds. I'd expect, if anything, Palm to go ahead and probably drop the TX to $250 permanently followed by the E2 to $150 and Z22 to $75.
