Comments on: Palm Releases Daylight Saving Time Updates

Palm has posted updates for both Palm OS and WIndows Mobile devices to add compatibility with the new Daylight Saving Time changes. Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time (DST) starts on the second Sunday in March (March 11, 2007), and changes back to standard time on the first Sunday in November (November 4, 2007).

Palm devices, both smartphones and handhelds, need to be updated so that they reflect the correct time when the new DST changes take effect. Without the Daylight Saving Time Updates, calendar events and email messages will indicate an hour off the actual time in locations that observe DST. You can download the update for your device from Palm Support.

What about older devices?

PacManFoo @ 2/22/2007 8:08:19 AM # Q
So this update is for devices going back to the Tungsten T2. Does that mean that T1 and Previous models do not nead an update. I sure don't understand Palms update philosophy.

PDA's Past and Present:
Palm - IIIxe, Vx, M500, M505, Tungsten T, TX
Handspring - Edge, Platinum
Sony - SJ22
Apple - MP2000, MP2100

I do not recall when DST support was added to Palm OS. I think it was Palm OS 4.0. I know it was not in 1.0 or 2.0. I am pretty sure it was not in 3.0.

However, I do known that the TT had a DST related bug, which if not fixed would probably render this fix ineffective. On the TT, one could set the time/date and time zone. At that point the TT would correctly change it's time at the next DST change over date (however at midnight instead of 2:00am). However, if one ever soft-reset the device before the next change over (by hitting the reset button, because of a program fault, or by installing a system extension), the automatic change over would not happen.

You can use DST panel as well for the older devices.

For the TT, you can manually set the DST rule. Palm has instructions for doing this at http://tinyurl.com/2dddwv

(or go to the Palm Support web site, enter model TT, search for Daylight Savings Time, read article 23151 on DST for Palm OS 5.0 devices)

I just did it ... although I won't know if it worked until March 11 :-)

Do not blindly install this update without first reading the article. The article recommends applying certain Desktop OS and application patches before applying this Palm OS patch.

This may a dumb question...but my Treo sycns the time with the Verizon network, Doesn't that mean the time gets updated automatically? So why would I need this update?

Not a dumb question at all. I wonder the same thing.

You still need the update becuase Datebook app depends on the DST start/end time from the device for calendar events, if you checked the preference box for "New events use time zones".

E2 update

The palm download site says to save this file in 'Applications'. I'm not really experienced with Windows, but I don't find such a folder. Where is it? If this is not correct, where should I save it to? My WinXP does have the new patch.

That's for the Over-the-air update option. If you are using PC to download the update, just hotsync it or use SD card.

Also make sure you *run* this update applcation. It is not a patch so you will have to explicitly run it.

So satisfying to get up today and see "Your Palm has been updated for Daylight Savings Time". Not all the systems I use were so punctual, and many systems (Unix, Mainframe, Cicso IP Phones, etc.) did not update without manual intervention, (some didn't update at all......) All Palm 3rd party app's should be so good. I hope Palm continues with PDA's for the existing market, regardless of OS. Not a phone - a powerfull shirt-pocket PDA.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is it possible that Palm has the most Blazer unfriendly site on the web?

No wap pages? They put the link for a .prc on a page that takes forever to load on my creaky T600. I go shopping for a new phone on their site and can't see 1/2 of it on my phone.

Ebay sends me to a wap site for goodness sake. Guess all their programers are buzy on that T700p update.
