Comments on: BestBuy Stores Offering $39 Centro This Week

Pink Palm CentroWe've received a number of reader reports that some BestBuy retail locations are offing a large discount on the Palm Centro with new service signups. The Centro with Sprint service is being advertised in select areas for $39.99 after a $50 "additional savings" discount and a new two year service agreement.

Apparently the offer varies from region to region with some ads showing all 3 colors on sale (red, black and pink), while others area show only the red Centro. Some sale circulars do not even mention the promotion. Let us know in the comments if your store or area is is offering the discounted price.

It should be noted that no rebate is involved - this is "instant savings" price.

If you see the actual circular rather than the individual Centro ad linked from that circular, you'll see that all three colors are being offered for that price.

Looks to be the same pricing in southern NC and upstate SC as well. Interesting, as I just saw a local BB carrying the Centro for the first time (in any color) 2 weeks ago.

When we reported on that that $49 Centro pre-Christmas sale, no Centros were available in my area at any price in BB stores. And the BB flyer for my area that week had a blank area w/ text where other parts of the country (NY, west coast) had the Centro displayed prominently.

At any rate, this is a very enocuraging sign. Glad to see Palm and Sprint being aggressive. Hopefully the GSM Centro's launch will keep the momentum going...

Last-ditch push by Sprint?

Marshall Flinkman @ 2/4/2008 3:01:55 PM # Q
It sounds like Sprint wants to get in a push while they're still the only carrier offering the Centro. If it launches on AT&T in the next few weeks, they'll have too much competition from people who don't want to switch or who want off of Sprint.

It has been suggested elsewhere that Sprint, losing their exclusivity, is trying to grab as many more customers as they can before then.

Sprint needs to do this, they are bleeding customers as we speak....

I called BB, and they said it's $39.99 + $32 for activation

jeffhoward001 @ 2/4/2008 4:21:22 PM # Q
So it's really $72, so it doesn't make a ton of sense for existing Sprint customers. If you're an existing customer, you can upgrade through a Sprint store for $99, and you don't have to pay the $32 activation fee.

Does that sound right to you guys? I don't recall paying an "activation fee" on the last cell phone I bought... Is that something new?

Can you elaborate on that "upgrade" fee of $99?

How could an existing customer get it at anything less than full retail price of $399 unless they are very close (within 2-3 months) of the end date of their contract and want to re-up?

Other than calling Retentions and making big fuss with them or threatening to cancel etc, I mean.

Sorry, I should have said that. Yes, you can "re-up" another 2-yr and get the price of $99. I don't have a problem in committing for another two years since an unlimited EVDO data plan is only $25/mo, and the Sprint EVDO network has the best data coverage in the PacNW.

Just think how antiquated Garnet & the Centro will be in 2 years' time...I'm really surprised they don't push 1year plans. Even with drastically lower subsidies, I think there would be a fair amount of takers for a 1yr contract + $200 Centro (vs. a 2yr plan & a $40 Centro).

I mean, for those that know what they are getting into and are fine with ol' FrankenGarnet until 2010, then by all means jump on this deal.

But I remember thinking that when the 700w launched 2 years ago last month that it was already looking horribly dated...and the 700p a few months later only reinforced that. At least the Centro is devoid of the show-stopping bugs that plagued the 700p and comes at a MUCH more palatable asking price along with a much more generous software bundle.

Sprint does not care that the formfactor and the OS are out of date... they are looking for new fresh subscribers. Sprint needs retention so they are pushing the 2yr plan, OH! lets not forget that Sprint wants that subsidy money back plus some.

Sprint does have very good coverage and good prices on data, but Customer service is not real good....if you have a problem, it can get ugly trying to deal with them.
