Glad you're back online

Nuff said.

RE: Glad you're back online
CADJedi @ 1/8/2009 12:16:56 PM # Q

OK, what about us "Palm Loyal" customers who have been with the platform for 10+ years?

Will old Palm OS apps run on the new OS?

What about the Palm Desktop?... does the new PRE work with the old Desktop or has the Desktop been overhauled too?

Can I easily migrate all my old data onto the new device?

Sometimes it's what they DON'T say that is important.

...like "we are committed to gaining your business" or "you are going to have to throw away 12 years of application licensing if you want to have this iPhone clone."?

RE: Glad you're back online

WHAT?!? no Verizon?

RE: Glad you're back online
malgeri @ 1/8/2009 12:48:33 PM # Q
I expected that if the new os was awesome my old apps wouldn't work. But I've got to have an easy way to transfer 7 years of data. If I can do that I'm sold. For those of you expecting backward compatability, I'm no expert but with a simple os like we've been using wouldn't it be difficult to add all the features we've been asking for and have the old apps work? Maybe an emulator of some sort but I don't know I'd want to take the performance hit.

bhartman34 @ 1/8/2009 10:46:32 AM # Q
It's some kinda Nova, but it's not even close to what we've been expecting from Palm. The Vista desktop is a dead giveaway...

It might be cool to log on to your desktop from a PDA-style device, but I don't see it as being all that useful. They're very different platforms, and I think navigating a desktop on a PDA would be like trying to thread a needle wearing boxing gloves.

And methodology best left to Msft. Let all those folks walking around with computers in their pockets play with that sort of nonsense. You know, the folks with the "organizers" that have a hard time with alarms and such...

As long as this OS can handle Garnet applications, it's a winner. If it's a brand new OS that will rely on all new third-party applications, not so sure.

The whole point that people have supported and stuck with Palm so fervently over the years is 1) ease of use and 2) third-party application expandability. Other companies can leapfrog whatever interesting features this has pretty quickly, but nobody's been able to accommodate classic Palm OS applications very well. StyleTap on the WinceMob is about as close as they've come...

How BIG of a learning curve? As long as I can run my legacy Garnet applications then I'm open to the rest. If I can't, then this device does not seem to matter.

Palm webOS? PRE?

RE: Palm webOS? PRE?
zadillo @ 1/8/2009 11:20:33 AM # Q
How do you pronounce that with the accent above the E? I seem to recall that Treo is actually pronounced like Tray-o. Would that mean this is pronounced like "pray"? Surely you wouldn't name a product the "pray" or "prey"?

RE: Palm webOS? PRE?
freakout @ 1/8/2009 11:22:09 AM # Q
Hahaha. good question! knowing Palm...

RE: Palm webOS? PRE?
Scott R @ 1/8/2009 12:29:46 PM # Q
I was wondering that as well. The Treo has the same line over the "e" and I believe that they've previously said that it was pronounced like a hard "a". So that would mean that this is pronounced "pray". Even if it was a hard "e" it would be a pretty bad name. The product itself looks great, though. Hard to believe that they couldn't have come up with a better name than "pre".

Or internationally?

Nooooooo!!!!!!!

ONe can only hope it won't be long... they did say 3G GSM was one of the reasons they needed to move to a new OS...

RE: You gotta be kidding me
LiveFaith @ 1/8/2009 11:38:53 AM # Q
Ditto boys and girls. No way that Palm has held it's destiny by the thread of only 1 carrier, most likely Sprint. This aint Apple's cash supply were talking about. Either Palm starts moving serious quantity ASAP or it's lights out.

No way they are going to forsake international markets for a long exclusive to Sprint, the 3rd largest US Carrier. My confidence is partially desperation based.
Also, ATT not getting on the Pro bandwagon would indicate they are waiting on WebOS. Or, they have a complete falling out with Palm altogether. I cannot bear the latter.

Good looking design. Shoulda went Roteo on the KB for landscape text tho. Still good.

RE: You gotta be kidding me
AdamaDBrown @ 1/8/2009 11:47:11 AM # Q
Other devices maybe, but typically there's an exclusivity period on anything new that comes out. Figure 6 months on Sprint before it's available from anybody else.

Personally, it's not the way I'd have gone-I'd have tried to contract with AT&T so that I would have a GSM version for launch in other countries too, but AT&T might not have wanted to play. Either because they want to minimize iPhone competition or because they're trying to cut down on their supported platforms.

RE: You gotta be kidding me
NuShrike @ 1/8/2009 12:02:40 PM # Q
Palm just stabbed themselves in the gonads. Palm became successful because its destiny wasn't tied to anybody but the customers. Now they're a carrier bitch, a sinking regional one at that - they've got a boat anchor around their neck.

HVGA sucks too.

Poor execution Palm! Maybe Sprint can give you a leg up, but it's only a very short-term solution.

HVGA is yesterday's news literally. No only has Sony PalmOS Clies had it years ago, but so does the T|X, the iPhone, G1. The real future is WVGA and Palm is still the lagging horse.

RE: QUESTIONS FOR PALM on the PRE
joad @ 1/8/2009 12:23:05 PM # Q
Yeah - if it breaks Garnet compatibility, we're totally screwed. After Palm has scared away so many developers the past few years there's little hope of getting a lot of the obscure but useful apps tweaked for a new OS.

And they'll get to the pricing games during the end of the cellular talk I'm sure. It's probably some ridiculous MSRP like $600-700 "but heavily discounted with a cell contract" like usual. Here's the guy that will talk you through the pricing: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/9/35b/450

joad @ 1/8/2009 12:17:22 PM # Q
Looks like an iPhone clone with a (usable) Treo keyboard grafted on. Hope there's more. Hope, hope hope. Pretty for sure.

uh-ohs:

-No stylus ?!? (good luck with 12 years of legacy programs). Note to self: invest in capacitive stylus supplier.

-Emulator, yes?

-I *gotta* sync via the 'cloud' now?

-Has Palm learned their lesson about providing an adequate battery YET?

-Graffiti one now available?

-HOW GOOD IS THE BUILD QUALITY? IS THIS THING GOING TO LAST MUCH MORE THAN A FEW WEEKS UNLIKE THE TUNGSTEN SLIDER MODELS THAT SPONTANEOUSLY FELL APART?

Noble effort, Palm. Here's hoping against hope that for the first time in your history you aren't shining your "power users" on.

RE: Hey - it's the Zodiac 3!!!
DarthRepublican @ 1/8/2009 12:54:03 PM # Q
Actually I think it resembles the HTC Touch 3G more closely with a usable keyboard grafted on:

http://www.htc.com/www/product/touch3g/overview.html

I the UI is designed to be manipulated with your fingers, the device doesn't really need a stylus. A stylus would allow for more precise control however, I guess you can forget about a mobile version of Photoshop. Also, I didn't see anything about backwards compatibility.

My T-Mobile G1 syncs "via the cloud" with GMail and other Google apps and it works quite well.

If there is one lesson that I've learned from here and from my experience moving from a Treo to the G1, it's that no device has truly adequate battery life for some people. The only thing to do is to make sure the battery is removable and carry a spare.

I doubt if Graffiti 1 will ever be available from Palm. Even though Xerox finally lost its patent suit against Palm, it was a long and costly process (beginning in 1997) and after it all Xerox was still grumbling about appealing the decision as late as 2005.

Backwards Compatibility?

DarthRepublican @ 1/8/2009 12:19:50 PM # Q
Maybe I just rushed through the pictures and comments too fast but I didn't see anything about backwards compatibility with older PalmOS applications. Sure the presentation looked great but my T-Mobile G1 is pretty good too and I'm using it now. What incentive does Palm webOS offer me to switch back? Google synchronization would make it easy, does Palm webOS do Google synchronization? Google is mentioned as a partner so there is some hope. For that matter, the development model looks pretty similar to Android's, is there hope for compatibility or easy portability for Android applications? I still have all my contacts, data, and notes in my Palm TX, is there a way to import them into the "Palm Pre"? Ugh, what a name.

Not good enough. Switching to a new platform is a pain in the ass. This is a new platform. Users have a right to know how much KY Jelly it will require....

Styletap to the rescue! If Palm is dropping that you can have Palm apps run emulated on a Palm!

What about my LEGACY DATA?!!? How would I get this into a Pre?

No LEGACY APP support? Garnet is now DEAD?

No syncing to the desktop AT ALL? - except MAYBE via CLOUD?

WTF is with that new Memo app?! Can it hold the ginormous Memos my LifeDrive Memos can?

NO stylus?

NO G1?

I need to see some videos. I still need convincing.

This could be a comeback for Palm, but right now I'm not sure it's for me.

your legacy data will be purged upon first sync!

you need a fresh start!!!

No external storage - micro/mini-SD card slot?

Maybe there's one under the removable battery...

Still, 8GB is decent enough to start with.

Keyboard for landscape mode of operation?

Does it have two keyboards?

I can live with that. Beats the iPhone's idiocy of permanent weak battery and NO exchangeable flash card.

From the developer site:
And good news for Palm OS developers! There are a number of ways to migrate data from a an existing PDB file to your new WebOS app

Remains to be seen if local sync is supported or not.

Hey Admin: Why do we have to keep two profiles?

RE: Unaswered
palmato @ 1/8/2009 12:53:32 PM # Q
Also.

Applications will be developed using html5 which supports local storage access, unlike previous versions of html/javascript. Moreover applications will be able to use local features of the device (pim, location, media, etc) by accessing local web services. Basically that was the missing link in the first iPhone which only allowed webapps. It actually was never solved because native development was later introduced.

This is an interesting approach, provided that security for this services is tight: you don't want your phonebook to end up in a spam shop...

This looks great.

The phone is kinda ugly though. Hope they make some better lookin ones, maybe even on Verizon or ATT.

My only concern is: will this ever exist? Memories of Cobalt and Foooleo still linger...

(Dont fooleo us again, palm!)

1. Right ingredients, wrong carrier. I'm on Verizon and it stinks to think that it could be a year before they carry it, if they carry it at all. But, WiFi, GPS and all that other stuff will be great if Verizon picks it up and doesn't disable them. Maybe Palm will offer a phone-free version. That isn't consistent with their current position that they will offer no new handhelds, but they could take a page from the Apple iPod Touch play book.

2. Did they talk about compatibility with current Palm applications? I missed it in the live blog. I can't imagine that the webOS will not be backward compatible.

3. I am looking forward to more pictures and hopefully some hands-on reviews.

Did they say no new handhelds? or no new PDAs? If the latter, the could release the "EDA" like the one that that Israeli firm announced this week.

Missing stuff, and couple comments

ReadOnly @ 1/8/2009 2:36:12 PM # Q
- Old apps - Limitations or complete incompatibility?

- Is the trackball also a push-button?

- How about a shot of the BOTTOM of the device? Palm.com gallery has top, but no bottom?

- Is keyboard backlit? If so, how do you toggle it??

- How about BUILT-IN voice dialing, voice launching, and voice control of media players?

- How about voice control via BlueTooth???

And the big one for me:

- I imagine the Pre won't be cheap, so I surely don't want this slick device to pop out of my hand in the first week I own it!
There is NO rubbery texture - heck, there is no texture at ALL on this thing!
How am I suppose to open/close this thing one handed while on the go, without seriously risking fatally dropping it?
With the slide-out keyboard, I don't expect to see a case I would want anytime soon.

Palm - Please provide a lanyard mount on the back top corner of this thing!

----------

Other than that, it looks pretty fabulous.

I suspect old apps will be incompatible:
- imagine trying to support the 5-way's binary switches via a trackball interface?
- even the menu button is gone from keyboard

I am sort of glad to see they added semi-colon, underscore, and especially the equal sign to the keyboard.

I do hope that VZW quickly regrets not signing up for the launch.

Hmm - wonder when VZW is ever going to open their system up to user owned phones like they claimed they were the other year??? Hate the idea of having to buy it unlocked at full price, but sure beats the Sprint service around here.

Ryan and I are heading to meet with Palm for hands-on time

hkklife @ 1/8/2009 3:09:16 PM # Q
We will post some initial impressions shortly, then will regroup and post video from earlier and our detailed impressions and hands-on report. Fear not, I will give it an OH SO THOROUGH fondling!!

We're on the threshold of potentially the best damn mobile platform on the planet, but it's very, very much a clean break from nearly everything the Palm OS epitomized in the past 12 years. I can deal with the learning curve and I can deal with the lack of backwards compatibility. But no removable storage, no Verizon and possibly no dekstop Hotsync capability leaves me out in the cold.

Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->Zodiac 2->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon Treo 755p->?

MikeCon - i think it's a very safe assumption that it can do youtube.

Assume NOTHING. WTF has happened to you, Gekko, giving Palm the benefit of the doubt?

Mossberg thought the FOLEO could do YouTube.

I want to see a frikkin VIDEO of a Pre running YOUTUBE before I believe.

RE: Ryan and I are heading to meet with Palm for hands-on time
Gekko @ 1/8/2009 5:41:29 PM # Q

if FrankenGarnet can do youtube.....

my guess is that Pre will be able to do flash/youtube, but Kinoma hasn't finished the app yet (or whichever 3rd party is doing the app)

On Treo 755p:
Kinoma can play some YouTube videos without stutter too much.
CorePlayer 1.2.4 can, in my experience, play them much better.
