Comments on: webOS 1.0.4 Update Released

webos update prePalm has released another update for the Palm Pre. This latest webOS build comes only 10 days following the previous release. Pre users can manually check for the new version via the built in update app.

The update weighs in at 12 MB. Palm's support document states this release contains several security updates. Forum users at Palm.com are reporting that the update patches the recent homebrew application install method, whereby users were able to side-load unofficial third party apps via an email link.

Cat and Mouse

I can see the "hack and patch" game has already started. So when someone is going to hack the OS so it refuses compulsory patches?

This is the final patch to WebOS. It cannot crash, be security compromised, and is ready for any future peripheral upgrades. Oh, and while were at it, GM, Citibank, and Bear$tearns are gonna rebound really strong, become very successful and pay all their loans / infusions back. :-)

Doesn't seem like much of a game since Palm and the person who posted about the security hole are communicating on it.

Darned if you do; darned if you don't.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

Someone around here recently sneered about the Old Palm's record with kicking out updates/fixes.

Still sneering now?

If this closes the current holes, the next series of updates should bring new functions, and maybe even upgrade the Calendar at very least.

The New Palm is worth paying attention to.

you are so naive. your childlike optimism is humorous.

it's going to take a lot more than a shitty little software update to fix this pig.

there's no patch that can cure shitty materials, shitty build quality, shitty ergonomics, shitty hardware, shitty software, and shitty applications.

mike,

two minor updates in a month is nothing to crow about.

it's a good start, however let's see if in two years palm is still releasing firmware updates and new features for this model.

Two minor updates in a month doesn't undo a history of poor support, however it's a good start.

MikeCon is easily impressed. serve him shit 1.0 then come back with shit with corn kernels and call it 1.0.1 and he thinks you've made progress.

be skeptical and don't believe the hype.

I like the way you think Gekko!

>there's no patch that can cure shitty materials, shitty build quality, shitty
>ergonomics, and shitty hardware

However, with enough s/w updates, even:

>shitty software, and shitty applications

can be fixed!

Gekko- you crack me up real good. I thought I was the only one not hugging Palm's Touchstones. You have any plan about jumping to the Pre soon? I just upgraded to the Centro and am happy.

Gekko, pre-Pre:

"Never buy the first generation of anything. Give them time to work out the bugs."

does this scare anybody else???

Sounds like you should have followed your own advice! :P

Gekko,

Read Palm's release notes - the sharp edge on the keyboard is the Pre's integrated cheese slicer!!!

Now you want browse the web, email friends, IM people, manage your contacts and slice cheese - all at the same time!

Amazing!!!

What a bunch of "girlie-hands" these wimps must have. Do a little real work and you'll have enough calluses you won't have such a painful experience touching that terribly sharp edge. ;-)

See, Gekko, it's this kind of love that's been missing here at PIC! I hope you're back for good now.

Come on, you recall all the crap with the Tungstens and their sliders. And the screws that fell out too.

I still haven't been able to molest a non-Demo-locked-down Pre.

but i don't know if i like this "kindler, gentler" MikeCon. you're mellowing in your old age.

mellow and too gullible.

Mike?!!! Mellow with age?!!! No freakin' way. My only explanation is he's drunk.

Or, I was posting too damned late in the evening prior to bedtime.

I save my ire for the bastards of book publishing these days.

This isn't about homebrewed apps, necessarily...

bhartman34 @ 6/29/2009 5:09:02 PM # Q
I can understand people being upset that a method of installing home-brewed apps has been closed. But realistically speaking, this update is a no-brainer. Installing via an e-mail link just seems like a virus or worm waiting to happen. Installing via one's hard drive is one thing. Installing via an e-mail link is quite another.

My battery's a little run-down at the moment. It'll be interesting to see if the Tip Calculator still works when the update happens. :)
