Palm Pre Europe GSM o2 Movistar Unsubstantiated rumors are spreading that the Palm Pre will see a release date of October 30th on the O2 network in the UK. Until now the company has only acknowledged that the smartphone will be available "in time for the holidays." O2/Movistar is also slated to offer the Pre in Ireland, Germany and Spain.

^^ Fingers crossed it won't have to be and we can all just dump our SIM cards straight in. I'm living in fear of the unlocked price though...

At least it's a choice. GSM users have none at the moment.

support frequencies?

HandyMan @ 8/11/2009 2:02:25 PM # Q
I assume 2100 UTMS and quad band GSM is in the bag, but what about North American 3G frequencies?

Page says that O2 uses 900mhz, 1800mhz and 2100mhz bands. AT&T uses 850/1900mhz so you may be screwed.

Although - the 680 & Centro were quad-band and supported 850/900/1800/1900mhz so you were pretty much covered wherever.

Could it then be a 5 band data radio? That's what it sounds like coering O2 and ATT would require. Why would they make different physical radios for GSM markets? Treos were neer that way and it made it simpler it would seem.

OT: Gartner just updated the Hype Cycle

Gekko @ 8/11/2009 3:34:29 PM # Q

Gartner just updated the Hype Cycle for 2009. It predicts a big backlash coming for e-Book readers, microblogging and cloud computing.

Thank god. I'm so sick of the word "Twitter". I instantly hated it, and my hatred was only floored by it's adoption by Shaq, CNN, and Oprah.

Gartner bases it on Hype. While I give the frikkin *reasons*:

So, Gekko, did you see SHARK TANK on ABC? If not, go to ABC and stream it.

O2 has the worst 3G coverage in UK

grahamnind @ 8/11/2009 11:25:49 PM # Q
I was considering getting a Pre but 3G coverage on O2 is terrible where I live. It canes the battery coz it's constantly trying to get a fix. Also there is no edge coverage either so I would be stuck with GPRS. It's not as if I am out in the sticks. I live in London which is supposed to be covered according to the O2 map.

Turns out it's not just me. The recent Ofcom report said that O2 had the worst 3G coverage in UK. Not good for a cloud device.

Why do Palm have to do these deals with one carrier? They have just lost my money.
