Comments on: webOS 1.3.1 Out And About

Judging from the way my "webOS" Twitter search has just exploded in a rapturous orgy of adulation and delight, I can assume only one thing: webOS 1.3.1 is now out and about for your Sprint-only Sprint & Bell downloading pleasure.

Checking "Updates" on my own GSM Pre is yielding no love as of yet, but it's only a matter of time. A public service announcement for all homebrewers: remember to remove all your homebrew patches before updating - a task best accomplished, in your correspondent's humble opinion, by using the Emergency Patch Recovery service available via Preware. Update: Full changelog is now after the break...

Woo Hoo!

I checked the updates app and it showed the update. I uninstalled my theme and patches and rebooted. The update is downloading right now!

I'm now running webOS 1.3.1. My Pre feels a little faster but part of this could just be that it slowed down with 1.2, so it's nothing spectacular. Plus I now have to install a new theme and reinstall all my patches -- assuming some of them haven't been broken by the update. Yay?

What's going on, Darth? Is that excitement I see? Over webOS? On PIC?? Positivity?? No way! I don't believe it.

Perhaps you posted here instead of PreCentral by accident? ;)

As for the patches situation - I've seen rod and some of the other Internals folks talking about implementing some kind of system where Preware can automatically re-apply your patches after an update. Hopefully it'll be added in soon.

Preware Feature Request

Ryan @ 11/14/2009 8:15:24 AM # Q
A remove all patches and themes macro for OS updates. I love the themes and enhanced functionality the patches provide, but what a pain to go through the de-intsall prep loop each time.

And Palm, still no LED notifications by default? This feature is amazingly useful, not sure why they are still hiding it.

I'd like a standalone theme manager myself. As far as patches go, there is always the Emergency Patch Recovery app. It installs, uninstalls your patches, and uninstalls itself.

Palm Pre GSM in OZ

patkack @ 11/15/2009 6:06:22 PM # Q
Tim, I'm guessing by this article that your Palm Pre is working on the Oz network. Which carrier are you using and how much dev did it take to get it going? Is it possible for non-programmers or still too tricky?

Every Oz carrier works straight out-of-the-box, no hacking required. I'm on Optus myself, but I've tested all three of the other networks - Vodafone, 3, and Telstra. All support MMS + data.

Telstra is the only one that has a problem. The Pre only supports UMTS/HSPA freqs 1900/2100, and Telstra's NextG network is on the 850 band. Thus, you'll only get GPRS/EDGE network speeds on Telstra - a crying shame, given how fast their network is...

You'll get 3G on all the others though.

Been meaning to include this info in a kinda-sorta "Pre Importer's Guide", but have yet to find the time. ;)

That's great news! I'm on Vodafone using a Samsung F700 from the UK which also worked straight up. Hate the OS tho and have been waiting for the Palm Pre to make its way here. Did you get the UK or German Pre? One of them is unlocked right?

An importers guide would be great, maybe you could even get Palm to pay for your efforts!

Thanks,
pat
