Back in June, both Palm Inc. and Silicon Wave demonstrated Bluetooth wireless connectivity for Palm PDAs. "A variety of players are looking at adding wireless connectivity to their products and are realizing that Bluetooth technology's promise of a low-power and low-cost solution is ideal," said ABI Director of Residential & Networking Technologies and author of the report, Navin Sabharwal. However, Mr. Sabharwal cautions that the phase in of Bluetooth will be gradual. "We are unlikely to see a significant volume of Bluetooth-enabled devices until mid-2001, and the market will only begin to accelerate in 2002," says Sabharwal. "Lack of inexpensive silicon, interoperability problems and limited applications could serve to dampen the market in the early phase, but as these issues are addressed, Bluetooth adoption by equipment vendors and actual use by consumers should be robust."

RE: security?
What a timely question. Here's a Wired article talking about a security flaw in Bluetooth:
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,38688,00.html Markus Jacobson and Susanne Wetzel, researchers at Lucent's Bell Laboratories, recently realized that a Bluetooth device could be bugged so that its encryption key could be easily obtained by an intruder. It is also possible to obtain the identity of the device and trace the user's location.
I can't wait for Bluetooth enabled mobiles and portable music players (cd's, md's etc). No more trailing wires from your ears!!
