Quickies: Docs to Go, FTC vs. MS, OmniSky, Symbol@Sears

DataViz has released a free upgrade to Documents To Go. New features include new document creation on the handheld, support for the jog dial feature on the Sony Clie and improved speed when using a portable keyboard. This is a free download for all Documents To Go 3.0 Professional Edition customers.

Microsoft has reached a proposed agreement with Federal Trade Commission lawyers to increase the print size of a disclosure in ads for its handhelds. The FTC said they didn't make it clear that users of Pocket PC devices would need to purchase a separate modem to access the Internet. The FTC charged Microsoft with deceptive advertising last week.

Yesterday, OmniSky reported operating results for its fourth quarter and 2000 fiscal year. Their fourth quarter revenue was at the high end of the previously announced range and they expect to be profitable earlier than expected. Their subscriber base grew to 34 thousand.

Symbol Technologies has announced a deal that will put its wireless devices inside 860 Sears department stores. Nearly 15 thousand of Symbol's SPT 1740 Palm OS-based handhelds and 25 thousand of its Spectrum24 wireless LAN cards will help Sears employees perform in-store, browser-based applications such as inventory, price change, merchandise pickup, receiving and replenishment. They will also be wirelessly tied into Sears networked printers. Symbol 's devices are interoperable with Sears existing IEEE 802.11-compatible, wireless local area network. Symbol's Retail Systems Group will also work with Sears' IT groups to develop HTML and Java applications.
