CompactFlash MemPlug Debuts

Portable Innovation Technology has just announced that the Compact Flash version of the MemPlug adaptor is available. This is a Springboard that provides up to 256 MB storage using a Type I Compact Flash memory card. It includes five self-installing applications and registered gMovie Maker software. It will be available in stores and online in July for $50.

The company also makes the MemPlug SmartMedia Adaptor. Both come with seven self-installing applications and a registered copy of gMovie Maker that collectively let users view documents, images and video, and backup and manage files on their Visors. MemPlug CF and MemPlug SM work with the Handspring Springboard expansion slot so that the module applications automatically self-install once inserted. MemPlug CF has two-to-three times faster write speed than MemPlug SM.

It's built-in apps are:

  • PiPrefs -- does quick or full formatting for the SmartMedia card and manages other preferences.
  • PiMover -- handles file management for the SmartMedia card and can create up to 25 levels of sub-directories to manage files on the SmartMedia card.
  • PiBackup -- does the backup and restoration of applications and data to and from the SmartMedia card.
  • PiViewer -- allows direct decoding and viewing of JPEG images from SmartMedia cards in 16-bit color or 16 gray-scale display.
  • gMovie Player -- allows the playback of 16-bit color video, animation or still images stored on the SmartMedia card.
  • gMovie Maker -- enables the creation of video, animation or still images
The built-in applications and software drivers are Flash updateable. "PIT has ensured that the latest features of any bundled software are easily available to MemPlug owners," said Patrick Lin, director, Portable Innovation Technology.

The company has also released a beta version of PiDirect, which allows read-only Palm applications and databases to be run directly from the card.

"up to 256 MB" ???

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/25/2001 12:59:33 PM #
Pretec (a CF vendor) has just announced a 640MB solid-state CF module. So is the "256 MB" a limit of the adapter or the OS, or is this just what they thought was the max available in CF cards?

RE: Type?

Looked at Pretec's site and it didn't say whether this was a Type I or Type II card. If it is a Type II, the MemPlug can't use it.

RE: Limits
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/25/2001 1:08:12 PM #
The limits are divided in two categorys. Hardware and Software.
Hardware:
CF-card must be CF type I
Card must not use more power than Visor can supply

Software:
The driver-software supplied with the module must handle the size of the card.

As long as the CF is Type I (or, if you cut out the platsics on the back of the module, you could fit a type II card in it, but beware) and the CF not uses more power than available, there is no real limit other than that in the software, and, even if there is one now, it could be fixed in the future.
The OS has nothing to do with it.

Lexar CF cards will not work. Here is a list of compatible cards.
