Parlay Dialer Speeds Phone Use

Synchroscan, a provider of wireless peripherals for handheld computers, announced today the Parlay Dialer, a wireless automatic phone dialer. It connects to the phone line and sits beside the phone. A contact is selected from a user's address book and beamed to the dialer. When the phone is picked up, the number is dialed automatically. The Parlay Dialer works with all handhelds that have an infrared port and hooks to standard, analog phone lines. It should be available in early September. A price isn't yet available.

It doesn't need any software of its own. It uses the ability of the built-in Address Book to beam addresses to other handhelds by infrared. It dials the phone number that has been selected as the default one to display in the main list.

"The initial reaction from beta sites and retail customers has been very strong," explained Doug Limbach, President of Synchroscan. "This is a further indication of the acceptance we envision for this accessory this holiday season."

Synchroscan's technology is based on Extended Systems' IrDA-sanctioned infrared wireless connectivity software and is a patent pending design by Hill Sales Company.

This Sounds Interesting

As long as the device is small, out of the way, and costs $19.99 or less, this could be useful.

Of course, it will probably be a bulky box that needs to be precisely aimed, and will probably cost $100+

I just went to the website, and it looks about the size of a caller ID box. No price is available on the website

YES!! Now I will be able to leave work at 4:59pm everyday instead of 5:00 because of the time I saved dialing!! Maybe I can even squeeze that extra phone call a month in and make an extra $5/month!! I'm so excited!!

How lazy are we going to get!!!

How about having it integrated in a reagular phone so we do not have to add an adapter.

I like the idea, it saves one step, I always end up looking for the phone in my pda anyway!!!

Where do they come up with these things.

Or you could just buy a HandEra 330 or TRGpro and let it do the dialing (on any phone) for you.

I suppose a few people might find this useful, but lets think about this gadget. The phone you most likely have this connected to either has a speed dialer on it that you've already programmed, a computer next to it with a modem that could dial for you, or you've got a sheet of paper there with the numbers on it. The place where you'd most likely want this thing to be, out of the office, is the least likely place you'd find one. I don't even want to guess what stupid thing related to this they're trying to get a patent for.

I should have made this more clear in the article. I'm updating it now.

Real Ideas...

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/28/2001 12:37:42 PM #
What is this??? JUNK... if you want something useful here's some ideas....

A phone that I can beam the address book to and dial from the phone from now on using a jog dial type Caller ID display....

A car radio head unit (like the video units) with a touch screen that runs the palm os. This way in the car I car retrive address book data, calendar, etc. If they use a standard conector I could even use the gps for palms.

A large palm os unit (640 x 640 with double the pix that sony has now but done the same way) that people can use as a home base for address book, calendar, etc. so their kids (my 6 yrs old can use a palm) and family can sync apointments or know where to contact you at. Add home automation control and you have a real seller.

A bar code reader converted from the Cue Cat scanner from radio shack.

Just a few thing they could have spent there money on and had a better chance at getting a return on their money
