New Visor

jonecool @ 2/14/2002 9:34:07 AM #
I hope that Handspring more than considers releasing it and actually does it. They will need a color device, visible outdoors with 16MB in a smaller form factor to improve their market position. Not everyone wants a small communicator that is non-expandable. Expansion is the main reason many people bought a Visor.

If they release this product, I'll likely buy it as soon as I try it out at the local computer store. I use a Prism now and am considering a 16MB upgrade for it. But I'm still stuck with the lousy screen that I can't see outdoors.

I'll hold out. Plus, I have so many springboard modules it doesn't make sense for me to jump the VisorShip anytime soon... I'd miss my VisorPhone and won't go back to a non-PalmOS phone.

Go Handspring! Release this baby soon!!!!!

Why do I doubt that Handspring is working on a Palm OS 4.x anything.

Also, how is Handspring both "about to launch" this but also "not launch this new model until they can evaluate the sales of the new Treo".

Handspring's new market are smartphones (Treo). If Treo is not succes, then they will launch color Visor Edge.

On the other hand, if Treo has good sales, then -maybe yes or maybe not- they launch it.

For Handspring to be "about to launch" this, in my opinion, they would have to have had manufacturing done and built up some level of stock of the new product. It will take at least a few months to see how Treo is doing, and a few more to get this "new Visor" through the first steps I described above before I would say it is "about to launch".

I'm sure Handspring has one or more prototypes of a new color Visor out there, but that doesn't make them "about to launch" anything. If all you are saying is that Handspring has a prototype of a possible new Visor and that they're thinking about releasing it, I'll tell you that is no news at all. Every company out there has prototypes of cool new devices that never make it to market.

This is exactly what I'm waiting for. 16mB of RAM is now necessary for medical reference applications.

I want color! I bought one of the first Visor Edges'. I prefered the size because I travel extensively. But I have always wanted color and the size was tool large. I am longingly looking at the new Clie (even with all its problems), but come on, this would be my 4th PDA and although the PDA's are nice, it always makes me feel ripped-off to have to re-buy all the cords, styli, cases, hot syncers, et'al. Why not release a color Edge that is compatable with all the peripherals. Offer old Edge users a trade-in (Visor has used this ploy in the past). This would also help to make Handspring sound more credible when they say they aren't going to totaly abandon the handheld market

TFT does not make much sense without HiRes

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/14/2002 10:21:21 AM #
yeah... TFT.. it provides better brightness

But it's sad that they moved only half a step since they're not putting HiRes on it.

agreed, how can a color edge compete with the T615?

Hi,

Our source tell us that the screen is very impresed, much better than m505 or Clie.

Also I think that maybe this new model has HiRe screen.

I hope have photos very soon.

Looks like Handspring is aiming some new colour screen technology. This makes sense because the battery in the colour Treo won't survive unless they figure out a less power hungry screen. If Handspring has that "new display" already in house, it would be natural that they apply the same to any new colour Visor.

Handspring should be well aware even a conventional Hires screen won't be able to beat T615. If they decide to launch something, they must have figured out a winning formula.

I also agree that Hi-Res is the way to go. I'm a happy m505 owner, but I'm pretty sure that I'd be HAPPIER if my Palm was 320x320.

Since I've been a low-res user since Palm Personal, I didn't realize how much better hi-res was until I used my brother as a guinea pig and told him to buy the CLIÉ 610C. I was playing around with it for a few days and I liked the higher resolution it a lot.

Is there a significant drawback in battery drainage when you move to higher resolution? Or maybe any other issues that majority of people may not know about?

Personally, I'm glad that many of the apps I frequently use support hi-res, such as DocsToGo and DateBk4. That way, when I eventually move to hi-res, the experience will be even more enhanced. Maybe more companies should think about doing the same so that it will drive Palm OS licensed PDA companies forward and think about just forgoing 160x160 altogether. In any case, my personal wish is for thinkingbytes to release a hi-res version of thinkDB when I finally do make that move. :)

Well, if this rumor turns out to be true, this is great news from Handspring. And Palm should take note, as well as others. Is there anyone out there that personally likes low-res over hi-res? If so, I'm very curious as to why you feel this way.

My 610C is much less power hungry than my Prism was.

Guess what? My souce tells me that not only the newer newly new Visor has TFT reflective screen, but also it has an improvement of the basic Palm model:

- ultra laser beamer (can beam 15 people to death in sight)
- sonic boom (turn the speaker volumn to loud and *BOOM*)
- flash bomb (have your played CS before?)

In addition, it can also be used as a toilet paper in case you went out of it.

Just my $5,000

The article is wrong, the new model will have a 16 gig hardrive, not 16 meg, and if you buy direct from Handspring, they'll include a magic "SpringBoard Power Crystal" to ward off evil demons and also communicate with the dead.

My source(my dog Rocky) also said that the model will be powered by a Hydrogen Fuel cell...

Handspring's rate of innovation is truely unsurpassed!

finally, handspring has finally hit the jackpot with the power crystal springboard. i just can't wait until it comes out.

i only have a busted palm. i guess i'll just wait for the visor edge prism and then get the springboard.

any idea when they'll come out with a MS or SD power crystal module?

btw, you won't believe what came out of my dog's butt when i was walking it today. it was an inside letter for handspring execs stating they'll be considering a merger with sony, palm, handera, and handmedia!

btw, i was being sarcastic!
