palmOne Holds European PDA Retail Lead

A new consumer retail analyst report from Europe says that palmOne help its overall lead in PDA sales though the European consumer retail channel in September.

Thanks largely to its success in France, palmOne took the number one position in the PDA retail market in September 2004 in the Top 5 European countries, according to the latest report from Context's SalesWatch, which tracks sales of business and consumer technology products through indirect channels of distribution in Europe.

Although palmOne's consumer market share dipped in July, the company regained some strength in August and September, increasing to 42% against rival HP's 36% market share in September. While its entire portfolio of products sold well, the Zire 31 helped secure it a higher market share than HP also in the German consumer market.

In the Spanish retailer channel, HP led with a share of 34%, but in second place palmOne was challenged by Acer, who with its n30 range, managed to outsell palmOne in September and had the best selling product overall in the Spanish retailer channel. Acer was also number two in the total overall Spanish market with 22% of the market share against palmOne's 18%.

In the business channels however, HP was a clear European number one in September, as it has been since July 2003. In France, palmOne gained considerable amounts of share in both August and July and led the business channel with 54 % of the market against HP's 40% in September. In Germany palmOne also had a good run in the business channel and led with three percentage points in September. Its Tungsten E and Zire 31 proved popular, while HP's 2210 and 4150 ranges secured the vendor a strong leadership in the business channels in UK, Spain and the Netherlands.

Looks like palmOne has been a pressure player in the European Market of sorts....

I think palmOne has different strategies coast to coast, nation to nation....so on......

Good thing palmOne's putting up a lot of pressure on the European PDA Market....

I pledge to the Palm-Powered community that I will seek to make a better handheld through research one day!!!

So it seems one CAN actually recover from a dip in market share. Seems it's not all over for P1 after all .

Not a surprise....

Not quite. HP is still lead by a wide margin in business channels, and their share of the market continues to expand. Keep in mind this market study only targets RETAIL.

Yes, HP still leads in the business channel overall in EMEA. But a unit sold in the retail channel counts just as the same in the business channel.

PalmOne could do _a_lot_ better in some European countries. For years now PPC has totally dominated the retail market for car navigation (pda + gps + software package deals) .. for _many_ Europeans the killer application that made them buy their first PDA. Only recently did I see the first Palm based packages show up. Another example: Walk into a cell-phone shop and ask for a Palm Treo. One thing is that they're unlikely to have one, another is that often they haven't even heard about it (and I don't mean the 650 but the entire range) ..

Go Palm .. but faster, please :)

palmOne is fairly late about GPS, but the major software maker (TOMTOM) supports palm, now. But most of GPS-packs are OEM : branding is not enough ... ;)

Smartphone : Nokia is very strong in Europe, against both palm and HP.

I have to ask...

are you the same person who used to have a signature that said something like "a palm is the bread and butter of ..."

If so, then I must congratulate you. Somehow you have managed to win the "annoying signature" of the year for two years in a row. This has NEVER been accomplished before.

By the way... this is totally tongue in cheeck. Your signature is NOWHERE near as annoying as that of those 11 year olds who list all the hardware on their PC, the wheels on their car and add a line from a Britney Spears tune :-P

I read that signature as a sarcastic commentary on the seeming inability of electronics vendors to do consumer research. Every single person who has reviewed the Tungsten T5 has said "What? No vibrating alarm? No flashing indicator? Is this the twilight zone?" Many people continue to attack Palm for it's Universal Connector...which has been seemingly abandoned once again.

It has really been a matter of demand, as varous products have been available for some time now. I did my first building to building wireless survey a couple of years ago using a Magellan GPS 500 and a Palm M505. The unit worked so well that I kept using it with my M515, TT, and currently the T3. Full screen 320x480 is sweet!

Yeah, beats me. Universal... on some devices. I actually liked the UC. Our household of eight has been through no fewer than twelve different handhelds, but there is one cradle on the desk at home, and three different keyboards which we can all share.

However, it was always a problem getting cables to connect solidly. I had two Belkin sync cables that would fall off if you looked at them! Cradles, sleds, and other accessories were not a problem though. I guess that my biggest grip with the new connector is that I lose about $500 worth of accessories if I get one. The new audio/video out has huge potentional if palmOne utilizes it properly.

Since someone else brought it up - what did that Bread and Butter sig mean anyway? And the follow up about when we "are made to choose an Arm processor we all win" or some such. What did they atually mean (I'm being serious - I just didn't get them)? Maybe the poster is foreign and the intent just doesn't translate well? :-0
