Nashville PUG - Movies On Your PDA/Smartphone Demo

Michael T. Ashby writes, Picture this - you show up for a meeting only to find out that the other party is going to be 30 minutes late. Argh! "Now what?" you think to yourself as you contemplate what you can occupy yourself for the next half hour. You're a pretty savvy Palm user, so instead of just sitting on your hands, you pull out your handheld to watch a movie.

Mike continues... That's right, you heard me - WATCH A MOVIE!

This month, fellow NPUG member Steve Weiler (NPUG# 253) of Voyager Communications (www.voyagercommunications.com) will show us how to take a DVD and fit it onto a Palm OS device. He'll take us through each step and explain in detail how to make this dream a reality.

So sit back and kick up your feet as you que up Matrix on your Palm at this month's NPUG meeting. It doesn't get any cooler than this.

This is kind of old news as far as technology is concerned, but I don't know many people who do more than download ready-made clips from the internet. A walkthrough of the process would be beneficial to a lot of folks. I'm kind curious about his DVD ripping methods, since it does seem like he's using something like Pocket-DVD Studio which optimizes the output.

Correction: does NOT seem like he's using something like Pocket-DVD Studio.

Darn typos!

You don't need to pay for these DVD ripping softwares. All you need is XMPEG and the DivX/XVid codecs installed on your PC as well VirtuaDub for later optimization.

I have VirtualDub and the other tools, but what I was trying to avoid was the extra steps. I did not mind extra work for better quality, but now that the most recent version of Pocket-DVD has comparable quality, and the encoding time is faster than realtime, I thought it was worthwhile.

VirtualDub has a learning curve, and u gotta DL all these codecs and stuff. Plus, it doesn't always turn out right and it takes time to convert the files.

Pocket DVD i hear simplifies all that. It's supposed to be faster and easier to fit stuff onto SD cards.
