Didn't they already have something similar to this?

Well, google PDA has been around for a while (originally google.com/palm, and now google.com/pda). The XHTML version (which also does proxy filtering to provide low-bandwidth pages) was unofficially released a while back when it accidently replaced the regular google page for a few hours. It looks like the change here is that they give you the option to either use the filtered version or the unfiltered version.

Oops, I was slightly wrong. The new version allows you to either search the web (through the filter) or to search WAP sites (.WML).

So when are we going to start seeing Google searches integrated into the PDA's web browser?

MultiIE already does this. Mobile Opera may do so also (the desktop version does) but I haven't gotten a chance to use it since it's only available for Windows Smartphone and Symbian.
