![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Doom, Quake, Heretic & Hexen for Palm OS UpdatedPosted By: Tim Carroll on Sunday, September 16, 2007 10:05:29 PM
Performance is unchanged from previous versions: Doom, Heretic and Hexen run smooth as silk, but the fully-3D Quake is a little jerky (though still very playable). The ports are extremely well-done and have full support for Bluetooth gamepads and keyboards. You can even hold multiplayer deathmatches (or play co-operatively, if you're a pansy) via Bluetooth or over the Internet with other Palm OS devices.
You'll need to own an original or shareware copy (which can be downloaded from id's website) of the PC versions in order to install these, and have plenty of free RAM. Installation instructions can be found at yoyofr's forum.

^^ Indeed. my dad used to run some of his PCs through house TVs... me and my brother would deathmatch for hours. Fond memories. I loved these games. RE: Nah, need a HUGE screen for Quake
The first handful of stages of Episode 1 of Doom 1 (what is found in the shareware version) is quite simply the greatest level design of any modern 2.5D/3D game anywhere. The pacing, the music, the amosphere...everything's a 10/10. I am still astonished at how amazingly UNFUN Doom 3 on PC was/is in comparison to its predecessors. I'm also probably one of the few people who was utterly disappointed in Doom 2 on the PC (I was expecting more than one new weapon in what amounted to just an expansion pack) when it was released in '94. To stay OT, I have to admit that the Zodiac port of Doom 2 was a VERY good title and probably the best use of the Zod's (and POS) hardware capabilities.

^^ Agreed on Bioshock - it is quite overrated but I was still hugely impressed by the creepy design. The opening scenes were amazing; the plane crash, the splicer-fight, the first time you power up a Plasmid... woah!
Agreed on Doom 3 as well - way to screw up a franchise, id! Sure, it was kinda scary... but Doom is about fighting hordes of monsters. Doom 3 was a totally different style of game - more survival horror than anything else. Diagreed on Doom 2 - only one new weapon was hugely disappointing, but I loved the level design and the new monsters. Especially that bastard thing that spat the flaming skulls. Man, I feared those things...

Searched for and found Doom for Ubuntu (using the package manager, lxdoom et al, see http://www.soslug.org/doom). Wow - it works. I can see oodles of wasted time coming up. a-GAIN! Lol! RE: I couldn't resistSeldomVisitor @ 9/21/2007 2:23:48 PM #
Hmmm...can't get music to play at all - sound otherwise is fine.
Right now while trying to track it down, though, am listening to some German radio/web broadcast using Rhythmbox - electronic beat music - hopping in my chair...lol! Almost good enough for Doom!

"Rumble support"...hmm...never tried any of these using my bro-in-law's gift - some type of chair with built-in speakers et al - we're talking major rumble effects possible...
