New Site

WOW is all I can say. What an eye pleasing job, really! I mean it even makes the eyes truly feel good to look at your new site. Color is everything and the color selection is great.

WELL DONE.

Looks good Ryan!

Nice work on the redesign. Much the same, but cleaner. I like how the ads are moved out of the way, yet they are still noticeable. Will have to play with the rest of the look and feel after I get some sleep, but things so far load much faster and readability is much better. Great job.

Crashes IE6

Gekko @ 11/13/2006 7:18:51 PM # Q

I had to use Firefox to post this. Nice new look though. Thanks.

Ryan @ 11/13/2006 7:25:59 PM # Q
Thanks for the comments so far guys.

Gekko - I am using ie6 to post this now and it's working for me. Not sure why it would crash for you. Try deleting your cache files and trying again. Let me know if it still gives you problems.

DevPOV @ 11/13/2006 7:41:06 PM # Q
IE 7 has a bit of weirdness in panel placement but since I only use FireFox... Who cares?

RE: Crashes IE6
Gekko @ 11/13/2006 7:50:34 PM # Q

Deleted IE Temp files, cache, history, etc. and IE still crashes (death freeze) when I click on "Comments" to read them and/or post.

Foo Fighter @ 11/13/2006 8:27:24 PM # Q
Ok, I'm experiencing the same issue as Gekko; when I click on comments link IE6 freezes up as if it's chocking on some script code.

Well, it's working on my Treo (Blazer), but it freezes/crashes IE every time I click a link. (From what I've seen, though, looks great!)

hmm, this ie crashing problem is very perplexing. Can you guys give me some more info -
what version of IE you are you using?
What OS?
Which exact links are causing the problem and what exactly happens?
Does this happen when you try to post a comment? (if so which form and page are you using)

thanks, I can't seem to replicate this myself.

RE: Crashes IE6
Admin @ 11/14/2006 1:29:23 AM # Q

ahh. I just had to install ie7 last night at the last minute and so now I can't go back and test under ie6.

Can you be specific about which page url and what action causes the crash?

I *think* the IE issue is sorted out now. If anyone still experiences a problem with IE - do let me know.

(as a side note - use firefox or if you have to at least IE7 for the best experience.)

2 Issues

Haber @ 11/13/2006 8:07:02 PM # Q
1. The "View Article" bar is compartmentalized from the article synopsis via a box and different coloring, and makes it not immediately clear which "View Article" bar belongs to which synopsis.

2. The Article and Article Comments are nearly to the edge of the left side of the screen, which is visually jarring and unpleasant.

PIC redesign is as buggy as a new Palm.

The_Voice_of_Reason @ 11/14/2006 12:12:17 AM # Q
Ryan, it's ironic that Palminfocenter's update mirrors the problems that we typically see with updates from Palm and PalmSource...

Flashy, less functional and buggy is how I would sum up the redesign. Did you hire Palm engineers to do your beta testing, Ryan?

Clicking on the "comments" button immediately and consistently crashes Internet Explorer 6. I'm surprised this wasn't obvious when (if?) you tested the redesign. I actually had to drag out my Treo 700p to post this. Is it possible for you to revert back to the old (perfectly functional) site until you work the bugs out?

Also, while eye candy (fancy schmancy graphical design) may seem nice, please let form FOLLOW function. For example, it's now difficult to determine which "Comments" button is associated with which article.

PLEASE bring the "Zen of Palm" back to Palminfocenter, Ryan. Your site is far too good to spoil with nonfunctional fluff. 40 lashes with a wet noodle to Kent Pribbernow ("Foo Fighter") for messing up PIC!

[Don't be offended by the above comments Ryan - you know I always tell it like it is. I hope you'll take this as constructive criticism]

To try and help you track down the bugs, the site crashes after clicking on any buttons to view the articles or to post comments. Using Internet Explorer 6 and Windows XP Professional on an IBM X40 laptop. Also tried it on a desktop with the same software configuration with the same results. Using a Treo 700p as a broadband modem. All other sites I log into work fine.

The site is perfectly viewable on the Treo 700p browser, but log in info was immediately lost after my previous post.

Still not woking, Ryan.
The_Voice_of_Reason @ 11/14/2006 12:47:12 AM # Q
PIC still crashes with Internet Explorer 6. And when trying to respond to the other thread with Blazer on the Treo 700p the site continually asks me to re-register. Posting in this thread the log in info is somehow retrieved. Odd.

A solution to the IE woes being reported here: dump that buggy, insecure piece of crap and get Firefox already. Sheesh!

Keep the good work. PIC is the best Palm site by far.

Mobile Browsing/Posting

Thanks.

Good job - well done

icarus @ 11/14/2006 7:44:39 AM # Q
It is great.

It looks very nice, while still keeping a strong recognition factor towards the "old" design.

The new colors look fresh, nice and professional.

The loading speed is great too.

Since reading the postings, I did some jumping around. I could however not discover any inconvenience or bugs.
(Well, I am also one of those happy Firefox (2.0) users.)

Thank you very much for this great (re-)design.

Best regards from Switzerland,

icarus

There is one thing:
When posting a comment to an article, the edit function seems to be gone.

Is there no way to edit a posted comment?

Also some formatting functionality seems to be gone as well.

Is BBCode not supported anymore? Or only in the forum but not the comment section?

My signature was done in smaller font and partially in italic (using BBCode). The font is smaller than the regular message block. But italic does not work (or is it because the previous setting was done with small 'i' rather than capital 'I'?). Also it shows the tags (eventually because not supported anymore?).

Is there a reason why the forum section and the comment section do not allow the same comment / signature formatting?

Else: A great job and a nice design.

Ryan @ 11/14/2006 3:08:45 PM # Q
thanks icarus,
there is no edit on the article comments right now, it is planned.

Basically the forum and article comments are handled differently, so BB code only works in the forum.
I also have two different signatures so you can add images, and userbars etc to the forums, but
the article comments just use text to keep things simple.

You know, I've kinda gotten used to the idea of not being able to edit posts. Of course there are any number of reasons why the poster would want to edit a post and they are mostly great reasons. However, I do like that not being able to edit posts adds a tiny bit of pressure to people to get it right the first time and to be a little more careful about what they say. If I know I can go back and delete or change a post, I might be less careful about what I posted in the first place. YMMV.

I'm still waiting for the mythical color HandEra.

Fixed width, horizontal scrolling

FlaSheridn @ 11/14/2006 11:19:02 AM # Q
The redesign seems to assume a fixed width which (in Safari and FireFox 1.5 at least) is too wide for my normal browser window, and forces horizontal scrolling. Blazer 4.3’s optimized mode manages to avoid the problem.
RE: Fixed width, horizontal scrolling
Ryan @ 11/14/2006 9:26:42 PM # Q
What resolution are you using? Does it do this on the homepage too or just the content pages?

It is a little bigger width wise, I may make some adjustments.

> What resolution are you using? Does it do this on the homepage too or just the content pages?

About eight hundred pixels wide, which works well for Slate and the old Slashdot.

> It is a little bigger width wise, I may make some adjustments.

Thanks; I learned in my Palm VII days that fixed-width web pages are a bad thing.
