Quickies: Garnet Contract, Mobile Portal, TreoTwit, Software

In this round of quickie Palm OS news updates we take a look at the 8K recently filed by Palm, which contains the contract for the recent Palm OS Garnet licensing deal, Palm has updated their mobile portal site, TreoTwit is a new freeware app that lets you post to the Twitter service from your Treo, and we look at a couple of new software apps and updates.

Palm & ACCESS Garnet OS Contract
Palm has filed an 8K with the SEC containing the actual ACCESS contract for the recent Palm OS Garnet licensing deal. The 8K document contains detailed information on some of the finer details of the deal, though there is a lot of portions which have been redacted for confidentiality purposes.

David Beers posted some interesting points from the filling:

  • Palm has a perpetual license to Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager, but they did *not* get development rights to these. They agreed to contract with ACCESS on a professional services basis as they have in the past.

  • Palm does have a pre-negotiated option to obtain and develop the Palm Desktop source code under the same kind of terms as Garnet OS itself. It will cost them $3M to exercise this option, which expires after 10 yrs.

  • Palm has perpetual rights to distribute (and I think develop) the Mac OS version of Palm Desktop, but ACCESS isn't going to give Palm any further support on this: "the Mac OS Desktop is provided "AS IS," and ASA shall have no obligation to re-deliver to Palm the Mac OS Desktop."

  • It doesn't look like Palm has the right to develop or redistribute the Garnet Development Environment. No change there.

Thanks SeldomVisitor and David Beers.

Palm Mobile Portal
Palm has updated their mobile portal web page. Launching by default in Blazer on all recent Treos and Palm handhelds, the Palm Mobile Portal now has a link to mobile version of Digg.com. The overall Palm Mobile page has been slightly redesigned and new links added to all categories. -Kris

Finger Painter Palm SoftwareFinger Painter
SimToGo, the developer best known for its incredibly realistic Palm OS space simulation games, has announced beta testing Finger Painter, a new app for kids of all ages. As its name implies, Finger Painter is a relatively simply art program that allows kids of all ages to paint with their fingers onscreen. You can even use multiple fingers to draw on the screen simultaneously. Finger Painter is in the beta testing phase right now, with version .010 being the initial release. SimToGo promises to return the world of complex handheld simulator programs after the completion of this kid-oriented program. -Kris

TreoTwit - Palm OS Twitter Application
Jose from PDAExpertos let me know they have released a new freeware app called TreoTwit. With TreoTwit you can update Twitter from your Palm OS device (Treo or PDA). TreoTwit has shourtcuts that will launch the most common Twitter pages in Blazer and it's optimized for one hand navigation.

TreoCameraTimer
TreoCameraTimer v1.0 is a new TreoTwit Palm Softwareapp that provides a automatic self timer functionality to the built-in Camera application on your Treo. After the installation, a new button becomes available in the Camera's interface. When you press the button, the timer starts to count down to finally take a picture.

KeySuite for Outlook Synchronization
Chapura's KeySuite for Outlook Synchronization has been updated to v3.5.4. KeySuite software eliminates the need to reorganize, rename and revise information in Microsoft Outlook Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes in order to meet the limitations of the built-in Palm OS Date Book, Address Book, To Do List and Memo Pad. Check out our KeySuite review for more info.

MemoCalc
MemoCalc is an expression based calculator. The expression memos are saved in the Memo Pad application. Create a category 'MemoCalc' to store all your expression memos. The program is open source and freely available.

Where are they Headed?

**Palm has a perpetual license to Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager, but they did *not* get development rights to these.**

Sounds like Palm forsees moving away from these stone age, albeit stable, apps in favor of something different?

This and the rest do not resonate as a company set on restoring the Palm OS glory via Frankengarnet II. More like a company seeking to milk out the last few drops until the next core OS takes over.

Thanks for the synopsis Dave.
