Handspring Gets FCC Approval for Two Wireless Handhelds

Handspring has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission for not one but two new wireless handhelds. Unlike the just revealed Palm i705, these can handle both data and voice.

One model, the Treo k180, has a built-in keyboard like the Blackberry pager. In fact, it is the first PalmOS device ever to not have a Graffiti area at all. The other model, the Treo g180, relies on the traditional Graffiti for text input..

Handspring Drops Price of VisorPhone to $0

Just when it looked like the price for the VisorPhone couldn't go any lower, HandSpring has found a way. The company announced today that the wireless Springboard module is now free with the purchase of any Visor.

This offer is available only from Handspring and a service plan must be activated at the same time. It still costs $50 without buying a Visor.

Palm i705 Approved by FCC

Palm has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission to make a new wireless handheld model, the Palm i705. In order to get permission, the company had to give the FCC details on the device, which are now available.

The image which was leaked a few months ago of the device turns to be what it really looks like. It will have a built-in antenna and an SD slot. Of course, it will also use Palm's Universal Connector that appears on the m500 series.

Review: LandWare Floating Point Stylus

While many people turn to external keyboards to make entering text into their handhelds easier, this isn't the best solution for everyone. LandWare makes the Floating Point stylus that actually improves the process of entering Graffiti. News Editor Ed Hardy has been using one of these and brings us this report.

Parlay Dialer Speeds Phone Use

Synchroscan, a provider of wireless peripherals for handheld computers, announced today the Parlay Dialer, a wireless automatic phone dialer. It connects to the phone line and sits beside the phone. A contact is selected from a user's address book and beamed to the dialer. When the phone is picked up, the number is dialed automatically. The Parlay Dialer works with all handhelds that have an infrared port and hooks to standard, analog phone lines. It should be available in early September. A price isn't yet available.

Add a Bar Code Reader to the CarpeDiem V

REALVision has created a bar code reader expansion module for the CarpeDiem V, a GSM wireless voice and data modem for the Palm V series. The company has taken a module approach to expand the capability of the CarpeDiem V. The add-on module attaches to the back of CarpeDiem, actually fitting into the battery slot. It costs $600 and if ordered now, will be delivered in three weeks..

Linux OS for Palm Hardware Available

Empower Technologies announced today at the LinuxWorld Expo that it has released the full version of the Linux DA operating system for the Palm IIIx, IIIxe, and Vx. They also announced licencing deals with two Taiwanese companies to ship handhelds with their OS preinstalled.

Linux DA O/S v1.0 DBE replaces the Palm OS within the handheld but still remains fully compatible with the hardware. Using the open source Linux kernel, they created the first Linux compatible OS scaled down for Palm platform. Linux DA can back up to a desktop PC and is able to utilize handwriting recognition for data input.

AlphaSmart Licenses Palm OS

AlphaSmart, Inc., a developer of low-cost computers for education, has licensed the Palm OS platform. The company will be introducing Palm-based products in the future for high schools, community colleges, and universities.

They are the developer of the AlphaSmart 3000, a low-cost, portable computer used by millions of students in the United States and throughout the world. The PalmOS-based products the company will be creating won't replace the AlphaSmart 3000; instead the two will work together, with the PalmOS products typically costing more than the current ones.

Nagel to Head Palm OS Unit

Palm Inc. has picked David Nagel, AT&T's chief technology officer and a former Apple VP, to become president and CEO of its Platform Solutions subsidiary, the part of the company responsible for the Palm OS and other software. He is replacing Alan Kessler who resigned a few weeks ago. Nagel will start work at Palm in September and retain his seat on Palm's board.
