A federal Judge has dismissed a
lawsuit brought by Xerox against 3Com. Xerox claimed that Graffiti violates their patented "Unistroke" software that recognizes one-stroke motions as characters. Today, U.S. District Judge Michael A. Telesca granted 3Com's dismissal motion, saying there was "no genuine issue as to any material fact." Xerox was hoping to force Palm and other handheld makers to pay a licensing fee. They still have the option to appeal.

A virus aimed at cell phones and spread via e-mail has been
discovered in Spain. While there is currently no danger from this virus to the Palm community, it is a harbinger of bad times to come. “Virus writers are starting to target handhelds and mobile phones,” said Mikko Hypponen, chief scientist for the Finland-based F-Secure antivirus company. “That’s what’s significant about this virus.”
We can only hope that Palm will realize the importance of building security into its systems. As handhelds leave their previous isolation and join the networked world, the danger of virus infection increases every day.

Charles Schwab, the premier U.S. discount and Internet brokerage, said Monday it would allow customers to trade stocks via their Palm handhelds usings its PocketBroker service. "This is going to be the year that we'll see whether customers are going to adopt (wireless trading)," said Nasos Topakas, vice president of Schwab's wireless group. Schwab surveyed its customers about three years ago and found little interest in wireless trading, but a late 1999 survey showed strong demand for the service, Topakas added. Schwab's move comes more than a year after Fidelity Investments (and at least several months after other rivals) began offering wireless services.
