Sieve through the older reviews and comments about this particular backup software and you will find that it has since come of age, and remains an essential piece of software to own, easily deserving one of Palm’s all time "must haves" awards, if ever there were one. Now, from the same software powerhouse comes InstallBuddy.

Getting closer to the IPO

We now have an approximate date for the IPO, if you look at the bottom of Palm's company snapshot over at Hoovers, they are expecting Feb. 28. And there's more good news and an analysis of the IPO over at Fortune. The Palm OS is the de facto standard, while Windows CE, is sucking wind. "Palm is going to be one of these IPOs that go out at seemingly silly valuations," predicts analyst Paul Sagawa.

Palm Embraces Mobile Phones

Computer Currents has an article on the GSM World Congress. At the congress Palm Computing showed off a variety of mobile applications with its Palm PDA working across GSM connections using hardware from Alcatel, Motorola and Sagem. They don't mention what Palm they used, but it was able to access wireless Web Clipping apps and WAP sites.

Palm as a cracking tool

Securiteam.com have announced their plans to make the Palm the ultimate hacking tool. They also revealed one of the first such tools: PalmCrack a NT/UNIX/Cisco password cracker.

Palm drops prices

As seen in this PCWorld article, Palm Computing slashed prices on their existing line of handhelds. The Palm IIIe drops from $179 to $149, The IIIx $299 to $229, The V is down to $329, the Vx is down to $399 from $449 and the VII is also down $50 to $449. They attribute the price drops to new competition and a broader market, but we all know when Palm drops prices something new is headed our way...

Palm wireless news

The Register reports that France Telecom has opted for a combination of Palm Computing client and IBM back-end system for a wireless data system for businesses. The new service will combine Internet access and access to corporate applications via Palm devices. Also in the news today, Netscape and Sun will soon ship wireless software that will let people access their email, calendars and address books from their cell phones and other handheld devices, such as Palm VIIs and Palm Vs with OmniSky.

Inching closer to color

The latest word on the release of the color Palm IIIc comes to us from ZDNet. The article goes into some new features in OS 3.5 and the impact of color screens. Sources said it may ship preinstalled in some devices including the Vx before it is formally launched, support 4-bit grayscale in the standard launcher and more sophisticated power management capabilities. Also look for another flash rom upgrade once the new devices are officially launched.

Geek.com review of Silkyboard

If you're looking for an alternative to Graffiti, you'll be interested in Geek.com's review of Silkyboard. Silkyboard is a sticker-like, replaceable "keyboard" you put over the Palm's Graffiti area, and it allows you to tap in letters or do Graffiti. OmniSky extends beta program

In OmniSky's latest press release seen here, they announce the extension of the wireless Palm V Internet service beta program. They boosted the trial cap to 7500 customers. OmniSky expects to formally launch the service in April, prior to that, they will make revised software available to OmniSky product evaluators. Read more for the full press release announcement.
