Garmin to Use Palm OS in GPS Devices

Garmin Corporation, a provider of navigation, communication and information electronics, has licenced the Palm OS for a new line of handheld products with Garmin's GPS hardware and software built in. Under the terms of the agreement, Garmin will develop, manufacture, and market location-enabled handhelds that will be able to run all Palm applications. They will likely reach market early next year.

Gary Kelley, director of marketing for Garmin said, "Location technology is becoming a key ingredient in mobile computing platforms. The convergence of location technologies with Personal Information Management (PIM) and communication functions will provide customers a higher level of convenience and confidence, particularly when traveling to unfamiliar destinations."

"Palm looks for market leaders to expand the Palm(TM) Economy in new directions," said Alan Kessler, chief operating officer for Products and Platform at Palm, Inc. "Location-based services and wireless applications are key components in our efforts to expand the Palm Economy. Garmin's leadership and strength in GPS solutions will provide customers with handhelds that are well-equipped to provide information about where they are, wherever they are."

Garmin designs and manufactures navigation, communication and information electronics. There are more than 50 models of GPS devices designed and manufactured by the company.

If it has a port for a serial cable you can. I'm not familiar with the eTrex so I dunno if it has this port or not. The III+ and the GPS 12 both have it.

QuoVadis will read NMEA output from the Garmin and show your position and heading, etc. on maps.

Yes you can. I bought such a PFrank cable from my ETrex to Palm III. Since my Palm III has been stolen :-(( I still have this cable, useless...

By the way, it perfectly works.
