PalmSource Announces Standard Palm OS Mail Client

PalmSource and Visto Corporation today announced the availability of Mobile Mail 5.0 for Palm OS Cobalt and Palm OS Garnet. The new email program will be the future standard Palm OS email application and will allow wireless email, and support POP3, IMAP and MS exchange servers.

Mobile Mail 5.0 is the result of a joint development effort between PalmSource and Visto, announced in June 2003, to create a standard platform email client for the Palm OS platform. Mobile Mail 5.0 can be easily configured to work with Visto's mobile email solutions geared towards the mobile market. Wireless operators and Palm OS licensees will be able to provision Mobile Mail 5.0 for their customers using Visto Mobile Personal Edition for access to email on Palm Powered devices. Additionally, IT departments can use Mobile Mail with Visto Mobile Enterprise Server, giving enterprise employees access to corporate data and email on their Palm Powered devices.

Mobile Mail 5.0 is designed to provide secure and reliable, out-of-the-box wireless email functionality between Palm Powered smart mobile devices and corporate email servers such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino and POP3/IMAP email servers, allowing enterprise users and consumers to stay connected to corporate data while away from the office. PalmSource and Visto will showcase a demo version of Mobile Mail 5.0 this week at CTIA Wireless at the PalmSource Booth #4069 -- Hall B4 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Mobile Mail 5.0 Key Features:

Over-the-air push email as well as scheduled or user initiated email synchronization;
Easy configuration of email accounts setup;
Support for MS Exchange, Lotus Domino, through integration with Visto Mobile Personal Edition and Visto Mobile Enterprise Server;
Implements standard email protocols such as IMAP, POP3 and SMTP solution portfolio to meet the needs of mobile professionals, SMEs and large enterprises;
Improved security through SSL support and encrypted authentication; and
Enhanced IMAP folder support enables users to subscribe to up to 16 server folders.

Just a Demo Version For Now

Note well the sentence: "PalmSource and Visto will showcase a demo version of Mobile Mail 5.0 this week at CTIA Wireless" so we can expect a full version is some time off.

Demo and beta aren't necessarily the same. If this is in good enough shape to demo the capabilities of the client, a full version may be closer than we think.

It's server folders (IMAP), not just servers.

Absolutely agree.

I have to defend the developers a bit, though. There is a tradeoff in developing code as to whether you use dynamic or static memory management. Static management is much easier and usually less error-prone, but demands that you declare the largest size of an item up front. It is so easy to fall into this kind of trap that developers sometimes don't even know they're doing it.

That's why we're here to give them a virtual slap in the face. :-)

Oh no - another Palm e-mail client! Is Palm going to continue development of Versamail or is this going to be another saga for anyone wanting to keep up-to-date?

Palm just keeps on putting new e-mail clients on new handhelds and blatantly ignoring its installed user base. Either it expects existing users to cough up the full price for the new version (when it offers it separately) or doesn't even offer the new version to existing users and the only way you can benefit from the improvements is to purchase a new handheld.

I've gone from Multimail to Versamail 2.0 to Versamail 2.5 and had to cough up full price each time.

Sorry - I don't normally get uptight about these things but I think that when it comes to mail, Palm has lost the plot......

didn't palm brought multiMail (versMail) a couple of years ago? it was a good concept but the interface sucks and never really updated. I guess they have money back then ;)

PalmOne owns VersaMail. This is probably the 'standard' e-mail client PalmSource wants to build into the OS. Choice is a good thing. Right now I think VersaMail is one of the best PDA mail clients out there.

My only thought is that unless they take a serious look at Snapper mail and at least try and copy some of their features the PalmOne new eMail software will be as lame as all their other tries.
