Comments on: Rumor: New Color Palm Picture?

Click for Larger Image PalmStation.com has a picture of what might be the new color Palm that is going to be released in the next few months. Or it might be the product of someone's imagination; PalmStation received the picture anonymously.

It is labeled the "m505", which fits in with Palm's new naming scheme. It has separate up and down scroll buttons, not a rocker switch like the current V models but the m100 has separate ones, too. The screen shot shows an app called Card Info, which is presumably for the SD card port.

If this is a hoax, it is a very well done one. I've seen just enough of these turn out to be the real thing to not dismiss this out of hand. Don't forget, pictures and details of the m100 leaked out before it was released, too.

I've already decided that my next Palm is going to be the color V replacement, whether this is a picture of it or not. My IIIx is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Just as a side note, I'd be willing to bet that the m500 is going to be the grayscale version of this.

I'm a proud owner of the old but proven Palm V and I love it to death. Slap some more megs in, a removable storage/expansion slot and some color, and I'd be happy to replace my own.

As for the picture, it looks convicning to me as well. Let's just hope!

Unfortunately, I do this for a living on TV commercials and features. The shadow along the top edge of the screen is too perfect and does not blend the way it should. I would love it if this was real as I have a large investment in Palm V accesories, but I' pretty sure this is not a real picture. The buttons look real and might very well be from the real thing, but I believe that the screen is not.

I agree this picture is almost certainly a mockup with the screenshot pasted in. However, the question is, was it created by Palm or by some bored Palm fan?

Just because the image isn't an actual picture, doesn't mean it isn't a real representation of an upcoming model. For example, if you look on Palm's site, you'll see that most of the pictures of Palm models are mockups. These let marketing types show an idealized view of the product.

Still, I'm not saying it is and I'm not saying it isn't. I'm solidly non-committal. At the very least, it is probably close to what it will look like.

it could either have come from a very artistic palm enthusiast or from Palm itself. It must be trying to see how the public would react to this color palm v.

well, here's my reaction: i'm willing to buy it the day it reaches the shops. i'm very happy with my palm vx and i believe this m505 is more than worthy of being my next most significant investment.

i hope they release it soon. :)

This has a feel of authenticity, but there is one thing that bothers me, the numbering scheme. It would seem to me that this would make more sense called the c505 rahter than the m505, whereas 'c' is for the color models and 'm' is for the monochrome models.... What does everyone else think?

By the way, the recessed buttons look like they take into consideration the accidental activation of the Palm V design that way too many of us are familiar with.

We can only hope it's true (and may the screen will use OLED technology (http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/specialProducts/OEL/overview.shtml)!!

Oh... one other thing I just noticed... the graffiti area is the same color scheme (inverted white logos and boxes on slate grey) as on the Palm IIIc, a color device. Somebody was really paying attention to detail in mocking this up or this is the real thing....

What about this stuffs?

One more thing. Did you notice that the fourth button is now default to Note Pad, which I believe is different from Memo Pad. By the looks of the icon, I think it supports sketches.

Reading all these makes me all the more excited. Can anybody from Palm please say something?!?

Another thing. I saw the SD add-ons. Wow!

Speaking of the SD add-ons, take another look at the clear empty case that Palm displayed at the CES earlier this month: http://www.palminfocenter.com/images/sd2_lg.jpg

I can't tell if the shape is exactly the same as the leaked m505 image. It seems a bit off but it is hard to tell because they are at such different angles.

To answer a previous question, yes, this device is supposed to work with that full array of SD add-ons.

    If it is a fake, we reckon it's simply a mix between a new, monochrome m505 and another new colour PDA - in short the screen and shell pics are genuine, they just don't go together.

If this picture is real, then Xmas has come early this year! The great thing about Palm is that these guys don't rest on their laurels for long. A slim color palm would be a dream come true for many of us. I just hope it comes with a change of shorts!

if sd is one of main features of the next generation of palms, then it would make no sense why they would not include it on every model. it's like handspring making a model without a springboard slot.

We all had this conversation in late September or early October when a pic of the Prism was leaked. Everyone thought it was a fake and it turned out to be the real thing.

I am sure that the screen is a mockup. The device is in all likelyhood the read deal.

We will know soon enough. Palm usually introduces new models in February.

Happens every year and it's always fun. Like Christmas in Feburary. And I just talked myself into trading up my Vx for a Prism. Now I have to wonder though...

I have a Prism and it's great. From what I've read about the new color Palm, there aren't too many improvememnts over what the Prism offers right now. And some of the improvements that OS4 promises won't be ready when the new unit is launched.

I have no doubt that it will be a huge seller. They just won't be getting my $500 anytime soon. I've already sunk enough money into HS peripherials to stick with it for the time being.

Wow, it's stunning. Its design is suave and sophisticated. It has a groovy drop-shadow.

It's a shame it's going to be mind-blowingly expensive.

Probably. Maybe you'll catch one on sale for $479.99. But I doubt it. You've got a better chance of stumbling upon the elusive iPaq H3650 at Walmart.

If it's anything like the Palm V,Vx, IIIc (though almost affordable now), and the oh-so-pricey Visor Prism. No thanks. Functionally overpriced-- the addtional price of color is not worth the base set of functionality. Nor is the slightly slimmed down design of the V series.

Don't get me wrong-- I'd love to have one-- if it was US$300 or less. Especially if you're going to have to add the SD add-ons-- what will they cost? If the pricing model is anything like SpringBoard modules, well, we are going to start to see some significant loss of marketshare of PalmOS to the PocketPC. Having to spend and extra wad of cash for an MP3 add-on-- why do it if it's already built in? And who is the marketing genious behind some of the finer Palm add-ons-- a MIDI player that plugs into the Palm? There's a frustrating waste of silicon.

IIIxe, TRGPro, and for the entry-level kiddies, the m100- those are still the best deals going for PalmOS- a ton of bang for the buck-- and will be for some time until the color units become more reasonably priced.

Hey --- Functionality overpriced?? No.

32Mb, where can you find a palm with over 8? And hey, eBay has factory sealed ones selling at ~$400 - with PCMCIA Capabilities. And with a Sony TFT color screen, one of the best, you cant go wrong. A built in mic, stereo out, (Surprisingly loud), ambient light sensor, a great 5 way joystick, and real 3D gaming, how could you possibly buy a 4-color palm with beeps as it's highest potential?

mind you, im just going by what this little picture looks like, but what is it going to do that my palm iii wont do? mp3 add-ons via the SD slot? i can buy a standalone mp3 player for the amount theyd probably charge. sure it probably has more memory and a color screen, but wheres the INNOVATION that put palm where they are today?

The question is, will Palm once again screw us and change the serial port so that we have to
buy all new accessories!?!!? I'd probably fork over the cash if it was compatable with my
OmniSky Minstrel, and had a faster CPU.

The other question is, how long before the SD accessories appear? The Spingboards didn't
come out for months after the Visor's came out. And there still isn't the number of spring boards
that they implied would exist.

Palm announced recently that all future Palms would have a standard shaped serial connector so they could share some peripherals. However, they didn't say it would be the connector used by any current model so the upcoming one may be the first out with it.

Having to buy all new peripherals every time we upgrade is ridiculous but the nightmare may be drawing to a close. And not too soon for me.

I hope someone makes an adapter so I can use my III series stuff on the new model.

Oh dear, someone just reminded me that while Palm announced at PalmSource that they would begin using a uniform base connector so all future models will be able to use the same cradles, cables, and external hardware modules., they also mentioned that there would be one more model coming out that doesn't use it. The m500/505 could be it.

According to the article, at $635 list, the M505 is at a higher price point than the elusive iPAQ AND the Jornada! There has to be some value-add somewhere.

The price that ZDNet listed is in Francs! It comes out to about $90 USD. I wish that was actually the price though :) We'll just have to wait and see!

I'd love to know how this Staples employee could get a price on an item that is not yet in their system. I too work for Staples and have not heard a word on the new Palm. Believe me, I have been looking! If it's not in our system, then he was only guessing. There is no way he could know what the price will be.

As much as i doubt myself, i believe this picture is real, just look at it, the thought that went into it. Would somehting trying to fake one take so much effort into it? I mean, if the person faking it has incorperated all these "real" elements, then i think he should be working for palm rite now. As for me, i'm going to the store to line up rite now! BYE!

When you weigh price against functionality it just doesn’t seem worth it. I owned a palm V, the longer I used it the more I kept trying to force it to do things that the pocket PC does out of the box. Several months later I started getting tired of having to fork out additional $$$ for add on software that would increase it's functionality. I picked up a Compaq i paq last week and love I love it! It has everything you need right out of the box! Palm Pilots are nothing more than an overpriced organizer.

I have a Palm V, Handspring Prism, and Compaq iPaq 3650
The iPaq is headed for ebay this weekend and I will keep the money from its sale until they release the Palm M505. I have been waiting forever for this. I finally could not resist temptation and bought the Prism from Amazon on 12-31-00 the last day of the $50 off code. I had another $15 code so the Prism only cost me $384. I'll pay $549 for a M505 in a heartbeat. The pic looks pretty legit. Please release it sooner than later. All you excellent detectives out there keep the info flowing.

The price of the new Palms will be $50-100 more than what Visor is charging for their similar units. It won't be equivalent or less. It actually is not in Palm's interest to compete too aggressively with its licensees. Also, unless you can run apps off the SD memory like what the TRGPro can do from CompactFlash, there is really no real urgency to get it apart from the very important ~cool~ factor.

I've also heard that the new color Palm M505 will have a reflective screen just like Compaq's Ipaq. If this is true, the M505 will be hard to beat. Anyone who has seen the Ipaq's screen in direct sunlight knows what I'm talking about. The screen is great! I hope Palm gets this one right. Otherwise, looking at the color screen in direct sunlight will only show a washed out appearance.

I really really hope that the m50x has a metal case like the Palm V series, unlike the m100. That metal case has saved me so many times from having to replace my entire unit.

I don't think PALM has metal case. I bought one, turns out it plastic with light aluminumum decoration. Only metal cases from RHINOSKIN, ALUMINUM AND TITANIUM.

I would love to know if anyone knows whether or not this new color palm V (of which is the only kind I would ever want to buy being that I have owned at one time or another all the models) would be compatible with the internet wireless service Omnisky? I'm afraid someone has given you incorrect information. Novatel Wireless, the company that makes the modems resold by OmniSky, didn't make a IIIc version because not enough IIIc's were sold to justify the cost of creating one. It had nothing to do with the OS. In fact, some brave souls did modifications to their III series wireless modems to custom fit them to the IIIc and they worked fine.

I think that Novatel Wireless will make a modem for this model if enough m500/505's are sold. I don't know what that number is but it has to be pretty substantial.

Another question is whether OmniSky will resell it. Novatel makes a III series modem but OmniSky doesn't sell it because there isn't enough demand. You can buy one directly from Novatel and still use the OmniSky service but you don't get the modem discount that you would if you bought it from OmniSky.

I guess I qualify as one of those 'brave souls'. The Minstrel III
must have the clip on the rear face of the Minstrl removed.
This is not a major issue. There are two very small screws
holding it in place. The next issue is the bed length of
the IIIc. It is approximately .5 inch longer than a PALM III.
And with the upturned angle of the Minstrel bed, the IIIc
sits very loosely in the Minstrel III. I looked into forming a
rubber insert to bring the Minstrel's bed up to the same level
as the PALM IIIc's back, but ended up switching to a PALM
Vx and a Minstrel V instead.

I'd buy it if is. I only bought the Vx so that I could use Omnisky. Before that, I owned a Palm Personal (upgraded to a III) for several years. The color screen would improve readability (one of he major deficiencies of the Palm) greatly. The card port will also be useful. But, if the 505 is not compatible with Omnisky (aong with all the other programs that I use and spent weeks finding and downloading), I'll pass.
