Comments on: Palm Begins Shipping m505

Palm has begun shipping at least some m505s to those who ordered from their webstore. It is not yet known how many of them they are shipping nor whether they are also shipping the m500.

By checking Palm's Order Status page individual users should be able to learn if they are one of the lucky ones. The page should list today as the order ship date with a status of "In Process". It has been confirmed with Palm that this really means that the handheld in question is shipping today.

Ship away!

Do they even have any preorders left?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 12:23:22 PM #
Based on most of the comments on discussion boards like this one, it seems like a lot(and I do mean A LOT) of people who immediately pre-ordered from Palm.com have subsequently cancelled their orders and purchased from Staples, Office Depot, etc. Seems like Palm's got an easy job on its hands, now.

As for me, I'll stick with my trusty IIIxe for a little while longer until the initial bugs(screen problems, etc.) get worked out. Plus, I want to see the new Sony and HandEra models. And I'd like to see some competitive pricing take hold. But this is all off-topic...

At any rate, it is good to see Palm finally shipping. Perhaps they can avoid the pitfalls of undersupply that the Ipaq saw. Let's just hope that the screen issues don't turn into more lost revenue. There are already enough Palm's gathering dust in stores and warehouses.

I think it's time we all got over the screen problems. I've been using my 505 for almost a week now and it is fine (especially so OUTDOORS). Who the hell needs a bright-as-day light? Even INDOORS, it's fine. All this coming from a guy whose previous PDA was a IIIc.

Get the 505. The screen is great.

RE: Do they even have any preorders left?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:06:51 PM #
And let's not forget that this forum is not a representative sample of the whole. Most of us are early adopters - which only make up about 2% of the consumer market. Palm has plenty of preorders to take care of.

RE: Do they even have any preorders left?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:45:51 PM #
It seems to me that the majority of people complaining about the m505 screen currently have a Prism or a IIIc.

This leads me to believe that those people are just jealous/mad that they purchased a color product too soon (first generation product). The m505 screen is great, the battery life is great, and the form factor is great.
The only thing worth complaining about is the damn cradle connection. :)

RE: Do they even have any preorders left?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:54:23 PM #
I had a Prism but returned it when I heard about the M505 coming out. The FORM FACTOR is my first consideration for the Palm device I have to carry around. The Prism is much too large as is the IIIc which is why I never tried it.

The M505 is great, the screen is just what I wanted. Some will like it, some will not. Just buy the Palm that suits your needs and tastes best and live with it.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:29:16 PM #
I too cancelled my preorder with Palm (put in on the day of the announcement) after, ironically enough, picking a unit up at the Staples just a walking distance from my house. It was nice to save on shipping and to get the game card for free.

RE: Do they even have any preorders left?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 4:39:18 PM #
I just checked the Palm Store order status, and it still says "backordered" for my m505. Of course I didn't order it until March 30th, but I still expected to receive it before I saw 7 of them on the shelves at Fry's in Woodland Hills, CA last Saturday.

This is the last time I'll pre-order anything from Palm. Better to just wait until they show up in the stores.

I'll just perservere with my Vx until my Palm order arrives...

Not me

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 12:51:13 PM #
I just checked and mine has no status change. I am wondering if Palm is going to ship everything I ordered at once. I ordered the Modem and travel charger along with the M505. If that is the case I will cancel the order, because I heard some of that stuff will not be out until July. Anyone hear anything like that?

RE:Modem & Travel Charger
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:58:22 PM #
I cancelled my Pre-Order and purchased from OD last week. I am looking for the Modem and Travel Charger also. Anyone know anything about these peripherals?

not THOSE peripherals, but . . .
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 5:20:34 PM #
i work for a reseller. We won't be seeing the keyboards for months, and one supplier said they wouldn't be in the warehouse until AUGUST!!! if this are any indication, you could be waiting awhile!

Tee hee - when my Handera arrives I'll be able to use my old III series keyboard right away!

When your Handera arrives you use your grayscale, bricklike, ugly as heck handheld all you want. Nobody cares about your III Series Keyboard.

RE: Not me
JET8810 @ 5/9/2001 9:04:20 PM #
hey...i am getting a handera and im sorry man, but i think having a palm with 2 CARDS SLOTS, VIRTUAL GRAFFITI AND A REAL SPEAKER fit into the size of a III series palm with .1 ounce to spare is amazing! Im sorry if i prefer functionability to form factor, but dude this is a sweet pda! Plus, u have to pay $100 more for color, slimness and LESS FEATURES?

But not the Serial Cradle

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:17:01 PM #
I actually just got a 505 from OD and was calling Palm to cancel my preorder and she said that it had been packaged for shipment and it was too late to stop. OOPS. I had given up checking the website but now it does show in process. They are not shipping the serial cradle yet and do not know when they will be able to. Nice to have 2 of something come in and still not be able to use them in a corporate environment.

RE: But not the Serial Cradle
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:33:43 PM #
Has anybody got a serial cradle yet and if so where did you get it? I am using NT4 (sp6) and need the serial cradle so that I can actually use my palm at the office. I have been able to get the IR hotsync working but it is not the most convenient and USB is obviously not an option.

www.sparco.com

Has them - I just got mine 5 minutes ago... still trying to overright handheld right now...

TOTAL was like $40 something with 2 day shipping... I think some Office Depots have them...
A friend in NJ just bought one there.....

CircuitCity.com has Serial Cradles in stock. I received 2.

They had the Serial Cradle at Circuit City in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. They had two (now one). Yes, the cradle does work nicely with my Windows NT workstation at work. I had originally thought there was a problem with the cradle until I did a "soft reset". After that, everything clicked.

got a serial cradle
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:54:18 PM #
I picked up one from Circus City, in Nashua NH, two nights ago. I too run NT4 (SP5 I think) at work. It works fine, with the Palm Desktop 4.01. Though, I do notice one thing strange: I have my m505 set to "stay on in cradle" which it does at home, with the USB cradle (though, the sidelight turns itself off, which is a bit annoying). But with the serial cradle, at work, it does not "stay on in cradle". After the timeout, it turns itself off.

Try www.warehouse.com. I just received three from them today.

RE: But not the Serial Cradle
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 2:09:54 AM #
I got one of the 505's at Office Depot and took it back after 3 days. The color screen was ok but not really stupendous for the money. My Vx with all the accessories still works. Before I move up and have to reinvest all the money I have in my Vx accessories (keyboard, extra cradle, charger) I need to see some more bells and whistles. I like to be on the technology edge, but the 505 was just not "edgy" enough for me. And the Vx is a great buy at $299 now.

RE: But not the Serial Cradle
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 2:16:51 AM #
Plus the fact that I couldn't find a serial cradle for love or money kept me from syncing at work, which was a real pain.

RE: But not the Serial Cradle
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 3:13:28 AM #
CompUSA in California had about 20 m500 serial cradles on display today.

Circuit City also has serial cradles in the SF Bay area. They still had seven left as of 5pm yesturday. Check their website. Local CompUSA (Pleasanton, CA) had seven on their shelves.

or why i love the internet.

so after reading that they were shipping I jumped over to palm to check and see if i was one of the lucky ones who's palm 505 is shipping. Sure enough, when i got there i had a little "processing" next to the palm. About 5 minutes later the processing was replaced with a "completed". Looks like i will have my M505 tomorrow :)

now, what to do with the one that i bought through Buy.com that is also shipping to me?

RE: Staples.commies
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 6:49:02 PM #
Last Friday night 5/4 I was calling around and the local Staples had 2 505s. I asked them to hold one for me and I picked it up about 20 minutes later. I didn't have one previously reserved so who knows how many they originally had or when they'll get more.

RE: Staples.commies
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 6:51:15 PM #
when did you preorder it?? I ordered from amazon about 3 days ago. My friend also wanted one so I got in on a hot deal by ordering 2. The deal was that there was a $50 off coupon for purchases greater than $750. Also amazon has free shipping and no sales tax to califonia, so it came down to me and my friend both getting the palm m505 for $425 shipped. I figured if I went to office depot i would have to add on an extra $40 to the MSRP price of $450. So i figured I saved about $65 dollars. But now I just have to see how long this wait is for amazon to ship my order. I heard that a lot of people have preordered from amazon so I will have to wait until they fulfill those orders first, that's why i was wondering when you ordered it. thanks

RE: Staples.commies
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 7:53:23 PM #

I ordered about a month ago, too... but I'm still waiting to get it! Glad to hear they're starting to ship!

The web site still says they don't have it yet, so I bet they're shipping out all the preorders before stating availability.

I pre-ordered my m505 from necxdirect.com (Gateway accessories store) on 4/14 and the
necxdirect website shows that it's been shipped from their Fontana, California warehouse to
me (I'm in the South Bay). The ship date was 5/8. Am keeping my fingers crossed about getting
one with the brighter screen...

I know this is off topic but...

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 5:42:39 PM #
Has anyone else had a problem with the 505 locking up when syncing with the mail app on the desktop. I run Win 98SE and outlook express 5, and I can not complete a sync. It is getting frustrating.

Thanks

RE: I know this is off topic but...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 12:19:58 AM #
I had trouble synching to Outlook 97 for Calendar, Contacts, etc. and Outlook Express for mail. Once I configured my Outlook 97 to handle my mail also, everything works smooth as silk.

RE: I know this is off topic but...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 10:30:16 AM #
I had problems syncing with Netscape Calendar. Try syncing in one direction the first time (desktop overwrites handheld) for you datebood, and then sync normally. That did the trick for me.

RE: I know this is off topic but...Palm is no good...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/11/2001 1:40:38 AM #
Mine quit syncing after about 2 days of use. I talked to Palm EXTENSIVELY about this and they determined
that it was the Cradle. They also said that they couldn't replace it for 2 months. Staples, where I bought
the 505 also says no replacements for 2 months, at which time my 15 day warrantee will be over. So, I went
to staples and bought a 500. Now I have two. I did some tests and found that it was NOT my cradle
but the palm itself! So, needless to say, I will be returning them both. (500 was a huge disappointment
after the 505, which I love and will miss.)

Palm was Not very helpful at all on the phone this week either. I got the run around....had to call 5 different places
and every place would end up telling me to call the other. And they wouldn't listen to me...after I told them
what I tried, they would just suggest it again. I'm sure they were troubleshooting from a manual. Man, I'm pretty fed
up with Palm. They did not treat me well. Get this....they even had the gaul to tell me that they were getting some
505s in on wednesday, but they were all going to sales, and none were reserved for service. Were they just
trying to make me mad?

Anyway, I'm through with Palm. Maybe I'll go back to the 2 dollar notebook.

Disgusted - cancelled order and bought M505 at Office Depot

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 5:48:00 PM #
I placed a preorder with Palm for an M505.

Yet mine was listed as "Backordered" even though my local Office Depot (Minneapolis) was already on their second shipment and had some in stock.

Sheesh! What a way for Palm to treat early orders.

Disgusted, I brought home an M505 from Office Depot for $449, saved the shipping and CANCELLED the Palm order.

RE: Disgusted - cancelled order and bought M505 at Office Depot
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/12/2001 6:43:05 PM #
Ha! I cancelled all FOUR of my 505 orders. I ordered them the very first day - the Sunday when the link was on the web. I am totally disgusted with Palm for getting them out to retailers before shipping their pre-orders. Hey Palm, guess what? You pissed off a BUNCH of your most loyal customers!! You know, us evangelical types who have had every Palm ever made and are always spreading the gospel of Palm? The kind of early adopters who will drop $450 on a PDA at the blink of an eye just to try out the latest and greatest? The ones who made Palm what it is? Yeh, those customers who are now looking elsewhere for their next PDA!! I was buying 505s for myself and my partners but that is 4 orders Palm will never see again.

USA vs. Hungary

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 8:06:55 PM #
With all of these differing/conflicting screen opinions, I wonder if anyone has compared screens from a Hungary-made model vs. a USA model. I have a USA model and I love my screen. Maybe the people bitchin are looking at an inferior Hungary screen?? I wonder if the parts and/or settings are exactly the same between the two??? Any thoughts? Maybe this has something to do with the divergent perceptions of screen quality???

RE: USA vs. Hungary
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 9:33:18 PM #
I never have the opportunity to compare the screen of the Hungarian and the USA model but I do found out that the USA assembled models have differences on their screen. I bought one of my M505 from Office Depot and the other from Staples. When I turn on the front light of these units, I realised that one of the M505 has a bluish tint on its light and the other has a more reddish tint. The bluish light is brighter among the two units. The serial # of the reddish light unit is 10R114OXXXXX and the bluish unit serial # is 10R114PXXXXX (which is later model). I wonder if Palm already trying to make the screen brighter? Eventhough, the unit with the bluish tint is brighter, I like the unit with the reddish light, I think it looks better.

RE: USA vs. Hungary
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 10:10:47 PM #
I don't understand people who love the screen. I'd have taken a 256 or even 16 color screen any day if it was sharp and bright. The existing one is WAY to muddy to be useful.

I'll take the highest bidder for it and ship it out the same day I get it. Bids will go until I get the unit. email for more info

Thx

Mine shipped... but the memory card???

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 12:38:25 AM #
Well, I checked palms site and mine shipped (though
the ups tracking number doesn't seem to work). Anyhow, they backordered the 16MB memory card I ordered, which is just as well as I think I'll cancel that and get a bigger card for not much more online...

However, does anyone know if there are any constraints on SD cards? Has to be formatted special or anything? Any advantages of going with SD or MMC cards?

They even have the buggers in CompUSA here in Salt Lake, or I guess I should say "had". Played with the demo unit, screen isn't too bad. Compaq looks nicer but MUCH heavier and thicker.

Thanks,
Mark

Ok tell me what is better functionality & clarity or low visibility. Would you rather: surf AvantaGo, read email, & play games on a clear screen that lasts for months, or use a dim, reddish screen, 2 day lasting piece of 'carp' (pardon my Frence :). I don't know about you fine readers, but I don't love my cradle that much to charge every night. My friend at school, who is one of the few to even own a palm, purchased a m505 & was deeply sadn'd by the crude darkness of the screen & the poor upgradability, which makes m505 below superior (by price tofunctionality) to B&Ws like Visor. Last words: get a B&W. -Joe2k3

NY Times: "Avoid the M505 at all costs"

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 10:37:06 AM #
The New York Times has an interesting article today comparing all the new handhelds. It raves about the Clie, and damns the M505 about as much as anything I've read.

"Unfortunately, its screen is so dark that it may as well be a piece of onyx. You wonder if Palm's Silicon Valley-based designers actually looked at this thing before shipping it, or if perhaps they chose it during one of California's rolling blackouts. In any case, avoid this $450 dud at all costs."

Ouch.
