Palm has begun shipping at least some m505s to those who ordered from their webstore. It is not yet known how many of them they are shipping nor whether they are also shipping the m500. By checking Palm's Order Status page individual users should be able to learn if they are one of the lucky ones. The page should list today as the order ship date with a status of "In Process". It has been confirmed with Palm that this really means that the handheld in question is shipping today.

Ship away!

Based on most of the comments on discussion boards like this one, it seems like a lot(and I do mean A LOT) of people who immediately pre-ordered from Palm.com have subsequently cancelled their orders and purchased from Staples, Office Depot, etc. Seems like Palm's got an easy job on its hands, now. As for me, I'll stick with my trusty IIIxe for a little while longer until the initial bugs(screen problems, etc.) get worked out. Plus, I want to see the new Sony and HandEra models. And I'd like to see some competitive pricing take hold. But this is all off-topic... At any rate, it is good to see Palm finally shipping. Perhaps they can avoid the pitfalls of undersupply that the Ipaq saw. Let's just hope that the screen issues don't turn into more lost revenue. There are already enough Palm's gathering dust in stores and warehouses. RE: Do they even have any preorders left?I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:05:39 PM #
I think it's time we all got over the screen problems. I've been using my 505 for almost a week now and it is fine (especially so OUTDOORS). Who the hell needs a bright-as-day light? Even INDOORS, it's fine. All this coming from a guy whose previous PDA was a IIIc. Get the 505. The screen is great. RE: Do they even have any preorders left?I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:06:51 PM #
And let's not forget that this forum is not a representative sample of the whole. Most of us are early adopters - which only make up about 2% of the consumer market. Palm has plenty of preorders to take care of. RE: Do they even have any preorders left?I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:45:51 PM #
It seems to me that the majority of people complaining about the m505 screen currently have a Prism or a IIIc. This leads me to believe that those people are just jealous/mad that they purchased a color product too soon (first generation product). The m505 screen is great, the battery life is great, and the form factor is great. RE: Do they even have any preorders left?I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:54:23 PM #
I had a Prism but returned it when I heard about the M505 coming out. The FORM FACTOR is my first consideration for the Palm device I have to carry around. The Prism is much too large as is the IIIc which is why I never tried it. The M505 is great, the screen is just what I wanted. Some will like it, some will not. Just buy the Palm that suits your needs and tastes best and live with it. RE: Do they even have any preorders left?I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:29:16 PM #
I too cancelled my preorder with Palm (put in on the day of the announcement) after, ironically enough, picking a unit up at the Staples just a walking distance from my house. It was nice to save on shipping and to get the game card for free. RE: Do they even have any preorders left?I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 4:39:18 PM #
I just checked the Palm Store order status, and it still says "backordered" for my m505. Of course I didn't order it until March 30th, but I still expected to receive it before I saw 7 of them on the shelves at Fry's in Woodland Hills, CA last Saturday.
This is the last time I'll pre-order anything from Palm. Better to just wait until they show up in the stores. I'll just perservere with my Vx until my Palm order arrives...

I just checked and mine has no status change. I am wondering if Palm is going to ship everything I ordered at once. I ordered the Modem and travel charger along with the M505. If that is the case I will cancel the order, because I heard some of that stuff will not be out until July. Anyone hear anything like that? RE:Modem & Travel ChargerI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:58:22 PM #
I cancelled my Pre-Order and purchased from OD last week. I am looking for the Modem and Travel Charger also. Anyone know anything about these peripherals? not THOSE peripherals, but . . .I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 5:20:34 PM #
i work for a reseller. We won't be seeing the keyboards for months, and one supplier said they wouldn't be in the warehouse until AUGUST!!! if this are any indication, you could be waiting awhile! RE: Not meI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 6:38:19 PM #
Tee hee - when my Handera arrives I'll be able to use my old III series keyboard right away! When your Handera arrives....
When your Handera arrives you use your grayscale, bricklike, ugly as heck handheld all you want. Nobody cares about your III Series Keyboard. RE: Not me
hey...i am getting a handera and im sorry man, but i think having a palm with 2 CARDS SLOTS, VIRTUAL GRAFFITI AND A REAL SPEAKER fit into the size of a III series palm with .1 ounce to spare is amazing! Im sorry if i prefer functionability to form factor, but dude this is a sweet pda! Plus, u have to pay $100 more for color, slimness and LESS FEATURES?

I actually just got a 505 from OD and was calling Palm to cancel my preorder and she said that it had been packaged for shipment and it was too late to stop. OOPS. I had given up checking the website but now it does show in process. They are not shipping the serial cradle yet and do not know when they will be able to. Nice to have 2 of something come in and still not be able to use them in a corporate environment. RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:33:43 PM #
Has anybody got a serial cradle yet and if so where did you get it? I am using NT4 (sp6) and need the serial cradle so that I can actually use my palm at the office. I have been able to get the IR hotsync working but it is not the most convenient and USB is obviously not an option. RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:49:43 PM #
www.sparco.com Has them - I just got mine 5 minutes ago... still trying to overright handheld right now... TOTAL was like $40 something with 2 day shipping... I think some Office Depots have them... CircuitCity.com has Serial Cradles in stock. I received 2.I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:50:15 PM #
Works great but may not work with some hacks. RE: But not the Serial Cradle
Sparco has them in stock. I bought one from them for my PowerBook. http://www.sparco.com/cgi-bin/wfind2?spn=A412018 RE: But not the Serial Cradle
They had the Serial Cradle at Circuit City in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. They had two (now one). Yes, the cradle does work nicely with my Windows NT workstation at work. I had originally thought there was a problem with the cradle until I did a "soft reset". After that, everything clicked. -------------------- Signature? Oh yeah, I had one here a minute ago... got a serial cradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 3:54:18 PM #
I picked up one from Circus City, in Nashua NH, two nights ago. I too run NT4 (SP5 I think) at work. It works fine, with the Palm Desktop 4.01. Though, I do notice one thing strange: I have my m505 set to "stay on in cradle" which it does at home, with the USB cradle (though, the sidelight turns itself off, which is a bit annoying). But with the serial cradle, at work, it does not "stay on in cradle". After the timeout, it turns itself off. RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 5:46:50 PM #
SPARCO has ran out of serial cradles. Information on their web site is not up-to-date!!! RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 2:09:54 AM #
I got one of the 505's at Office Depot and took it back after 3 days. The color screen was ok but not really stupendous for the money. My Vx with all the accessories still works. Before I move up and have to reinvest all the money I have in my Vx accessories (keyboard, extra cradle, charger) I need to see some more bells and whistles. I like to be on the technology edge, but the 505 was just not "edgy" enough for me. And the Vx is a great buy at $299 now. RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 2:16:51 AM #
Plus the fact that I couldn't find a serial cradle for love or money kept me from syncing at work, which was a real pain. RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 3:13:28 AM #
CompUSA in California had about 20 m500 serial cradles on display today. RE: But not the Serial CradleI.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 10:43:58 AM #
Circuit City also has serial cradles in the SF Bay area. They still had seven left as of 5pm yesturday. Check their website. Local CompUSA (Pleasanton, CA) had seven on their shelves.

so after reading that they were shipping I jumped over to palm to check and see if i was one of the lucky ones who's palm 505 is shipping. Sure enough, when i got there i had a little "processing" next to the palm. About 5 minutes later the processing was replaced with a "completed". Looks like i will have my M505 tomorrow :)
now, what to do with the one that i bought through Buy.com that is also shipping to me?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 4:20:54 PM #
Anyone received one from Staples.com? That's who I'm waiting for. I'd also like to compile a list of the online merchants who have shipped, so I can put it in my next vicious e-mail to Staples. So far, I know of: Palm; J and R; Sparco; Amazon; buy.com. Any others? RE: Staples.commiesI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 5:24:38 PM #
yes... amazon has shipped.. just got mine today RE: Staples.commiesI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 6:49:02 PM #
Last Friday night 5/4 I was calling around and the local Staples had 2 505s. I asked them to hold one for me and I picked it up about 20 minutes later. I didn't have one previously reserved so who knows how many they originally had or when they'll get more. RE: Staples.commiesI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 6:51:15 PM #
when did you preorder it?? I ordered from amazon about 3 days ago. My friend also wanted one so I got in on a hot deal by ordering 2. The deal was that there was a $50 off coupon for purchases greater than $750. Also amazon has free shipping and no sales tax to califonia, so it came down to me and my friend both getting the palm m505 for $425 shipped. I figured if I went to office depot i would have to add on an extra $40 to the MSRP price of $450. So i figured I saved about $65 dollars. But now I just have to see how long this wait is for amazon to ship my order. I heard that a lot of people have preordered from amazon so I will have to wait until they fulfill those orders first, that's why i was wondering when you ordered it. thanks RE: Staples.commiesI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 7:53:23 PM #
I actually ordered from amazon about a month ago. I think that is why I got them today. RE: Staples.commiesI.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 10:20:42 PM #
I ordered about a month ago, too... but I'm still waiting to get it! Glad to hear they're starting to ship! The web site still says they don't have it yet, so I bet they're shipping out all the preorders before stating availability. RE: Staples.commiesI.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 1:57:47 AM #
I pre-ordered my m505 from necxdirect.com (Gateway accessories store) on 4/14 and the
necxdirect website shows that it's been shipped from their Fontana, California warehouse to me (I'm in the South Bay). The ship date was 5/8. Am keeping my fingers crossed about getting one with the brighter screen...

To my pleasant surprise I received my m505 today (5/9)by second-day air from Outpost.com!
