RE: Great Job Palm!
New colors? Patriotic colors?
This "If they were being "Patriotic" it would be accompanied by a big drop in price or portion being donated to help the victims in NYC." hits the nail right on the head.
It's quite sickening really.

RE: Great Job Palm!
HAH. What a waste. Handspring donated deluxes/platinums and visorphones /w service. Thats patriotism!
Price gouging helps nobody.
RE: Great Job Palm!
There are those out there (like the Claudia Greeenish.) that just like a bit of color splash on the unit. If they are going to buy a unit already why not get it a bit more personal.
Palm isn't saying this is some great new thing, just more personal... seems to have worked for Apple didn't it. Now we see all the other computer builders out there following suit. What is interesting is the PocketPC Casio (I think it was Casio, sorry.) tried colors and did not do as well as the Palm limited addition did.
The major item for all of us here, that are real 'users' is that if this is what it takes to get someone to buy a unit, then more power to Palm. Gets more units on the street, Palm makes more money to build cool new devices like we want, software developers have more customers to sell to and we all have a stronger future.

RE: Great Job Palm!
It's disgusting that your idea of patriotism is a discount off the price of something.
RE: Great Job Palm!
Schiffer, Jordan, Patriotic? PLEASE !!!
Help the industry, the economy and the nation with innovations, not with hypocrite attitudes.
Now we know why they are looking for new management, they don't have any now.

Palm did their bit after June 12 by providing wireless handhelds and other assistance.
If you want to kick those who profit from War, go after the big defense contractors and their friends in Washington, but gimme a break here.....

Ah, what a lovely string of messages -- all from people who have the time to rant but not the IQ -- or courtesy -- to *register*.
RE: Is it against the board rules to post anonymously?
Your pseudonym of 'mikecane' or whatever means absolutely zilch to me. Just have your say like everyone else and keep things civil.
RE: Great Job Palm!
You're the leader in no IQ. This is my real name and I've had articles published here. Now go take your medication.
RE: Great Job Palm!
Do any of you have a clue that the Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jordan Palns were created by PTN Media, not Palm? They came up with the idea, bought the hardware from Palm, and are now marketing and selling them. The only involvement Palm has is making money. While that's not innovative, its what companies are supposed to do. So the next time someone wants to complain about one of these, stuff it.
RE: Great Job Palm!
Isn't the Jordan m505 black like the IBM WorkPad? I'd only seen the box for it at PC Expo earlier in the year and I recall it not having the m505 silver color, but a different one that made it very attractive.

After I checked it out I saw it was not, sorry.
Another example...
I like the colors, but I just don't like the fact that Palm is using the war to sell more handhelds...

Why call it patriotic?
All marketing fluff, no substance.
1. Hi-Res Color Screen 320x320 (yes, I know of the Clie)
2. OS 5 (or an OS with DRAMATIC improvements over 1.0)
3. XScale/Strong ARM CPU
4. 32+ MB RAM Built-In
5. Built-in Wireless Capability
6. Maintain relatively slim form-factor.
These are the top five priorities that Palm should focus on getting done soon. Better late than never.
How come CPQ can get it all done and Palm can't?
What's small enough to fit in your pocket but has enough storage capacity to manage your whole life? Give up? It's the Compaq iPAQ 3835 Pocket PC. With 64MB RAM and an SD Memory Slot, the iPAQ can store all of your appointments, to-do lists and business contacts with ease while the 206MHz Intel® StrongARM processor accesses them quickly. Spreadsheet, word processing and email functions make the iPAQ truly handy and handwriting recognition and voice commands round out the package. 240 x 320 Color-Reflective TFT Liquid Crystal Display for Indoor and Outdoor Viewing (65,536 Colors).

Last check on download.com showed they have 1806 apps for PalmOS and a mere 386 for PPC.
All that power doesn't mean jack without lots of good (and preferably FREE) software to use on it.

Sure, download email while writing a memo. Exercise that limited imagination of yours.
> Let's see one compare with the m505, or Clie T415.
Do you have a Clie T415 yet? Let's see a T415 period.
> 8 MB is all the space the Palm users need! ...
> And if 8 MB of memory isn't enough,
You contradict yourself. I have 22MB of stuff on my Clie too.
> without an extra sleeve that takes up space.
How many PocketPCs have you seen?
Are you more than 12 years old?
RE: All marketing fluff, no substance.
Truthfully speaking, If Palm had the capibilities of their OS and the hardware behind it, I would consider moving to a Palm. If Linux based PDAs had the same and the software to make it worth any time I might move to that as well, but right now, Palm is behind in it's effort and is only riding on their name "Palm" and the luck that they got to the PDA market first...
But keep this mind.
Looking at the history of Palm, Palm has never made a HUGE change to their OS. Palm was in the hardware business more than the OS business ( 3Com, Palm Pilot, now Palm), and that's where their money comes from. Palm will have more of a struggle getting the new OS 5 to work like they claim it will with the ARM processor, than a company like Microsoft who only does software and OSes.
RE: All marketing fluff, no substance.
Not so. Go handle a Toshiba e570.
RE: All marketing fluff, no substance.
A lot of the Palm applications are nothing but clones of other existing applications.
I don't know if it is the same for the PocketPC, but the actual number of unique Palm apps is not nearly as many as palm would like us to believe.

Patriotism at Palm
1) To those who assault this as another example of non-innovation from Palm, I don't think they're selling this as big-time innovation. It's not like they're launching a massive advertising campaign to sell blue and red machines. It is a virtually no-cost way to sell a few more computers.
2) To the poster who is offended that Palm is using the war to sell more machines, I think you've got a decent point. But, hey, car companies have commercials about America getting back on track with 0% financing. Airlines have commercials about how much they care. It's all the same stuff. Capitalism.
RE: Patriotism at Palm
I agree with your #2 point. What's more, if people want to bash companies for cashing in on the tragedy & war, go after the airlines, farmers, oil companies, and all the other corporations that are whining that they need a "government bailout" due to fallout from Sept. 11. Who pays for that? YOU do, in the form of tax dollars. Palm is offering this up--if you don't like it, DON'T BUY IT.
And please, people, be fair. Palm donated toward the relief efforts, just like Handspring did (though not in the same way). Stop using the war as a crass effort to justify your handheld of choice...
I'd buy one...
Silver?
Gold is coming.......
Then we will deal with color, like Nokia and Motorola's V66.....face-plates...

Has to come with a Taliban bombing game....
At least the jordan palm was filled with the basketball game, so why not this patriotic one?
RE: Has to come with a Taliban bombing game....
RE: Has to come with a Taliban bombing game....
>Yes.. because Americans just love bombs
>right now... NOT! Get a clue.
Sir, if you were living in Afghanistan today you'd think that the US and the Brits were pretty enamoured with bombs, judging by the quantity raining out of the sky.
In all fairness bombing has served its role and pushed the Taliban out of its positions of power. Perhaps the time has come now to step back and try and restore order in the country. One must not forget, that the Afghani people are more or less innocent bystanders in this. The US' argument is with Osama bin Laden and al Quaeda. Even the Taliban's role was incidental. The reason they came under attack was because they failed to hand him over. Recently Spain called for Britain to hand over General Pinochet. Britain said no. Should Spain be allowed to bomb the UK? Of course not. I don't feel further widespread military action, except to support a free and fair Afghani government, is justified either. By all means attack al Quaeda strongholds, send in special forces to destroy cells (with Afghanistan's permission)
The above of course totally off topic. As for Palm milking the cow of patriotism, I must admit it would have been easier to swallow the two colour schemes, or rather their names, if they had offered a small donation to relief charities for every unit sold.

My own question is, why didn't Palm go whole hog and release a white m505 too? That might have sold the best, especially to nurses.
UGH!!!!!!!!
okay, i dont care about whether or not they're marketing it as patriotic - i like it! i think the blue is quite classy, and the red isn't too bad ether. infact, this is the sorta thing i wish there wwere all along! i mean, it gets so boring looking at one silver palm after another. and the purple clie is a bit too femenine for some of us, leaving us only w/ silver there. i am really into the blue one - now all i need is someone to buy my current palm!
just keep an open mind folks, and let everyone hold an opinion. give people a chance, dont just flame them for how they think

But, hey, the colors would have been nice if they were included from the first launch...
Hmm wonder they got the colors from...?

The difference (talking about the colored Neos) is that Palm's are on a good handheld with a great form factor!
So...
everybody's colors

He's the failed CrApple marketing exec whose best idea was the PIPPIN.
Why is it that every failed CrApple exec ends up at Palm? It must be a finishing school.
Special Edition for whom?
In Constrast, Palm Inc. doesn't have any announcement since m505. We just heard that SD is so superior to MS, don't invest too much on sony's PDA.......
But, Plam give the loyal customers a "special edition" of 505 but not a more up-to-date model.
How about special edition of Palm pilot, palm III, Palm V, and VII?
RE: Special Edition for whom?
You forgot the m125.

Palm's "un"American colors
Everyone who complained here had an impact, I guess.
OK, so I was wrong. That can happen (contrary to those who think I think I am always right!).
RE: Palm's
P.S. A little OT, but I saw an article today about the little magnetic flags people are buy and putting on their cars. It seems the flags are screwing up the paint jobs!

Great Job Palm!
Many customers are likely to look at this move as Palm trying to profit over the current situation as opposed to Palm trying to be innovative and actually being "Patriotic". If they were being "Patriotic" it would be accompanied by a big drop in price or portion being donated to help the victims in NYC. No such "Patriotism" here. Simply, a desparate effort to improve sales.
Obviously, innovation has been lacking for quite sometime. This was confirmed at this year's COMDEX. No new products from Palm. Palm's stock was riding off of Handspring's TREO Innovation.
I sure hope this isn't the future of Palm's management decisions. Why not actually add new features rather than new colors!
