Great Job Palm!

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 6:05:29 AM #
Once again Palm, you continue to amaze me in your Innovation! As if the Claudia and Jordan Palm's weren't enough... I'm quite disappointed. This is likely Carl's last big idea before getting the boot. I think this is a bad idea for Palm.

Many customers are likely to look at this move as Palm trying to profit over the current situation as opposed to Palm trying to be innovative and actually being "Patriotic". If they were being "Patriotic" it would be accompanied by a big drop in price or portion being donated to help the victims in NYC. No such "Patriotism" here. Simply, a desparate effort to improve sales.

Obviously, innovation has been lacking for quite sometime. This was confirmed at this year's COMDEX. No new products from Palm. Palm's stock was riding off of Handspring's TREO Innovation.

I sure hope this isn't the future of Palm's management decisions. Why not actually add new features rather than new colors!

I must say, I am with the first poster on this. In every way.

New colors? Patriotic colors?

This "If they were being "Patriotic" it would be accompanied by a big drop in price or portion being donated to help the victims in NYC." hits the nail right on the head.

It's quite sickening really.

Isn't this a same re-hashed idea they did with the Palm V? I think I remember seeing this same thing offered with the V along with an ugly green. Boy, you can really tell a bunch of ex-CrApples run Palm now.

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 9:48:28 AM #
Yeah the CLaudia Schiffer Palm V.

HAH. What a waste. Handspring donated deluxes/platinums and visorphones /w service. Thats patriotism!

Price gouging helps nobody.

The limited addition Palm Vx units were Gold or Blue. Blue ended up being very popular... like the black IBM unit was amongst those that care.

There are those out there (like the Claudia Greeenish.) that just like a bit of color splash on the unit. If they are going to buy a unit already why not get it a bit more personal.

Palm isn't saying this is some great new thing, just more personal... seems to have worked for Apple didn't it. Now we see all the other computer builders out there following suit. What is interesting is the PocketPC Casio (I think it was Casio, sorry.) tried colors and did not do as well as the Palm limited addition did.

The major item for all of us here, that are real 'users' is that if this is what it takes to get someone to buy a unit, then more power to Palm. Gets more units on the street, Palm makes more money to build cool new devices like we want, software developers have more customers to sell to and we all have a stronger future.

It's disgusting that your idea of patriotism is a discount off the price of something.

What is your point ? Palm's management sucks.

Schiffer, Jordan, Patriotic? PLEASE !!!

Help the industry, the economy and the nation with innovations, not with hypocrite attitudes.

Now we know why they are looking for new management, they don't have any now.

Palm donated Palm VIIx's to relief workers in NYC so they could keep in touch. They also gave millions of dollars worth of handhelds to eBay's Auction for America.

Seems like some people will always complain about something. So what if palm releases 'Limited edition' versions in 'Patriotic blue' and 'American cranberry'? Those are just colour descriptions and if they mirror the mood of the moment, so be it.Ifthey'll help sales, all the better!

Palm did their bit after June 12 by providing wireless handhelds and other assistance.

If you want to kick those who profit from War, go after the big defense contractors and their friends in Washington, but gimme a break here.....

In regard to the first commentator, I'd like to note that it's not the intention of Palm to be patriotic, but the user holding one.

People on this board are ridiculous. Palm is not offering a new unit, they are simply offering more colors which is well within their right and allows end users more personal choice of what their PDA looks like. To choose a nice shade of red and blue is nice considering the times. Palm is not claiming they are doing this for any reason other than to offer new colors so why people knock them for it is beyond my understand. Yes I would like to see a m525 with 320x320 bright color screen with 16 RAM and a new processor but in the meanwhile if you are in the market for an m505 you have more choice and that is never bad.

mikecane @ 11/19/2001 8:53:08 AM #
Not everyone wants 320x320. Sony has that now. Most people want 240x320 with Soft Graffiti.

Ah, what a lovely string of messages -- all from people who have the time to rant but not the IQ -- or courtesy -- to *register*.

RE: Is it against the board rules to post anonymously?
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/19/2001 9:22:39 AM #
As long as this board allows anonymous posting, I am perfectly within my right to choose to post anonymously without having to be insulted or have my IQ questioned.

Your pseudonym of 'mikecane' or whatever means absolutely zilch to me. Just have your say like everyone else and keep things civil.

Hey, brain trust, many people here who post anonymously do so *every damned day.* If you're going to be a regular, take the time to put a name to your comments and stand by them.

You're the leader in no IQ. This is my real name and I've had articles published here. Now go take your medication.

Palm's management sucks. Schiffer, Jordan, <snip>

Do any of you have a clue that the Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jordan Palns were created by PTN Media, not Palm? They came up with the idea, bought the hardware from Palm, and are now marketing and selling them. The only involvement Palm has is making money. While that's not innovative, its what companies are supposed to do. So the next time someone wants to complain about one of these, stuff it.

RE: Great Job Palm!
mikecane @ 11/19/2001 10:03:18 AM #
Thanks for clarifying that for us. I hadn't heard the details.

Isn't the Jordan m505 black like the IBM WorkPad? I'd only seen the box for it at PC Expo earlier in the year and I recall it not having the m505 silver color, but a different one that made it very attractive.

New Palm Commercials

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 9:29:43 AM #
I have to admit though, I do like the new Palm commercials featuring the SD Card and the m505. I like the music, I like the visuals, and they are playing it alot so it may have some impact - and Christmas shopping season is here. This is one of the few things Palm has done right lately. Kudos to their ad agency.

Does anyone know where I can download or view these new commercials? Palm doesn't have them posted on their site. I would love to be able to download these in Quicktime format.

yes - on TV.

In regards to my last post, the ad that I linked to was the old one. When I read the post on Ludipocket I thought it implied it was the new one for the 500 series.

After I checked it out I saw it was not, sorry.

...of trying to cash in on the "patriotic hysteria" in the US today.

I like the colors, but I just don't like the fact that Palm is using the war to sell more handhelds...

RE: Another example...
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 7:57:04 PM #
I have to agree. I read some of the upper posts fromother whoa re defending what Palm is doing and I just laugh. It's true Palm has the right to make their devices in any color they want to help boost sales, but truth be told, Palm is doing it to ride on the profits of Patrisim on the nation. I Palm could of, should of done a better job if they wanted to make these really patrisim for those people who are trying and want to support the U.S. cause in it's recent events. EVEN APPLE computers haven't stooped so low as to use the current events make a buck from everything that has happened recently, and they are the king of eye candy. When they have nothing big to show the world or any new technology, they redesign their iMacs and Laptops. Palm should of just called these "Palms Christmas Additions" or something and they could even just charged doubled for them.....And I'm sure people would of bought them up.

RE: Another example...
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 10:07:49 PM #
geeze! they could of made a transperent. the worlds' computer

So, do you have a problem with stores that are selling flags and other patriotic accessories? Are you boycotting these products?

?????????

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 9:55:26 AM #
And Firebirds are quite an improvement over Camaros, as are Johnson outboards over Evinrudes. Last I heard, Outboard Marine was belly-up, and GM is dropping the Camaro/Firebird. Why don't they include a nice, patriotic card-integration feature like PiDirect? They could even use red/ white & blue pixels. I can't see me buying another Handspring, but kudos to them for shipping a bunch to NYC. That is patriotic. This is more like selling cheap plastic flags that fasten to your car's window, and none of the proceeds go to the relief effort.

Why call it patriotic?

wilco @ 11/18/2001 10:23:20 AM #
The colors themselves are cool. It extend the product's lifecycle, like Nintendo do with Gameboy/N64 or Apple with iMac. But to call it patriotic is wrong, especially this late, when there is a public backlash about this 'patriotic commercialism (Note the X-cam type ads for American Flags)'. To be truly patriotic, they should donate all proceeds to the victims of the Sept.11 tragedy or to the Coffers to Uncle Sam. They could have marketed it better as "Limited Edition" or "Collectors-Edition" Palms.

All marketing fluff, no substance.

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 10:48:15 AM #
We have a buch of marketing people at Palm and not a whole lot of R&D people. The money has been going to marketing, not R&D - hence the result. Here's what Palm should have had at market by now:

1. Hi-Res Color Screen 320x320 (yes, I know of the Clie)
2. OS 5 (or an OS with DRAMATIC improvements over 1.0)
3. XScale/Strong ARM CPU
4. 32+ MB RAM Built-In
5. Built-in Wireless Capability
6. Maintain relatively slim form-factor.

These are the top five priorities that Palm should focus on getting done soon. Better late than never.

SIX

You forgot to mention that this cost $600, half agin the price of the m505. And you better have a damn big pocket to put it into, too.

Yeah.. the iPaq (and other PocketPC's) are nice.. but the operating system still SUCKS.

Last check on download.com showed they have 1806 apps for PalmOS and a mere 386 for PPC.

All that power doesn't mean jack without lots of good (and preferably FREE) software to use on it.

RE: All marketing fluff, no substance.
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/18/2001 9:22:57 PM #
Oh please...the Pocket PC operating is more versital than the Palm OS can ever hope to be in it's current state. The mear fact that it can do true mult-processing as compared to Palm's singulare processing puts the PPC OS years ahead of the Palm. The PPC OS is very stable and anyone who says different must be a true Palm user who barley can operate the remote control for their television and has never really used the OS. The fact that PPC doesn't have as many apps, like the incredible mirror on the Palm, or Tic-Tac-Toe, leaves the PPC with even more credability, since you know what you are paying for is quality and will actually work. And for those of you who may actually wadge a Palm between your butt checks, a naket iPaq will fit in any shirt pocket. And the price is not much more than many higher end Palm based OS PDA. When you think 8 megs or 16 megs verses 64 megs, plus the SD slot that can still be used, and the the sleeve if needed, and intergrated BlueTooth, keeps the PPC even cheaper than any Palm for what you can get and what it can do on a dollar per dollar bases.
