Comments on: Palm Showing Off New Handhelds in TV Ads

Palm, Inc. has launched a new U.S. TV and online ad campaign that features the company's newest products: the m130, m515 and i705. It includes a 30-second TV spot that will air on national network and cable, and is scheduled to run for five weeks. The commercial has three parts that seek to demonstrate how each of the new handhelds enhances the lifestyles of a wide range of users, and that show that no matter what the user wants to do, there is a Palm handheld that can help do it better.

Techno-Phonic TV Ad

I really liked that techno-phonic colorful one featuring the m505/SD Slot that they did several months ago.

Palm Inside

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/26/2002 11:19:07 AM #
I think a Palm Inside campaign a la Intel Inside would do more for Palm than a hardware "experience" type of campaign. The current hardware selection from Palm is hardly anything to shout about. Perhaps the m130; only because it is the cheapest colored Palm OS device but the m515 and i705?

If they included Handspring and Sony - which obviously have far more interesting products in their lineup, people might then learn about how powerful and versatile this platform is. But then again, I guess they are coughing up every single penny of their own and would not want to share their limelight with their licensees. What a pity. I guess when placed next to Treos and Clies, I would think twice too.

" I think a Palm Inside campaign a la Intel Inside would do more for Palm than a hardware "experience" type of campaign."

That would work great for the PALMSOURCE division but for PALM which only makes PALM devices...I think not.

Wow, you think Handspring "obviously" has more interesting products in their lineup? Are you basing this on products available 2 years ago?

Sony, I'll give you, but Handspring?

At any rate, you need to understand that these ads are geared toward TYPICAL consumers--the kind who see PDAs on TV, not on sites like PIC. They're generally quite impressed with what Palm has to offer. Some of us are less impressed because we're more well-versed in the advanced capabilities of different machines. Face it, the typical consumer cares very little about hi-res, virtual graffiti, built-in Bluetooth, and all the other "goodies" that PDAs are starting to pack. The typical consumer looks at the Sony NR series and says "Damn! That's freaking expensive!" Then they go buy an m130, or an m515 if they want something sleeker.

I see. You have no money to buy a Treo...

Intel would crush like a bug Palm if they tried to steal their marketing slogan.

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/26/2002 2:24:52 PM #
Hey, stupid - he never said Palm should steal the Intel inside slogan.

Give me an R
Give me an E
Give me an A
Give me an D

what does it spell? READ!

RE: Palm Inside
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/26/2002 2:29:26 PM #
You need B-slapped. Intel would crush them even if they used "Palm Inside". Now go back to pushing papers.

RE: Palm Inside
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/26/2002 2:32:43 PM #
Oh? And what if there was an Intel CPU inside a Palm OS device? Considering that Intel is a slicon partner with for the new ARM based devices, that is a possiblity. Intel Inside for a Palm OS device is not out of the question.

RE: Palm Inside
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/26/2002 2:41:53 PM #
My original point was that they couldn't use "Palm Inside" you imbecile. Of course Intel would allow "Intel Inside" if it was their chip. Palm already has "Palm Powered" which is their version of "Intel Inside". BTW - I own lots of INTC and you are a nobody.

c_blue @ 3/26/2002 2:45:20 PM #
I thought that was the idea of the "palm powered" slogan... that's a way to say palm inside right???

I really wish you children would go do your homework or something and leave the serious discussions to those of us who don't still wet the bed. It's obvious from most of the postings here that 1) most of you are still teens, and 2) don't have a wit of business sense.

Dear "DAD" - Thanks for your 2 cents. You really brought a lot to the discussion.

Hey Ed, is there a way you can tell us some demo/psychographics of readers that comes to this site? It seems to me the majority of these people who comment in this forum are:

1. imbeciles
2. frustrated so they flame at any opportunity
3. can't read
4. all of the above

Good grief, the original post was a suggestion and some imbecile is splitting hair over PalmSource and Palm, Inc. And, it isn't saying use the same tagline as Intel. Which one reader very sharply pointed out that that might not be too far away.

We have been flamed in Slashdot as kiddies and immature and I can see why.

I agree with the previous two postings. There is something to be said about brand marketing. Certain things can always be duplicated, especially tangible things like hardware. Many times, once you get past the extreme populations, techies and so forth, you find the general population is not so educated on hardware specs, such as which display types, ram/flash and so forth. This mass population is who Palm is trying to reach, arguably a more valuable audience.

Also, things like sustainable competitive advantages(SCA) are typically built around things that cannot be reproduced. Such as community, like the palm commercials. Thats the difference between sustainable competitive advatages and sustainable competitive necessities. You can also improve memory, functions and so forth, but it is not so easy to reproduce collective pride of group owners. That's what Palm has and is trying to exploit.

Ads should show that PDA´s are not only for PIM

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 11:41:07 AM #
Although it is one of the main features a Palm is bought for, I have experienced that most people tend to use their PDA´s mainly for other things, like

- acquiring, keeping and synchronizing data
- reading news and books
- surfing the net
- checking mails
- having the ability to carry dozens of normally hundreds of pages long manuals with you in your pocket (while your are additionally able to do a search on them)
- playing games while they are on the road
etc.)
- etc., etc., etc.

- so there is so much more than storing 8000 addresses and 1000 memos into these devices. That´s why I think the ad campaigns should show that.

Especially here in Germany, where people are very conservative about spending money for nonsense it is funny that these devices are marketed as address books, which they are of course useful for, but too expensive - who the hell pays 300 to 500 $ for an address book (which can additionally run out of batteries when I need it) without getting any additional benefits ???

RE: Ads should show that PDA´s are not only for PIM
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 7:09:50 PM #
Actually, I've seen reports that still 60% of all PDA users only use the four basic PIM funtions, DB,
Address, Todo and memo. And many of the ones I know actually are limited to only DB and
address. I don't know what the percentages are for these 60% of users, but I know many of them
are aware of third-party apps, but chose not to use them.

At PalmSource, Mike Mace released the results of a survey that showed that 82% of Palm users are aware that they can load third-party applications onto their handhelds and 67% have done so.

Well, varying survey reports not uncommon. I'm pretty sure I've still got that information somewhere...

Waiting

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 6:58:10 PM #
Palm has to stop marketing sub-par products when there is Sony (not so much Handspring) doing products better with everything Palm has to offer and more. I like the idea of always on email for the i705 but to tell you the truth I would not want to spend $450 on a product that is hardly an upgrade to the VII series. I am, however, interested in the scarcely talked about i725. Searching long and hard for any website that has any information about the i725 is useless (believe me-I've tried). I've heard there will be a phone, color, and more memory but can anybody tell me ANY other information about this thing??? I'm dying to find anything about it and if the phone will be Cingular. Anybody know ANYTHING???

RE: Waiting
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 8:18:43 PM #
Let me get this straight. Palm should stop marketing their products because you think some other handheld has a better product.
Think about that statement.

I said Palm has to stop marketing SUB-PAR PRODUCTS. I like Palm, don't get me wrong, but putting out devices that are of less quality worries me.

Another thing-
From before, about the target market for most Palm handhelds being the less-informed consumer, the i705 ties into this. It is too much of a mixture of both. You have the wireless internet and the personal and corporate email accounts (executives being the target audience for these features) but you also have the 8mb of memory and the monochrome screen making this a low end machine more suitable for not-so-professional users. That's what I mean by sub-par. It is low end for the target market yet it seems to be a super machine for the non-professional users that is too expensive for them.
