Comments on: AvantGo Offering Extra Channel Capacity

AvantGo is offering hardcore users of its service the ability to buy extra channel capacity. Currently, users are limited to 2 MB of channels but AvantGo will now allow people who want more to have 8 MB for an annual fee of $20, though it currently has a special introductory price of $15. It should be emphasized that the service is still free for those who are happy with just 2 MB.

Good Deal

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 10:15:23 AM #
Whether or not you agree with some decisions made by AvantGo, you have to give them credit for the information services that they provide a conduit for.

I for one had NO problem putting down the $15 (limited time price) for this extra amount of service. With the money I save by not purchasing magazines and such.. it's a drop in the bucket.

No matter what I feel like reading on any particular day, it will be available and I won't have to make choices due to limited channel availability..

Definately a happy camper :-)

Agreed,

finally AvantGo is making it possible for me to give some money to them. As strange as it sounds: now that AvantGo is struggeling I find it better to shell out 15 bucks a year than seeing the service disapear one day. This solution is pretty clever cause they are keeping their customer base and still will be making some money.

I love avantgo. I use it every day. I can't remember the last time I bought myself a newspaper during my morning commute into work. I would not have a problem paying for the service for more space. Like the first guy said, you are already saving money by not puchasing magazines and such...

now Vindigo, on the other hand, i wouldnt pay for the service. $25 for a walking yellowpages just doesnt seem to be worth getting... and since their resturant listing is no longer provided by Zagat...

just my 2.5 cents

RE: Good Deal
He||Raiser @ 8/15/2002 9:47:56 PM #
I feel the same way about Vindigo. It's nice to have movie listings and restaurant addresses, but since they stopped providing reviews by Zagat, Vindigo has become a much more limited program for me.

Um how about VFS support? Even if you have 16MB, are you seriously going to devote half your RAM to avantgo? THis is THE most important feature they need to implement yesterday.
RE: I know how to use the money ...
Phil @ 8/15/2002 11:13:12 AM #
Right, thatīs one really important thing I forgot.

Take a look at Handstory - They can do it - why canīt AvantGo.

We love the service and will gladly pay for the extra content. Can you please release a hi-res+ version? Auto scrolling and memory card support would be priceless. Dropping the ads would be great too for paying subscribers. They get distorted anyway.

Another thing: please allow the power users (who paid the fee) to put up custom channels like http://www.geek.com/pdageek/portable again.

Phil

Be nice, everybody!

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 10:59:51 AM #
I'll pay the $15.00 even though I only use 1.25mb or so of channels. I may not use a TON of channels, but the ones I do use are worth much more than $1.25 a month.

Power users and casual users alike should help AvantGo get through their financial troubles ;-)

RE: Be nice, everybody!
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 11:09:19 AM #
I'm going to do the same. I find the service to be well worth $15/year, even though I don't use 8MB of channels. I just want to make sure the service doesn't go away.

NO ADS

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 11:08:16 AM #
I'd plan on paying the fee, but it'd be cool if registered "extra capacity users" didn't have those annoying ads and occasional surveys on the front page.

(realistically, they are no big deal.... but it'd be a nice gesture)

RE: NO ADS
wm5051 @ 8/15/2002 12:24:55 PM #
I dont think we should expect to see the ads disappear anytime soon. If you look at their finaiacial statements they receive too much revenue from the ads. In my opinion it is small price to pay for such great content, and they are pretty easy to get through.

AvantGo Professional

Phil @ 8/15/2002 10:54:23 AM #
Hey AvantGo,

why donīt you offer a free palm client without the online browser feature and a professional version with build in online browser, high resolution, more channel capacity and maybe some more features (just like Plam Digital Media / Peanutpress does with the Palmreader).?

Youīll make a lot of money, believe me.

Phil

PS: Sorry for the three million postings - but Iīm really interested in AvantGoīs future.

From my point of view a professional version of avantgo would make a lot of sense.

MS - External Cards

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 11:24:46 AM #
I love Avantgo and use it everyday. Unfortunitly I only have 1m available (Clie 760). Can I store information on my MS. Also, does anybody know if I can use the jog wheel. I can use it to scroll but I can't use it to select from the menu. Thanks
RE: MS - External Cards
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 11:34:42 AM #
Try iSilo. It can sync directly to a Card and doesn't have any size limitations.

I have problems with that company. I tried out his Dr. Mario clone when it came out, and emailed him about a bug I found (Combos aren't possible, they sit there until another is added.) and he yelled at me in the mail saying it works fine and it's intended that way. I find it disappointing when software developers only cater to their needs and then give up on it.

Why not try Plucker?

orb2069 @ 8/15/2002 11:34:32 AM #
A lot more configurable, wider choice of content, and you can filter that content a billion ways.

It's harder to set up, but you've only got to set it up once. :)

The only thing that AG's got over them (That I can see) are two-way conduits.

RE: Why not try Plucker?
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 12:39:06 PM #
I have Isilo and have tried Plucker. But even with the faster response on the handheld and the no limits on size, I keep coming back to Avantgo.reasons.

First, my local newspaper, Sac Bee, is only available on Avantgo, as is Cnet News.

Also, I like to update my news without using a computer. I often use Avantgo's modem sync feature with my Cell phone or landline modem.

Let me get all the sites I want and have a modem sync and I'd switch right away.

Mac OS X

macfixer @ 8/15/2002 12:39:38 PM #
I am sending them no money until they come out with a OS X conduit.

p.s.: storing my channels on my 64 MB MMC would be cool, too.

RE: Mac OS X
james_sorenson @ 8/15/2002 12:55:46 PM #
Until then, I highly recommend iSilo (http://www.isilo.com). Very easy to configure and doesn't rely on another company's server.

I hear Plucker is nice if you are willing to take some time setting it up and want something for free.

I used to love Avantgo, but their server would be down too often, the browse took way too much space, and the options are too limited. I don't really miss them anymore.

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 8:11:26 PM #
I second that! Not one dime until an OSX conduit is available. They haven't even made an attempt at this and OSX has been out for well over a year. AvantGo, get a clue! Apple may be a smaller marketshare than Windows, but Mac users are extremely vocal and short-tempered ;-)

Also, what's with the "NO HI RES" stance. Jeez guys, this has been available for over a year as well and another whiff on the part of AvantGo. Very lame. Everything will be hi-res pretty soon... what will you do then, AvantGo? Argue the merits of 160x160 pixelated, dull images ;-)

Good luck! You're gonna need it!

RE: Mac OS X
scottmag @ 8/16/2002 1:30:27 PM #
Speak up somewhere other than here if you want OS X support - let them know directly. Based on what they say in their FAQ about OS X support, that they are waiting for help from Apple and Palm and do not know "if/when" they will provide the support, I don't believe they are even trying. Here's what I told them:

"I would like to inform you that I am a long-time user of AvantGo and consider it one of the best reasons to own a PDA. Now that I use Mac OS X on all my computers I am unfortunately unable to use your service. As disappointing as that is, your FAQ entry addressing it is more so. Saying that you are unable to develop a conduit and are waiting for help from Apple and Palm is unbelievable. And your statement that you "hope to support this platform in the future but do not know for sure if/when we will" leads one to believe that you have no further intention of working on the problem. Thousands of developers large and small are releasing applications for OS X and surely they do not all wait for help from Apple. Nor do I suspect you would simply quit working on the product if you had a problem with Windows XP.

I am ready to pay for your extra capacity service the minute you release a working conduit for Mac OS X. I hope that that occurs soon."

Where to sign up?

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/15/2002 12:42:07 PM #
Has anyone found a URL on the AvantGo site where you can sign up for $15?

I wasn't able to, and am suspecting that they haven't yet set their website up for taking orders.

Just signed up

I've used and enjoyed AvantGo for free since its inception and I'm happy to support them. Amortized, this comes to roughly $4/year and the service is more than worth that.

A very clever move on their part to allow fans to contribute without alienating the general user base. Hope enough people sign up to keep them afloat.

Finally...

Kwed @ 8/15/2002 6:30:20 PM #
About time AvantGo starts charging end-users. Now all they need to do is to stop bleeding the hobbyist content providers and give these people the possibility to create free, unlimited-subscriber custom channels.

Back in the day, I was looking into developing an AvantGo version of my personal site. We're talking no-budget one-guy out-of-his-basement stuff, so naturally I couldn't pay the prices they were asking. Hence the project was scrapped. Since then I have talked to other hobbyists who suffered the same fate.

Give the users a chance to add valuable content. The more varied content AvantGo has, the more subscribers will flock to it - hopefully paying those $20 per year to support the service. There's more to AvantGo than megabucks companies rolling out PDA-friendly versions of their corporate websites.

AvantGo Way To Go!

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/16/2002 12:10:35 AM #
I rode on this freebie for a long time and it is probably one of the few web-services that I will pay for. The moment I saw the paid services ad I signed up.

Yeah, they probably should upgrade their client - like clipping articles or selected text for saving, Hi-Res, etc.

I have tried Handstory, Plucker, iSilo and all of them are not as easy to use as AvantGo and I hope they stay in business and that's why I signed up.

Their earlier silly plan to limit channels was dumb but this is one so far is smart. $14.95/19.95 per year is not too much to pay.

With version 4.0 and higher you can save text for viewing later. While in an article, click on the Palm menu button and choose edit and choose copy. This will save the article to your memo pad for future reading.

The guy (or girl) with the m515:

Sorry, I think you got something wrong. Your m515 does not have a high resolution screen. Only devices by Sony or Handera do.
