Screen?!

mikecane @ 4/29/2003 11:41:19 AM #
"The Legend Palm 168 has a 3.5 inch, 320 X 240 pixel screen that can display over 65,000 colors. It has a "virtual graffiti" area which can be hidden to allow full screen photos and ebooks."

Is that description correct?! Something does not sound right about that 320x240 part, especially with a hideaway Graffiti area. But it is too early in the AM for my mind to work with numbers...

Otherwise, this looks interesting. Too bad Legend's site is so slooooow to work. Got SARS?

It's actually 240x320, I updated the article.

Same resolution as the Handera .... hmmm, could THIS have been the elusive Handera 330 replacment??

"Same resolution as the Handera .... hmmm, could THIS have been the elusive Handera 330 replacment??"

I doubt it. It's not nearly ugly enough to be produced by Handera...

If this was for sale right now in the U.S. and priced between $200 and $300, i'd snap one up in a heartbeat. It'd be the next best thing to a color Handera 330 and is (IMHO) quit a bit more stylish. Even the buttons look decent-though I would prefer the Zire 71's mini joystick thingie.

I think that there is a profitable niche of the "upper low end" of the market for handhelds running OS 4.x and utilizing the 66mhz Dragonball that has not been fully tapped yet. Imagine if Palm were to release something with specs like this in the m500 formfactor and price it at $200ish. Wow! A lot of folks have no problems buying a new unit that runs a previous generation OS and CPU if for no other reason than to handle legacy programs that have not been updated to be compliant with newer OS's and processors.

Actually, much of Chinese software, so I hear it, is optimized for a 240x320 resolution. 160x160 isn't enough to display the Chinese characters, and they may not have wanted to go as expensive as 320x480.

Legend is going to be a Chinese-only OEM, so it's definitely not a replacement to the HandEra. At least HandEra would've gone with HVGA to keep up with the times instead of QVGA like Legend.

At 240x320, do they have "automatic" scaling (from 160x160->240x240) like Handera does?

ganoe @ 4/30/2003 3:36:28 PM #

> 160x160->240x240) like Handera does?

Assuming it is using the now-standard Palm OS methods, the short answer should be yes.

The long answer is that there might be some slight differences in the displayed result because the implementation/APIs are slightly different. Just from what I've read and heard, there are differences in the way they defaulted handling off screen bitmaps (and there's probably some other minor differences other than just the API). Such that legacy apps looked better on the 330, but caused a few apps to not work (in contrast to the Palm OS method where those few apps would be compatible but more apps would look worse than on the 330). Hard to know without comparing.

Battery status

Not a bad looking device, but it always amazes me that so many promotional photos show the battery gauge low, or as in this, case dying...

Someone help me out here. How is 320 X 240 big enough to have a virutal grafitti area?
I thought standard was 320 X 320 & virtual needed 320 X 480.
I so want a 320 X 480 with virtual grafitti in a non clam shell style.
& that tungsten c with wifi makes me want wifi.
hopefully sony comes out with both
maybe i just want too much & should just buy a small laptop :)

"Someone help me out here. How is 320 X 240 big enough to have a virutal grafitti area?
I thought standard was 320 X 320 & virtual needed 320 X 480."

Apps are displayed in a 240x240 square area, with the graffiti area in the lower 80x240 portion of the 240x320. Depending on the API used, apps aware of how to use the graffiti area can use the full 240x320 area when the graffiti area is minimized.

Generally bitmaps are either scaled 1.5x from their 160x160 versions to the 240x240 size, or an alternate set of bitmaps made for 240x240 are selected (either by the app or the OS, depending on the API their screen uses).

Likely the form objects are automatically redrawn to the 240x240 size.

PalmOS allows many screen resolutions. 240x320 first arrived on PalmOS 2 years ago via the HandEra 330, however there are other non-320x480 variants on PalmOS as well, with varying degrees of 3rd party app support.

160x192, 160x240, 176x240, 560x160

Back to the "battery status" thing... ;-)

Thanks for the info. I have an old steam powered (I'm kidding!, I know it's not steam powered... it uses gerbils) Palm IIIxe, which is obviously not provided with rechargable batteries.

The only time I have ever seen that "battery/lightning bolt" icon on my machine is now and then when I place it in my Rand McNally GPS sled which lives in the car.

Sometimes (maybe 1 in 30) I get that icon. I remove the palm and replace it in the sled and all is well. As there is no connection from the +V in pin on the IIIxe to the batteries I didn't consider that this was the "charging" icon. I assumed that it was telling me to change the batteries NOW, because there was a short or something.

Now I know. Thanks for the info!

Any chance this product will make it to America's shores? I SOOOOO want one.

Looks like it combines the best of Pocket PC and PalmOS together in one device.

Scratch that. I didn't read closely enough. It runs on OS4.1/66mhz SuperVZ. Blech! No thanks.

Yup.

With Bluetooth and preferable a 320x480 Screen (and possibly the Zire71 5-way stick), then add me to the distro list as well.

Every new PDA is closer to the "perfect" PDA, which differs from user to user. Some weird combo of the Tungsten T, Zire 71, and Garmin device makes for my perfect PDA.

I say the T|T D-pad (T|T size, not T|W or T|C) instead of the Zire 71's mini-joystick... but that's just my take.

168 = A path to wealth

HandyMan @ 4/29/2003 4:13:02 PM #
Anybody who's familar with the Chinese (mostly Cantonese speakers anyways) obsessions over numbers.

It's interesting that Palm chose 168 as the model number. It's obvious they did some homework. It's not so much superstition -- as some people believe -- but it's more of "it sounds good" thing.

RE: 168 = A path to wealth
Pepper @ 4/29/2003 5:10:14 PM #
Wow, you're right. i hadn't thought about it but 168 does sound very nice. I dont speak cantonese, but mandrin is relatively similar. really do like the sound of the number.

For those who don't speak chinese, the pinyin is bai liu ba. or, the way most americans phonetically say things its more similar to by leo bah.

Good name choice, although i must admit im not fond of using numbers at all. (thus imo, tungsten c sounds color than zire 71. no number naming nonsense)

Anyhew, in terms of # choice, 168 is a good one for the chinese market

To Pepper

Since we are talking about mandrin, how the heck can you say 168 as "bai liu ba" ??

168 should be something like YI LU BA.

It looks ugly and bulky to me.

Come on! US$338 to buy a PDA with only Motorola SuperVZ 66MHz and the obsolete Palm OS 4.X. and no bluetooth built-in. Who's gonna buy it?
I would rather spend US$399 to get a TT. and the design and style dosn't look attractive to me. I guess this is only a pilot model for Legend Group, otherwise, you can hardly see it in a bunch of new released PDAs.

RE: It looks ugly and bulky to me.
abosco @ 4/29/2003 10:04:34 PM #
Did you read the article? It's for China, not the US.

And this PDA should be about the size as the Sony N760c, the PDA it looks exactly like.

That price -- in american dollars -- is pathetic. Exactly as the first member mentioned, there are better more powerful and with more utility than this one for just a TAD more... LAME

Current PDA: Palm Tungsten|T
First PDA: PEG-NR70V

Comments: Great form factor, but for not much more I could have an NX with value-added features out the WAZOO.... damn cumbersome layout!

RE: It looks ugly and bulky to me.
hotpaw4 @ 4/30/2003 3:23:00 PM #
The 0.5" dimension makes the 168 one of the thinnest color models running PalmOS. That must be why the price is so high for an OS 4.x model. Is the battery life mentioned anywhere?
