Updated model on the way?

Schu @ 7/8/2003 7:54:14 PM #
Seems too soon, but I hope this means an updated model is coming. I know this model was meant for the enterprise market, but not including a built in microphone for the voice recorder was just plain stupid. Also a mono headphone jack? Adding those two things would cost what? 50 cents?

I tried some headphone from a cellphone I had and it repeatedly crashed the built in app whenever I tried to play something I recorded.

"Adding those two things would cost what? 50 cents?"

Assuming 50 cents, not adding them saved the company $500 for every 1,000 units sold. And I guarentee you it's more then 50 cents.

Palm is smart. They save a bunch of money doing things like this because they know people will still but their product.

The T|C with VG instead of the keyboard and a stereo headphone output would be perfection. am i wrong?

RE: Updated model on the way?
Palm Cow @ 7/8/2003 11:27:15 PM #
Although I personally would love that and consider it perfect, many wouldn't. The T|C (I think) is for IMing when you're in a WiFi network and composing emails, and the thumb-board is really good for that. I think it'd be best marketing the T|C and the T|Cm (for multimedia) with all hte bells and whistles (built-in voice recorder, VG 320*480, stereo output, etc.) for like $50 more. But that won't happen. They're just lowering the T|C price to sell it better and more sales means more profite (usually).

I personally think that if anyone on these boards actually used the thumbboards on these devices instead of whining about Virtual Graffiti, they'd put their respective feet in their respective mouths.... tapping an SMS/E-mail/IM is much, much faster and easier on the wrist than writing it.

Just go into a store and really try them... Virtual Graffiti is nice for screen real estate for programs, but for writing? I think not.

That's right, Davy, you think NOT. Just because YOU spit out SMSes, doesn't mean the rest of us want to do that (especially me, since I *loathe* all IMing and cellphones!). SG suits me just fine. *You* can't write paragraphs of text in Graffiti? Too bad for you, bub. *I* can. Keep your keyboard. Have fun with it. Give me SG!

I'd love to meet you and have a text-off sometimes... I'd put some pretty heavy money on the table that I could type 1,000 words on a keypad faster than you could write it... and then I'd dust you in arm wrestling because your wrist would be dead.... THAT'S what I think!

Just because it's easier for you and you like it better than Graffiti doesn't mean that is true for everyone. I hate to shock you with the newsflash but not everyone is like you. I have been using Graffiti for years and am very fast at it and much prefer it to any kinf of silly little thumboard.

noodle @ 7/12/2003 9:38:32 PM #
i just hoped that T|C bit lighter. oh the chunkeyness and weight. i mean pda is designed to carry everyday. I want them to be lighter. Like m515s.(I still luv my 515. =) ) and for the thumboard, every pda has to have thumboard!! lol. that's just me though, it rules. hella faster and easier to use then graffiti. thumboard hands down. but someppl would find hard to use them at the first spot.

New T|C price close to T2?

gfunkmagic @ 7/8/2003 11:41:24 PM #
According to the rumors, the T2 will supposedly be priced at about $400 USD upon release. That's awefully close to the new reduced price of the T|C isn't it? IMO, there's no way PSG would price these models so close to each other. If they're gonna reduce the T|C to ~$430 bucks, then the T2 should be around ~$350! Perhaps these price cuts are pre-emptive moves against all the new PPC2003 devices?

hmmmm. nice insight. if they phase out the TT then the T2 should be just around $349 if they do not change the processor (just ram and screen).

and if you think about it...doesnt palm love releasing new stuff in pairs? maybe the T2 is coming out with the zire 71 LE.

what do you guys think?

RE: New T|C price close to T2?
Scott R @ 7/9/2003 11:43:17 AM #
Well, Palm is in a bit of a pickle with the TT-series, IMO. On the one hand, it's smaller, made out of metal, and features a stereo headphone jack and microphone, all of which could make it worth _more_ than a T|C. It doesn't have Wi-Fi, but it does have Bluetooth. The T|C clearly has the better screen, faster processor, and more memory, but it looks like the T|T2 will even some of those things out. So, which one really is worth more? It's not completely cut and dry, IMO.

RE: New T|C price close to T2?
Altema @ 7/9/2003 4:59:53 PM #
Yeah, I agonized over which one to get... it was a difficult choice for me. I really like the T|T, but sometimes wish I had the T|C. Only thing I would change on the T|T is more RAM, more ROM, and a little better battery life. Once you get accustomed to the device, everything else about it seem just right. I did get my very first low battery warning at work last night, after a grueling 13 hour workday. Spent the last two hours plugged into a Cisco 5505 console port which keeps the Palm serial port open. Big battery drain, but only enough drag it down to 20%. It recovered to 32% after disconnecting, but I charged it anyways because I had no idea how much longer I'd be there. Still, it's the first time I have had to charge it at work.

If the pricing is right on the new T|T, I'll have to make a decision between going to the T|T2 or upgrading the RAM/ROM on my existing device which has proven itself well. Downside to the T|T2 is Graffiti2, while the downside to upgrading the T|T is decreasing the battery life further.

Serial Connection to Cisco Console
Philthy @ 7/23/2003 10:33:11 AM #
Concerning one of the posts from Paul. I have been trying to use the Serial Hotsync cable to get a console connection to my Cisco switches and routers, but have had no luck. Is there a special cable I should be using or purchasing? Apparently someone has gotten it to work.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is it just me or...

Should the T/C be re-named the T/W for Wireless or WiFi
AND
The T/W be re-named the T/C for Cellular phone.

Seems logical to me!

More Better Deal on Tungsten C

rav @ 7/9/2003 10:59:38 AM #
Amazon's not only is selling the Palm Tungsten C for $430(with free shipping)... They're also offering a $50 amazon.com gift certificate with purchase. Then, there's the Palm $50 rebate if you send them your old PDA. Final price - $330 ! FYI.

HanSolo @ 7/9/2003 3:21:06 PM #
Rav - great tip. I think i'm going to take the plunge and order a T/C from Amazon - $330 is a killer deal! I have a old palm III laying around that I can send in for the $50 rebate. I don't really care about the no stereo audio feature because that's what my iPod is for!

Whoa! For some reason, when you go to the detail page for that Tungsten T, it only shows one priced at $229.99. That's misleading advertising.

It's probably a typo. Give Overstock a call and they will most likely give you the lower price. I've ordered three times from them and they stand behind what they sell.

The two Palms I purchased for the kids were like new, with the exception of the little plastic window in the flip cover was missing on the M130. A quick call and they offered to exchange the handheld or give me a credit for the flip cover. No complaints here.
