Comments on: Two New webOS Apps Added to the Catalog

It's been awhile between drinks when it comes to Pre apps, with the last App Catalog update coming over a month ago on June 11, leaving Pre owners nought to do but stare hungrily through the windows of competing app stores like ragged street urchins trapped in a perpetual Dickensian nightmare.

Today, though, Palm has finally seen fit to toss us some scraps from their no doubt app-laden table: they've announced via their blog that two new apps are now ready for download from the App Catalog. Read on for the details.

OT: i don't sync anymore

Gekko @ 7/29/2009 7:35:07 AM # Q

1. Contacts and Calendar - just use on the Centro with Backup via two rotating microSD cards and BackupBuddyVFS. no need for a Desktop App in the age of email connected devices. i just add contacts and calendar events on the Device. copy and paste signatures from emails as needed.

2. Memos - converted all to MS Word Docs.

3. Excel/Word "DocsToGo" files - i simply FTP them to my free secure ISP storage via Filezilla. i then access them over FTP via WifFile Pro on my Centro. if i lose my device, i simply change my FTP password. no files to constantly sync and no files to worry about being on the device if i lose it. they reside in the Cloud via FTP.

4. Email - use Gmail IMAP with Centro's free included Versamail. sync daily every hour.

it's a beautiful thing.

It is, isn't it? Too bad Palm doesn't agree with you (the simplicity & flexibility of FrankenGarnet + a microSD slot)!
Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->Zodiac 2->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon Treo 755p->?

As much as I look down my nose at those who worship at his feet, I sincerely believe the Zen of Palm walked out the door with Jeff Hawkins.

I agree with the other comments regarding the SD slot. That was a disappointment with the Pre. On the other hand, the Centro (IIRC) could only see 4GB on a card anyway, so with the Pre's 8GB storage (although that's small by iPhone standards) that still leaves the Pre ahead of the game, as far as I can tell.

And I think that the way the Pre syncs is much more seamless than the procedure you're describing here. Of course, for it to equal the Centro's abilities with documents, DataViz has to release Docs To Go for the Pre.

I miss some of the apps on my Centro, but the syncing, auto-backup, better keyboard, and better UI experience make up for that, IMHO.

All I'm really dying for them to add is robust copy/paste.

Since we are already off topic (but speaking about SD slots)......

Ok, now here's a device that is looking really close to what I want: http://www.zii.com/Developer/Landing.aspx
Hey, look at that. 32gb built in and an SDHC slot. Looks like someone understands people actually want the option for more memory.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

I'd like nothing more than to see an upstart, hungry Asian firm (Creative or anyone else) come out with a fully-fleshed out version of that Zii Egg and give those pompous pricks at Apple AND Palm AND RIM AND HTC a run for their money. Not to mention a solid kick to the gonads of the greedy carriers as well.

Start with the Zii Egg's basic specs, throw in wi-fi/wi-max support, Bluetooth, solid VOIP functionality, the usual app store/Amazon MP3 music store integration and, for good measure, *DRUM ROLL*....the classic Palm OS PIM apps licensed from Access, all riding atop Android (or at least the option of putting Android on the device).

Sell that sucker for $400ish with no strings attached and send out a generous allotment of demo/dev units to the blogosphere. Boom! The sleeper hit of the year has just been born!

Well, yes, I know it alread has wi-fi & BT but I wanted to reinforce my claim that neither of those should be removed in favor of wi-max etc.

Other than the aggravating proprietary mini-USB connector (why not just the standardized micro USB?) and possibly wanting a higher capacity battery and perhaps a higher-resolution and/or larger screen, those are PERFECT specs!
Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->Zodiac 2->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon Treo 755p->?

Yeah, it's hard to believe how something so easy was so "impossible" for Palm.
Unfortunately, perfect specs doesn't mean this will sell at all. There's a whole lot more involved. But I do very much like what I'm seeing, and I think this all continues to bode well for Android. Android is attracting a lot of attention, and a whole lot of companies are working hard to come out with Android devices before the end of 2009.

Microsoft Admits Its Phones Are Crappy, Vows To Improve (MSFT)
Dan Frommer|Jul. 30, 2009, 5:10 PM

No more blind cheerleading from Redmond: Microsoft (MSFT) finally admitted that its mobile business needs some work.

At Microsoft's analyst day in Seattle, Robbie Bach confessed in his finest business school jargon that the company hasn't "done as good a job as I would like building relationships and getting the right integration with our hardware partners," according to the WSJ, and vowed to improve: "You're going to see dramatic improvement in integration."

He added, "You'll see our execution rhythm pick up and the quality of our execution improve."

Get real MS. Your products are generally crap. You deny it for as long as possible, and then after you finally have to admit it's crap, you "vow" that the next time will be a vast improvement, making your product better than anything else out there. It's classic MS BS. Why would anyone in their right mind believe any of your crap? It's just laughable.

RE: OT: i don't sync anymore
freakout @ 8/1/2009 7:05:19 PM # Q
Going even further OT: If MS wants a successful phone line, I reckon they should make an Xbox phone for the following reasons off the top of my head:

*The Xbox & gaming is one of the only places where their brand actually stands for innovation and quality (notwithstanding the RROD disaster)

*They have a huge advantage with the Xbox Live infrastructure for OTA delivery of new software and services

*They have (mostly) excellent relations with developers

*Nobody has ever done this properly. Nokia's N-Gage was poorly designed and was neither a good phone nor a good game machine. The iPhone comes close but will always be inherently unsuitable for certain genres due to the lack of physical controls. There's still big opportunities waiting for the right hardware to come along.

Other than continually bashing it, have you ever used the iphone to play games Freak?

RE: OT: i don't sync anymore
nastebu @ 8/2/2009 3:28:07 AM # Q
As much as I'm uncomfortable agreeing with Freak, it is perfectly true that the iPhone's use as a gaming platform is limited by the touch screen.

It's possible that Apple will help out by making it possible to use game controllers with the phone, but there's no evidence that they will. Apple seems to see the iPhone as a phone first, and all else second.

Maybe the rumored Apple tablet?

RE: boring
freakout @ 7/30/2009 5:02:38 PM # Q
^^ Tell me about it. Especially when you consider Precentral is hosting nearly 100 homebrew apps already. How many must Palm have in front of them by now?

Guess they're waiting for the App Catalog to be finalised.

RE: boring
jca666us @ 7/30/2009 7:36:21 PM # Q
lol @freak - instead of two boring apps. in the App Catalog, PreCentral has nearly a hundred shitty apps.

Weren't you the guy who said the Pre could do high quality games with javascript? :)

I must say - PrePong and PreHangman look amazing! The graphics processor in the Pre is really being fully utilized!

Maybe after they get Tamara Hope out of detox, they can make a new Palm Pre commercial - "Palm Pre; just like the iphone - except our apps suck!" :)

RE: boring
freakout @ 7/31/2009 1:01:05 AM # Q
With the right APIs and plugins, you can make pretty much anything in Javascript + HTML5. That you continue to mock this serves only to demonstrate the jaw-dropping depths of your ignorance.

Won't you please piss off already? You are a waste of bandwidth. Not to mention oxygen.

RE: boring
jca666us @ 7/31/2009 4:29:11 AM # Q
Now you mention API's an Plugin's - when are these being released for the Pre?

I don't mock this possibility - I mock your stupid statement regarding this.

I'll "piss off" - in your face.

RE: boring
SeldomVisitor @ 7/31/2009 5:48:49 AM # Q
Palm is attempting to hire people right now to develop those APIs for games so game developers can then start writing games - not necessarily for the Pre, of course, due to expected lifetimes, etc etc etc, but instead for WebOS.

RE: boring
freakout @ 7/31/2009 7:39:42 AM # Q
I mock your stupid statement regarding this.

This "statement". How 'bout you link it? 'Cause I don't remember ever saying that webOS in its current state is going to make a great gaming platform. The stuff you make up in your head doesn't actually count in reality.

And for the love of God, please get over this bizarre personal obsession with me. It bores the living shit outta me and I can only imagine what it does to the rest of the PIC readership. Nobody cares.

Exsqueeeze me!

Vaporware is as the definition that I've posted more than once. When it ceases to be vaporware one moves on. I have, you haven't. That says it all.

[note pointedly however, that most of what Palm touted for the Pre as far as software is concerned REMAINS vaporware - or certainly vaporware-ish - when software is sufficiently beta in form - or nonexistent - I personally think it still qualifies for the "vaporware" label]

And j-etc, the reason he doesn't find his own quote is probably due to the totally-broken Search of this site; he (and you? And me.) haven't got a clue how to search for such a thing without getting 5000 bad hits FIRST.

Hiring graphical engineers - means support is not coming next week. Maybe within 6 months - maybe a year from now.

Will the Pre be supported?? Too early to tell...

>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canvas_(HTML_element) (Pre already has
>"limited" canvas support.)

Only "limited"??? As per Wikipedia:

It was initially introduced by *Apple*

Considering Palm rips off a lot of Apple's work, I'm surprised the Pre doesn't have a full implementation of canvas :)

>http://code.google.com/apis/o3d/ (I'm not saying this will appear on the Pre.
>It's merely a demonstration of the capabilities of HTML5.)

LMMFAO!!! Keep grasping at straws freak - it's a demonstration of the fantasies at play in your mind.

How does O3D tie into HTML5 and demonstrate the capabilities of HTML5?!?!?

It doesn't - actually read the information about O3D (instead of being mesmerized by the pretty pictures) - it uses a plug-in.

It's an extension to *Javascript* - with a plug-in that ties into a GPU to provide support for optimized 3d graphics.

Available for the Mac and Windows BTW - no mention of any mobile platform support.

>What, you think the fact that they're not available yet gives you some kind
>of argument-winning trump card?

No; I think you're misrepresenting what canvas and these other technologies can (and cannot) do - rather than admitting to actual deficiencies in the Pre and webos.

You pulled O3D out of your ass to prove nothing - except redirect from your initial flawed statement.

The flash plugin isn't available (yet) - even in beta state. No one has any idea what this plugin will support, how it will perform, or the drain on battery life.

Let's wait and see how that turns out before proclaiming it the savior for the Pre's lacking 3rd party app. situation.

>Fine, you're welcome to that delusion.

Freak, you need intensive psychotherapy and medication. It's OK to admit when you're wrong...LOL!

>You can go join SV in the corner, where I believe he's still calling the Pre
>vaporware.

Hey, I'm not calling the Pre vaporware, but you've made ignorant statements about O3D (among other things) so I have no problem calling you out.

BTW, SV has made several well thought out posts - instead of bashing - listen to what people have to say.
