Comments on: Open Thread: What Are Your Pre Launch Plans?

Palm Pre lines and launch plansDiscussion: With Saturday approaching quickly, and some lines already beginning to form, I've setup an open thread here for everyone to discuss their respective game-plan for scoring a Pre this weekend.

So what's your strategy? Camping out a Sprint Store Friday night? paying a surrogate to stand in line, scoping out a Best Buy or Walmart, holding a seance at an old Palm Airport outlet, skipping it until the crowds die down or just waiting for online orders to begin?

My plans...

freakout @ 6/1/2009 4:09:42 PM # Q
...involve watching jealously over the Internet, wishing fervently the US was a GSM country like the rest of the goddamn world so I could get myself an unlocked model.

Oh well. can't be too much longer.

Except for Sprint (...) it looks like the US is skipping the Total Transition to GSM entirely and moving straight to LTE.

I'll save 2.5G thank you

I don't really care to have a Pre at all. Garnet works just fine and has available the best PIMs known to man.

What I really want is Lefty to get the new ALPOS out and on a phone. Garnet could use a freshening up That's really the only way we're going to see a new Palm.

Garnet works just fine...

Unless you want 3G GSM and a quality web browser - in which case Garnet has been sorely lacking for years now.

But hey, that's a pretty short list you have there.

Yep, it's amazing how well "good ol' Garnet" stacks up still.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

freakout @ 6/2/2009 4:55:47 AM # Q
True. But there's other cool stuff in the Pre / webOS too: multitouch, Synergy, GPS integration, Bluetooth 2, Wifi, a 3.5mm jack, a supercharged processor... it's almost enough to make you forget that missing SD slot. ;)

Oh, and no D-pad. I'm really going to miss that. Especially for games.

Did you see the post about Access trying to gauge interest in GarnetOS maybe even revive interest in it?

I didn't see that but I'd love to see it happen. I'm only 1 squeaky wheel though.

Same here. Pre doesn't excite me. ALPOS (or maybe Dimitry's OS?) on my TX would be great, though.

There were a few people who posted on there. But that was not the primary notification. Hate to use a cliche, but, every vote counts (e-mail in this case).
I've been dropped off all the dev mailing lists, so I do not know if there ever was a follow up.

pre?

I think I'll take an iPhone. After all, for better or worse, it's the only smartphone that will truly integrate with my Mac.

I'm going to wait...

alanh @ 6/1/2009 6:19:19 PM # Q
I'm going to wait for a few reviews and see if there's a way I can integrate with my university's IT. Then I might see if Sprint's service is better than it's reputation.

I'm hesitant to move as I'd also have to move my elderly parents' phones....

Verizon steals the sprint thunder by anouncing they'll have the Pre on their superior network

I wish I could got get in line, but I have to small children.
We do have several Sprint stores around use and quite a few BestBuys, so maybe I'll get lucky. =)

Personal Take

Ryan @ 6/1/2009 8:02:59 PM # Q
Personally, as I do nearly all of my tech shopping online, I'd much rather prefer to order one up on the web.

I find it curious that the full launch stock is being reserved for retail, but that's where it will make the biggest splash I suppose. So I'd elect to wait for this one to show up on Amazon before pitching a tent.

Hoping for another glimpse of that Android PDA

JonAcheson @ 6/2/2009 7:34:06 AM # Q
I'm hoping that that Android PDA that GiiNii is working on will show up at E3, as Palm has already abandoned me as a customer, and that device might well be my future upgrade path.

I'm getting an iPod touch because I want a PDA, not a phone. Back to School promotion, here I come.

The iPod Touch would maybe work, too, but I hate the proprietariness of it.

choices choices....

whiteasianrose @ 6/2/2009 7:39:18 AM # Q
well if i can get it from best buy, that's where ill get it from since i have a rewards card with them. if not, then radio shack will be my next stop (already gotten on lists at several stores).

hopefully radio shack will have the touchstone available as well cause im gonna be trading in three old palm phones for store credit through their old phone program (centro, 650 and 700wx)...should be able to get close to half the amount of the touchstone.

around midnight i'm heading out to check out best buy to see if there are lines. if so, get in line, if not, check back sporadically. thank God NYC is a 24/7 city! i'll probably be nice and drunk by the time the store opens

oh yeah, hearing radio shacks are gonna have about 5 each as well (similar to best buy)

Wait and See

swieder @ 6/2/2009 7:40:35 AM # Q
I will wait until the initial reports come in from the 1st wave of Pre users. I really want GSM, but might consider Sprint if the feedback is overwhelmingly positive.

try to get one on day 1

alexei2001 @ 6/2/2009 9:00:05 AM # Q
I'm switching from Verizon Wireless to Sprint for this phone. I have an old treo 650. It's time for an upgrade, and this is a heck of an upgrade. And the Sprint is cheaper than Verizon Wireless.
So I'll probably hit a few Sprint stores until I get one on Saturday.

No Tethering = No Pre for Me

puk @ 6/2/2009 9:09:54 AM # Q
My plans? As a customer who had a Treo 300 two days before lunch (hooray for untrained store employees) and has had a 650, 700p, and 755p since: I'm not buying one yet.

I saw it at CES. Overall, I love it. The emulator at least partially addresses my fear that people won't port more unixy apps like an ssh client to a non-C-based dev environment. _But_ until there's a tethering solution, I just can't make myself buy a device which has significant handicaps when compared to every other device I've owned for the last 7 years.

double-camp

ackthbbft @ 6/2/2009 11:41:47 AM # Q
I'm anticipating my local Sprint Store (a *real* one, mind you, not one of those "partners", which I'm not sure I trust having the device on launch day) opening at 8am on Saturday, so I will be there bright and early (or perhaps dark and early, depending on how early).

Best part is, there is a Best Buy in the same shopping center, so I can make my GF camp there and wait for them to open at 10am if I don't get lucky at the Sprint store.

And she'd better frakking do it, too, considering how many times I helped her camp for the Wii, Wii Fit, etc, etc.

jptx @ 6/2/2009 12:17:45 PM # Q
When I find out there is at leat limited tethering solution and I can get it on my Sero plan or another economical plan, I'll buy,

If I heard reviews that the browsing experience is a paradigm shift into awesome, i might bite earlier.

Pre Rocks!!!
NxlKing2304 @ 6/3/2009 5:51:32 AM # Q
I have a palm pre and this unit is unlike any other palm you have ever experienced! Don't believe me, I'll send you a picture! Anyway, This phone does it all. i'm a little bummed about the absent memory slot, But what are you gonna do.. This phone blows the icrap out of the water.

On another note, anybody who wants GSM in this country should seriously conider that GSM technology is over 25 years old and is outdated. one of the reasons why you will probably never see it in our country. Sprint has the FASTEST DATA ANYWHERE. Way faster than Verizon or AT&T. T-mobile doesnt compare to anybody.

Celebrating Our 1 Month Anniversary

Jorin @ 6/4/2009 7:27:12 PM # Q
June 6th will make a full month that I've had the Pre.
Been a HUGE Palm fan for the past 4 years and while there is a good amount of Palm goodness missing from the Pre, there's an equal amount of new Palm innovation that makes this phone a must have for any Palm fan.
In short I'm more excited about the WebOS potential than I am the device itself. For anyone that thinks WebOS will flop... you're just plain wrong.
