Comments on: CompanionLink to Offer Palm Pre Sync Software

webOS Contact SyncCompanionLink Software has announced that it will offer a two-way sync solution for the Palm Pre. The company says it will extend its contact management and CRM software sync software to the Pre and webOS.

Users will be able to sync contacts, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, calendar events, tasks, notes, and alarms and reminders between the Palm Pre and popular contact management solutions like ACT! by Sage, Google, Palm Desktop, Lotus Notes, GoldMine, and Microsoft Outlook. Complete two-way synchronization ensures that any change to data on the Palm Pre will synchronize back with the contact management database. CompanionLink lets users choose between wired (USB) sync and wireless (over-the-air) sync with their phone.

Great news

This is great news for those of us who still need desktop connectivity to Outlook on our desktops, without an exchange server to mediate. Over the air/cloud syncing, while hip and trendy, is not a comprehensive solution for a lot of us.

Ditto. Plus this handles about everything necessary. For the Mac?

For Sure ! This is a relief !
How ever I feel we will all have to change our mind set sooner than later !
The cloud is above us and is calling ....it is only a matter of time.

And it will sync with Palm Desktop?! That's surprising.

Hmmm ... but what happens when there is no longer a Palm Desktop?

It took Palm a while to kick out that Vista version.

Would they bother with a Win 7 or even Mac OS X Snow Leopard version, now that they seem to be touting The Cloud?

I called this one a long time ago. Considering it took a year from when Vista his retail shelves for Palm & Access to get the "non-beta-but-basically-still-beta" Vista-compliant Palm Desktop out, I'd say the chances of seeing a Windows 7-specific version are about as high as seeing a LifeDrive 2 with an 8gb microdrive.

Now, that said, I am sure the Vista Palm Desktop will work fine on at least 32-bit versions of Windows 7. Of course, given Palm & Access' refusal to acknowledge that the installed base of 64-bit Windows systems is growing daily, I'm not the least bit surprised at anything they do or don't do.

As far as Palm's future Mac plans, I cannot speculate, as I'm a Wintel guy.

If it runs on Vista it should run on Win7 just fine.

anyone else know?

cgk @ 1/20/2009 5:51:32 PM # Q
So who else got the SDK early? We know about the Launch Partners but this company wasn't one of them.

All I see is Chapura in that picture. Are you saying Companion Link Software and Chapura are the same company? I could not find any thing that linked the 2 companies together. Similar products though.

Palm should license this

mabsut @ 1/20/2009 11:54:02 PM # Q
Provided these guys can keep what they promise, I think this should be shipped with every Pre, enabling the device for the mostly-off crowd.

The poll is irrelevant. Cloud syncing is still crap. Wait for Palm/Sprint to make it a NO-button automagic affair. Then run the poll next year.

Oh, and here's something I haven't seen anyone bring up. What if you're traveling and you lose your phone or have it stolen? You'd want to get a new Pre ASAP. But wait - all that data is only on your HOME PC HD. It'll only take that happening *once* for people to want to have *some* sort of backup data in The Cloud.

Gekko, you can go hide under your bed now. Or, actually, back into your cardboard box.
