Comments on: Specific Verizon Centro 1.03 ROM Update Details Named

A member of Palm's technical support staff has posted some information to the Palm.com support forums with additional details on the newly-released Verizon Centro 1.03 ROM update. The Palm tech support staffer "HardBeatZ" goes on to list the specific improvements made in the new Centro ROM as follows:

Specific enhancements:

The first is to add an error message when there is "no service" and a call is dropped if applicable.
Here is the technical explanation (Palm has added software support where if service is lost immediately after origination, modem disconnects the call with "no service" error which is not handled as an error. So no UI is displayed. This was fixed by adding in a handling code of "no service" call disconnect as an error.)

verizon fw update

Maxfli82 @ 11/5/2008 12:05:00 PM # Q
I've upgraded my centro to 1.03 Verizon F/W. I've not noticed any major differences. I have made a few calls and it seems that the call clarity seems to have improved slightly, especially indoors. Have to test my bluetooth headset quality to see if that has improved as others are claiming.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the feedback. Please keep us updated with any changes to the positive or the negative. I am still awaiting word on which firmware version the "new" Sprint Centros are shipping with--it's rumored to be 1.08.

BT Headsets

Gekko @ 11/5/2008 3:46:44 PM # Q

which BT headset do you people use? i can't bring myself to buy/use one of these due to -

1. shitty sound - static, low volume, poor voice, bitching callers
2. geek look factor
3. one extra thing to have to charge/carry/drop/lose/fight/fumble with

Here are 3 better reasons aside from the geek factor why you might want to consider skipping BT as long as you're using a Centro:

1. Palm OS' sh!!tty BT stack means poor sound quality, no voice dialing over BT, random disconnects and frequently dropped pairings etc.

2. Having to fumble with 2 brands/types of chargers (Athena for your Centro + micro or miniUSB or whatever for your headset). Or you can carry a Palm-branded headset but they leave a lot to be desired as far as size, aesthetics, sound quality and comfort.

3.The Centro's battery life is already bad enough without BT on. Using BT will absolutely bleed it dry. You might want to invest in a Seidio 1350mAh extended battery or just reconsider BT entirely.

what's odd is that the PalmOS Treo/Centro BT works excellent for built-in factory OEM Toyota/Lexus audio systems (and i'm sure for other makes too). sound is great, quick connect/disconnect and absolutely no static. perhaps car audio systems are more forgiving? BT headsets are awful with treo/centro but car systems are flawless? perhaps due to proximity/confined space/power wattage?

possible problem

Maxfli82 @ 11/7/2008 2:40:32 PM # Q
Since I upgraded to the 1.03 Verizon FW, I noticed that I haven't been able to update my PRL by dialing *228 option 2.
I was able to do so as directed during the update process, but only after 3 tries. Now every time I try, I cannot get it to update. Never had this problem before. I'm going to be calling Verizon about it. Hope it's not due to the fw update. I wonder if anyone else experienced this.

Verizon also (last week sometime?) recently changed their *228 system somewhat. You are now given 3 prompts (1 program phone, 2 PRL update, 3 activate a replacement handset) instead of the former 2. The PRL updating process also seems to go a bit faster but it's also more succeptible to drop-outs etc in the handful of phones I've updated the PRL on in the past week.

Maybe there is some glitch between the 1.03 Centro ROM & the new VZW PRL system???

if you had sprint's unlimited everything plan, you'd never have to worry about roaming or prl updates.

Battery life after 1.03 update

scolab @ 11/9/2008 10:20:34 AM # Q
I installed the 1.03 update last evening. All seemd to go smoothly. I woke up to a dead Centro this morning. After recharging, it's dead again after about 6 hours. I used to get 3 or 4 days between charges with ROM 1.02. What's up? I can't live with a 6 hour battery charge. Can anyone offer a solution, or a way to revert back to 1.02?

I did not notice a change after doing the update. It sounds like maybe you left the Bluetooth on? I only get 6-8 hours battery life when I leave the BT on by accident.

I've always left BT on 24/7 and the charge level would rarely dip below 50% after 2 or three days. Nothing has changed in my usage except for the update.

I reflashed the Centro again last evening with the 1.03 update, then recharged. Centro has about 10% battery left after 6 hours overnight. Any other suggestions befoe I drop this on Verizon's doorstep?

Nothing w.r.t. the Centro has changed other than the update - okay, that's certainly a possibility.

How about w.r.t. the Centro's environment? You say you leave bluetooth on - has any bluetooth-enabled device been added to the environment - headphone on a charger, diongle on a PC, laptop, Wii console, snooping neighbor?

Nothing has changed. I did read somewhere that the update also had something to do with Verizon's new policy of dropping the pay-as-you-go data plan on 11/14, but that's unconfirmed. I have that plan with a block as I don't use email or internet, but I do sync daily with my Outlook. I'm wondering if something in the update is possibly trying to "phone home", but with my data blocked, it's continually retrying? I'm grasping at straws here. Even if I disable Bluetooth, battery runs down quickly. I've even found a hidden menu that allowed me to disable EVDO, as I don't use data, but that hasn't helped much either. I also have a post on the Palm board, so hopefully a Palm tech will reply. I'll post back here if I find a resolution.

dead chicken with santeria chants?

RE: Battery life after 1.03 update
scolab @ 11/18/2008 1:40:45 PM # Q
The dead chicken made my Centro smell bad. The chants put me to sleep. But by a process of elimination, removing the keycaps app solved my battery drain. Back to about 72 hours between charges with minimal phone use.
