Comments on: Palm SVP of Global Markets Leaving

Palm has filed a regulatory 8-K statement with the SEC indicating a "Change in Directors or Principal Officers." It turns out that Palm's Senior Vice President, Global Markets, John Hartnett will be leaving the company effective November 28. The circumstances around his departure were not disclosed.

John Hartnett has been a longtime Palm/palmOne/Handspring employee and joined Palm from the Handspring acquisition. He was promoted to Senior Vice President in May 2005. As a SVP he worked closely with and reported directly to the CEO Ed Colligan.

Heatherbot's Dad?

>>>John is responsible for Palm's sales and customer support

Was he?

And he's leaving during a recession?

First one off the Titanic, eh?

Actually I see this as exactly the opposite... Palm's global sales suck, and people have been complaining about their custom service for years. That yay-hoo was probably making a grip of cash since he'd been around for a 100 years... Hopefully they can bring in some new blood with s renewed passion to build the company.

Sounds like that's been the strategy elsewhere in the company, why not in sales and support as well?

Tungsten T -> Palm TX -> TX & Centro (Good combo so far!)

See, this is a Bad Sign.

HE must have seen Nova, et al. And THAT didn't keep him on board.

So there must NOT be a "breakthrough level of innovation" - otherwise this guy would've stayed put and cashed in on a soaring stock.

Yes and no.

For SOME reason he is allowed to exercise his already-vested options for a full year (rather than, say, 30 days). This could suggest he negotiated (or was given for some unknown reason) a longer period so he could reap the rewards of an increased stock price "later on".

It is not clear, in addition, that his departure was voluntary thus, in that case, seeing Nova would have been irrelevant.

I'd hesitate to read too much into this. There's just too many reasons why somebody could leave the company that have nothing to do with Palm's prospects. Personal life, internal politics, better offer somewhere else, health, or just wanting to take some time off.

"Seeing Nova"? WHAT Nova? As Gekko would say: "Nothing to see here people. Move along!"

And now...rumors of a heavily-subsidized (perhaps $99 w/ contract) BB Storm on VZW? Palm might as well release the CDMA Treo Pro and call it a day.

Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->Zodiac 2->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon Treo 755p

> "Seeing Nova"? WHAT Nova?...

Well, okay, let's spell it out a little more than:

For:

== "seeing Nova"

substitute:

== "being aware of what Nova is and its probable release schedule"

Ya like those cheap Bolds, huh?

How about free Epixes (epixi?):

When my little mind reminds me there is STILL a Palm, I keep wondering what kind of future it can possibly have aside from the Dead Pool.

1) It's driven away the millions who embraced PDAs

2) It's openly mocked power users over and over again

3) Its present is based on a foundation of commodity-priced Centros

Let's say there actually IS a Nova.

1) Do we really expect Palm to come up with something BETTER than Apple or Google?

2) Even if they do, who would buy it? Will people drop their iPhones/iPod Touch or G1s or Blackberries? Would $99 Centro owners pay more for ... something they wouldn't really understand anyway? (How many Centro n00bs put on 3rd-party software anyway?)

At this point, I really don't care what Palm has. I doubt I'll be impressed or want to buy it. Anyone else?

I seem to remember a comment by Colligan that this thought applies to ALL Treo/Centro buyers.

Not much of a loss.

IMO, way too many tech firms are top-heavy these days. A good historic comparison was American car companies in the mid-50's around the Edsel era. A lot of these forty year men that has been around before self-starters at the time. When they retired, the were just not replaced.

I see that same with the tech business, a lot of these "eight inch floppy guys" need to be unloaded and not replaced to keep the salary low.

Yes, age discrimination does rule the (software) tech world.

#@*!!! Anonymous anger rampant on Internet
By Todd Leopold
CNN

(CNN) - There's a whole world of people out there, and boy, are they pissed off.
The anonymity of the Internet encourages online ranting, from election-season tirades to mockery of celebrities.

The anonymity of the Internet encourages online ranting, from election-season tirades to mockery of celebrities.

On political blogs, the invective flies. Posters respond to the latest celebrity gossip with mockery or worse. Sports fans set up Web sites with names that begin with "fire," hoping coaches, athletic directors and sportscasters lose their jobs.

Palm needs money?

SeldomVisitor @ 11/4/2008 4:00:20 AM # Q
Palm filed to sell more stock (among other items) so they could raise more cash. They aren't necessarily selling said stuff NOW but might simply be preparing to do so "soon". The filing of this registration may be a key datapoint w.r.t. Palm's viability.
