Noticed a minor detail re: color choices on Palm's site

hkklife @ 5/23/2006 2:33:46 PM # Q
Perhaps something is coming along in a few months to keep interest high?

On Palm.com's 700P order page it lists "Color:" for both Sprint & VZW Treos. Right now both units are only available in the standard silver/black color scheme but I do recall a rumor months ago on TreoCentral saying that pink, blue and a couple other colors were rumored.

That'd be unlike Palm as far as past Treo history goes but the Vx, IIIe, m500 and m100s have all enjoyed various special edition colors over the years.

And Handspring, the original Treo daddy, dabbled in colors for the Visor line.

I'd rather Palm concentrate (for once) on building the hardware to last at least a few months, rather than all this marketing nonsense of colors, "Special Editions" and such.

If Palm were to advertise on the same "catchy" boxes that their "1-year warranty" has been morphed into not really covering *any* hardware defects, I wonder how many people would be fronting $649.00 for these devices.

I remember a time when Palm would *advance ship* a replacement unit at *their expense* when your device went south. Surely that was abused and I can understand why they'd modify it. But now we have the other extreme where Palm claims that *any* defective hardware is "assumed" to be user-created and hence not covered under warranty.

Palm has very serious issues if they have taken much of their customer support funding and put it into deep discussions of what color paint to use to sell more devices. The 700p finally looks like a winner - but if Palm's "1-year warranty" has become a dead letter, there's gonna be a *LOT* of disappointed purchasers once they discover Palm officially blames it's customers for defective hardware and won't honor the warranty.

Make the thing all black, purple, maroon, yellow, whatever - but build it properly and stand behind it.

They can't be serious?!?

They want to charge $15-$30 a month to use a modem that is already built into the phone?

Only from Verizon.

GSM, where are you?

It's a pity that UMTS auction/3G adoption is delaying the rollout of all the best GSM smartphones coming down the pike. I'm dying to get my hands on the Motorola Q.

BUYING 700P Q'S, PALM DESKTOP > ENTOURAGE SWITCH? - Missing Sync

palmstory @ 5/24/2006 8:42:36 PM # Q
Hi folks,

Hope you can answer these Q's before I buy 700P

Can I receive/call while getting email or browsing on 700P, or using dial up for laptop?

As to laptop, I am on Mac OS 10.4.6 (always Updated), Powerbook 17' with WiFi and BT. Can I assume that 700P can be used as a BT Modem for me to get online?

Is this 700P 3 Band - Analog + Digital etc or just Digital?

I am concerned about the flexibility in my Cell Phone Coverage while Roaming. I do understand that the DATA aspect of 700P can be utilized on only in certain areas where that EVDO etc. Network is available... Hopefully those areas include rural areas, since I often travel.

PALM DESKTOP > ENTOURAGE SWITCH?

Currently I am using Palm Desktop 4.21 on my Mac, with Tungsten T3, and it works GREAT, but I am considering switching to Entourage 2004(the latest version), which I use for my email only.

REASON? -- Palm Desktop is supposedly still DISCONTINUED from further Developement by Palm, and, unlike Entourage, it doesn't have Spotlight Support. Also, unlike Entourage, PD doesn't share it's Addresses with Apple's Address Book, and thus .Mac which is a fantastic feature!

This is what Microsoft says:

-----------------------------------------
http://www.support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;871016

2.8 Importing data from Palm Desktop

Entourage 2004 no longer supports direct imports from Palm Desktop. To synchronize your data with Palm Desktop, do the following.

To install handheld device support for Entourage, use the Handheld Sync
Installer inside the Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools folder.

To copy all your data from Palm Desktop to your Palm device, synch your Palm
device with Palm Desktop. To import all your data from your Palm into
Entourage, synch your Palm device with Entourage.
-----------------------------------------

My problem is that I am terrified of doing that Hotsync, as far as losing my Data. Of course, I'll do a back up with BackupBoddy 2.15 to SD Card, as well as on my PB17 into different folder, but still...

I've tried a REHEARSAL IMPORT, EXPORT via my OLD OFFICE X ENTOURAGE, and it's a NIGHTMARE to line up/match the Fields between Entourage and PD. However, Vcard Export of Individual Contacts from PD to Entourage works fine, but to do that with over 3,000 Contacts in PD is gonna take forever, and what about Exporting To Do's, Calendar, Memos?

Is there a SITE, LIST, GROUP anywhere I could go to for that kind of help?

I am yet to hear from Missing Sync Support... Maybe MS can Sync PD and Entourage, since it now

While the Reviews here are less than enthusiastic
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19749

Missing Sync own sight

http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_palmos_features.html

is quite "rosy", stating:

Support for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Sync Services - New!
The Missing Sync includes three conduits-Mark/Space Contacts, Mark/Space Events and Mark/Space Tasks-that synchronize directly with Tiger's Address Book and iCal applications. Neither the iSync application nor the iSync Palm Conduit are necessary for syncing your Palm OS device with Tiger.

-----------------------------------------

Sorry to pile 3 Topics into 1 Post! I am just trying to PUT IT ALL TOGETHER!!!

The scariest part is that, if anything goes wrong, each product's tech support is going to pass the blame via the usual mantra:

"we don't support xxxx product...."

The SIMPLEST WAY, I guess would be to stay with Palm Desktop, until I get used to this 700P, then do Missing Sync, and then move from Palm Desktop to Entourage?

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS, URLS etc.

2.5mm jack and an antenna AGAIN!!!!!!!??

Hitman1 @ 5/26/2006 2:31:41 PM # Q
Someone please explain to me this: is it REALLY HARD to get rid of the the antenna? And why o why that odd 2.5mm jack? why can't it be a standard stereo jack??

RE: 2.5mm jack and an antenna AGAIN!!!!!!!??
hkklife @ 5/26/2006 4:46:38 PM # Q
$$$$$

To leave the external antennae ON the unit is akin to removing the charging LED, voice recorder etc. off of the T5/TX and going with 4gb HD instead of 2gb flash on the LD.

Palm would rather save a few pennies per unit on the front end at the expense of long-term sales & spec sheet impressiveness.

In fairness, it should be noted that Verizon has a thing for external antennas. Almost all of their devices have them, both phones and smartphones. To make Verizon happy, they'd probably have to leave the antenna on.

ginsberg @ 5/26/2006 8:46:40 PM # Q
Take a look at some competitors to the Treo:
The BlackBerry 8700c (on Verizon) has no protruding antenna.
The Motorola Q (on Verizon) has no protruding antenna.
The Samsung i320 (not available yet) has no protruding antenna.
The HP iPAQ 69xx (not available yet) has no protruding antenna.
The Nokia E61 (not on Verizon) has no protruding antenna.

I'm sure that Verizon does not encourage vendors to include external antennas.

The US market is more tolerant of external antennas than other regions. But Palm knows that if they want to boost Treo sales in Europe, they need to lose the antenna. It's just taking Palm more time than anyone expected.

AdamaDBrown @ 5/27/2006 3:34:28 AM # Q
The i320, iPaq 6900, and E61 will never be available on Verizon because they're GSM devices.

As for the Blackberry and the Q, those were both originally GSM designs which essentially got ported to Verizon's CDMA network. Verizon does have a certain tolerance for antennaless devices, but they do have a known policy of preferring antennas. There are plenty of antennaless devices available on other carriers in the US, but Verizon is decidedly pro-antenna.

As to the 2.5mm jack, it's the standard for phones, and thus what the Treo ships with. Even so, I'm sure the fact that Palm has quite a brisk trade going selling stereo adapters is a big part of it as well.

Even so, I wish it had a 3.5mm jack too.

This sig is a placeholder till I come up with something good

The only PDA phone I know has a 3.5 mm headphone jack is my HTC Universal, and at that size it better have. The new Walkman phones from Sony Ericsson also have 3.5 mm sockets.

Again with the big stick, again with the high radiation count.

Come on Palm, 5 months and then the contract on my Universal runs out and I will be looking for a new phone. Will I return to the fold and buy another Palm? Not with crap like this. Come on Palm raise your game and build something worth buying. Or don't, and die the slow death of shrinking market share, it's your jobs at stake not mine.

Phones on a CDMA netowrk work much better with an antenna. Not using an antenna means redesigning alot of phones that work just fine on GSM networks without antennas. What i can't believe is that this thing is going to be $400??? No way Jose. I'll take the Q anyday.

RE: 2.5mm jack and an antenna AGAIN!!!!!!!??

How much is the Q going to be?

This sig is a placeholder till I come up with something good
RE: 2.5mm jack and an antenna AGAIN!!!!!!!??
Surur @ 5/30/2006 3:47:46 AM # Q

Its $200 with a minimum $80/month contract for 450 minutes incoming, unlimited weekends, unlimited incoming and unlimited data on Verizon. The contract is similar as the Treo 700p contract on Verizon, but the Treo is $200 more expensive. Of course the Treo contracts are a lot cheaper on Sprint, but then when the Q gets to Sprint it will likely be cheaper too.

They said I only argued for the sake of arguing, but after an hour I convinced them they were wrong...

$200 with new activation, I think. I don't know how much without.
