Comments on: Cracked Palm IIIc Cases
Mark Ressa writes...
Seems there are a significant number of IIIc's developing cracked rear cases. Personally I've had one such case and it looks as if my second IIIc is developing cracks as well. Not sure what Palm's position is on this as I've read that several people have paid Palm $100 to repair. Clearly Palm should cover these repairs free of charge and should announce cognizance of the problem.

RE: Palm IIIc cases
I noticed from the get-go that the sensitivity to get Grafitti to do anything was VERY weak. I almost had to grind the stylus into the screen to get it to recognize anything.
Then sure enough, a day or two later, I looked and there were indeed cracks in the back of the case - and I *know* that I have never dropped it before at all, ever.
Luckily I took it back, and they gave me a new one, no questions asked. But you are indeed not the only one that has had this problem...

About 10 days after receiving my 2nd replacement unit, the same types of cracks developed on the new unit.I called technical support this time and they said that they could not help me and that I would have to call customer relations at Palm. I made that call and they did replace it under warranty.
I asked the rep if this was a commen problem with the 3c and she said that she didn't know. The reps are not supplied with that information.
By the way it has been 4 days since my last replacement, with no problems. The phone number of customer relations is 888-956-7256.

Luckily, I purchased my IIIc from one of our merchant partners, Franklin Covey, on Quixtar. Franklin-Covey simply asked for my invoice number and generated an exchange ticket with Palm. They are shipping a replacement unit via Airborne Express. I just have to hotsync my data before I return the defective one in the same box as the new one I get.
Apparently, Palm has a manufacturing problem. Hopefully the new unit will not experience the same problem, but at least I know our affiliate companies take care of us (and their customers) very well.

The woman at Palm support logged my complaint for later use. Since this appears to me to be a design defect due to so many reported instances, I'd like to wait until the design problem is fixed. I doubt the crack can lead to internal damage unless the whole unit gets wet.

I wonder like someone else posted if this could have something to do with the rechargeable battery. After all this is the first plastic Palm that uses one, maybe the case design just isn't up to the challenge.
I'm going to wait & see for now as I take very good care of my IIIc (screen protection since day one) & I'm not happy at the prospect of a refurbished banged up IIIc, even if it is offered.

RE: Palm IIIc cases
I pointed out to them that lots of people were having this problem and that they had already
replaced the case for free in many others, they agreed to replace it at no cost.
Other than this little problem I have enjoyed my IIIc completely.

I called 3Com. They said that the warranty of my IIIc has been expired and I need to pay a certain amount for changing to a re-new one from Singapore. Of course I would not pay such payment. Now it is still with me, but very seldom use cause I've got a Clie.

I'm not shelling out more money to palm to replace this case with the same plastic junk they used in the first place and am tempted to repair it myself. Anyone have luck doing this?? This is definitely my last palm.
RE: Palm IIIc cases
Good news- Palm recongizes that the cracked rear case is a manufacturing problem and offered to replace or repair my 2 year old Palm 3c - for free. I opted for replacement, of course, and am looking forward to getting a device that won't have to be held in the cradle with a large paper clip!
RE: Palm IIIc cases
They are shipping me a temp unit and will said they will replace the back at no cost to me.
Poor Quality Coupled with Poor Customer Service
I received in regards to the software questions I had
(minus lack of cognizant function from "Dosti" opinion),
hardware problems are now surfacing. I have been tooling
around other news sites in regards to the Palm IIIc for
information, and so far it seems that there are serious issues
with the sensitivity of the touch-screen, battery recharging,
cracked cases and memory leaks. As it stands, there has
been no interaction with Palm or it's "Technical Support"
personnel to rectify these problems. It seems that in
order to receive any relief, the item must have been
purchased from a third party vendor, i.e., CompUSA which
in my opinion has little to no customer service, either.
I am still very happy with the Palm IIIc since I have yet
to experience any technical problem which I cannot handle
myself. I keep away from any Palm developed software as
it seems they do not have the programming talent as most
third party companies. In the event I do experience a
technical problem, I would, and I would suggest this to
everyone, you immediately request to spreak to a manger
and/or a shift supervisor or other person in authority
to make an actual decision. If not. Demand your money
back because the first thing out of their technicians'
mouths is a request for your serial number so they can
charge you for the call.

My Cracked Palm IIIc
Cracked IIIc cases
As for the cracked cases, that is appalling. Palm needs to own up and do a recall. If this were the automotive industry they're heads would be on the block. If they are serious about enterprise computing and handhelds they need to get a grip. Any large company would have their heads for faulty equipment as such.
I bought the extra warrantly offered by best buy. I was skeptical about it and haven't needed it but having heard all of this I'm glad I have. The additional features of OS 3.5 are nice however if the upgrade were now available I wouldn't put it on my husbandsIIIx or daughters III until they get it straight. I certainly wouldn't pay for the upgrade at this point.
IIIc Case Cracked and really bad service
Palm is totally out of touch. I would not do business with them again for anything, or for any new product they may invent!

My IIIc also has a Y shaped crack in the top right corner. I certainly will not be forking out 100 bucks for a fix!
Pay the extra up front!
Cracked case
a common problem with their IIIc as the rep I talked to said he just received a memo on this a few minutes
before I called. There is a qualifier though ---
your IIIc has to be manufactured within specific dates,
I believe he said it should be beween January (?)and February 28,2000, for it to be covered by their warranty. They are going to send me a new replacement in about 3 days. Let's hope this one doesn't break!

It is true that 3com want to charge $100 for a .20c Item. I like my IIIc very much but I feel the cover is cheeply made, and #com should produce a stronger replacement.

Another Cracked Palm IIIc
Fortunately I was under warranty, they are sending me a refurbished palm. I think I may just replace my back with the refurbished palm's.
Power button
RE: Power button
I am fortunate. I've had a IIIc for a while now, and Ol' Rickety hasn't gotten any back fractures yet (now knocking on something wooden), but the power button doesn't work like it used to. I think they won't sell us a power button, because replacing it means opening the case, therefore voiding the warranty. Probably the same reason they won't sell us the backs for 20 cents.
My biggest concern is the startling lack of parts available for the IIIc ANYWHERE. They must be really tight about allowing that stuff out. I've found replacement parts for every palm out there (I think) except the IIIc. I am fortunate I've had so few problems. My palm is not cracked, the screen is clear and whole (always use screen protectors), and I've only suffered a rare few hard resets (saved by backup buddy). I'll keep babying Ol' Rickety so I don't end up a statistic!!!

Cracked IIIc case
contacted Palm and they offered to fix it if I sent in $100+. The back has four screws and
would take about 30 seconds to replace if they would sell us the part. I agree that Palm has made
a very poor slection in materials and case design, which make this case very prone to cracking.
Coupled with their unwillingness to sell you a 50 cent part makes the IIIc a poor choice. I told
customer service that I would continue to advertise their product with the circuit board sticking
out the bottom. When it quits functioning, it won't be Palm that I will be contacting. I have
warned by brother and a friend not to get the Palm when they made their recent PDA purchases.
If anyone starts a class action suit, please contact me.
Buy a new one and quit crying. These things don't last
RE: Cracked IIIc case
Being a shareholder and a Customer satisfaction should be first. I hope Palm has fully reviewed this issue and they honestly feel this is a quality frame.
From my experience, IT IS NOT.
Most importantly, this case is not worth the $125 + S/H and Palm SHOULD make it available as replacement parts at a reasonable price.
Listen up Palm Inc. We love you. Now help us and allow us to feel good about our love. We will then continue to buy your newer products (toys).
You're a Palm shareholder and I'M the idiot???

Losing future business!
For as little as plastic costs, and as much as I spent on this, you'd think they'd jump to replace it, or as I requested, send me the part and I'd do it myself.
I purchased a new IIIc and Vx for home use. Several more for work. You can bet I won't be buying any more of their products in the future and I'd highly recommend anyone thinking about buying a PDA to consider other manufacturers if this is the route Palm wishes to take. As part of my job, I'm a purchasing agent for the Federal Govt. and I ALWAYS remember who took the opportunity to fix an issue and who didn't.
Not impressed.

RE: Losing future business!
I did pay and received an exchange product last August. After 9 months and absolutely no drops, there are cracks arount the sleeve and docking port. I will not pay another 160.00, I will not buy another Palm product, And I will advise anyone and everyone willing to listen that Palm does not support their customer base.
RE: Losing future business!
I told you they'd lose my business...
Well Palm, I warned ya. I bought myself a Handspring Visor Pro and bought the wife a Visor Edge. When we need to replace the ones at work, they'll likely be a Handspring brand too. You can bet they won't be Palm.
Meanwhile, I have at least $1000 worth of Palm related goodies that make poor paperweights. :-(

palm iiic cracks
Nobody ever returns my email from palm support, except for the automated one, which really doesnt help now does it?
Now, today, I read the warranty for the first time, (doh!), and see the warranty specifies that it doesnt cover cracks to the outer case of the palm(makes me suspicious that they stipulate this...)
Oh, woe is me, I've been screwed...
RE: palm iiic cracks
RE: Cracked Palm Case
Palm wouldn't do anything at that time, even my store warranty would not cover that as the case is not covered in the warranty and extended warranty. The store offered to send it in for replacement, but I would have to pay for the repairs (this in 2000).
I recently had an auto accident, and the Palm in its leather case took a beating. Pieces are falling off (and out), but it still works. I have to resort to using glue to hold it together. $100(USD) is WAY too much for me to pay for a new case!
I think that I am going to buy a HandSpring next. I can't believe I paid over $700 and have to resort to my notepad again! Jeeze, talk about fustration - and just after I finally master Graffiti!
Customer Service=@#!%
To say that my case is now cracked is an understatement. I had no idea it was a manufacturing defect until I read this web page. It didn't even cross my mind that if you paid over $500 dollars for something you can throw (sorry, not throw place) in your pocket that it would/could turn to trash in less than 3 years. She, Connie, told me I could contact gethightech.com and purchase a replacement case there ($60). I explained to her that the problem is so horrific that they too can't supply them....there are no used units (with a good case) to be scavenged. The cases Palm was/is putting on the repaired units (I have read) have an indentation in the plastic back to accommodated the expansion and contraction of the battery. Obviously Palm is aware of the defect but refuses to accept responsibility. All I wanted was for someone to bill me a reasonable price and send me a $10 piece of black plastic in the mail. The original IIIc I love but can't stand the stonewalling and total denial by their customer service reps.. No wonder the other guys are eating their lunch.
By the way, they said they'd do me a favor and fix my unit for half price...$125. What is the best replacement (not Palm) for a IIIc?
P.S. I'm talking to the guy in South Africa who says he has made a replacement case for the IIIc. I'll post a follow-up if he ever sells me one and I actually get it. I'm not ready to drop this thing in the trash yet.
