Dear Dataviz - Need WEB QUERY for Sheet To Go!

Gekko @ 10/18/2006 2:35:19 PM # Q

Dear Dataviz -

SUGGESTION -
Please add Web Query function to your Sheet To Go product. I'd love to be able to have a spreadsheet on my phone and press a button on the spreadsheet (refresh data) and have Sheet To Go do a web query and go out to the internet and pull in dynamic information in real time over the air right into the spreadsheet - ex. stock quotes and yield information. Now I have to do the Query on my PC and sync it to my Phone which is a PIA. This would open up a HUGE world of possibilities for your customers and would put you in a great position!

THANKS!!!

p.s. Here is how Excel does it:

Also, please add support for using .odt .ods files (OpenOffice Word and Excel).

And add the mobile version of the Data > filter > Auto Filter function in Excel/OpenOffice.

Why don't you use Sunrise/Plucker, Avantgo, RSS reader to do it?

I know I would make use of OpenDocument support if dataviz would add it. saddly, they likely never will, unless it becomes a major format.

I'd like to second the support for OpenOffice.

We're switching to OO, and having support for that would make this product that much more desirable.

One by one, the penguins are stealing my sanity.

OpenOffice??? Please don't ask Dataviz to waste their time and resources supporting an arcane product with 2% market share. Suck it up and buy MSFT Office like the rest of the free world.

Just $tabilize It!

LiveFaith @ 10/18/2006 3:10:54 PM # Q
Every time DV releases a new "upgrade" I always read the specs for one thing ... "enhanced stability". It never happens tho.

More little enhancements and compatibilities or functions, but the crashes, data mangling, and even hard resets continue. I just deleted and reloaded all my D2G v7 apps earlier today on my Treo. Every remedy I tried to keep the device from resetting when entering Docs2Go would not solve it. This has been standard procedure among host of other transfer issues with every single copy since v3. That on every single Palm device I've owned.

No way on earth I'm spending $$$ for a few (probably unstable) enhancements. This could be a prime time product if they would get serious about stability and document corruption. After years of use, I have a little alarm going off in my head every time I open or edit or sync a document. Sooner or later a time consuming mess occurs. Because of this I still stay near my beastie, sluggish, albeit faithful Microshaft powered laptop when out on business.

If these issues were seriously addressed, then I would spring for $40 in a heartbeat over my current version. This product "could" make the laptop stay home, but constant stability fears keep me from depending on it for mission critical info.

C'mon DV. Give anything with version X.5 and I'll show you the money.

I am 100% with you Pat. I have never gotten DTG to run even passably well on my Clie, Zire 71 or Zire 72. I just kept using WordSmith.

hkklife @ 10/18/2006 6:26:00 PM # Q
DTG is sluggish as molasses but it's always been stable for me and I've been using it ever since, oh, version 4 or so. I doubt I'll be upgrading to version 9, however. Justifying 8 was a stretch from 7 (DTG 6 to 7 was the last really worthwhile upgrade IMO-maybe even 5 to 6 come to think of it) and 9's just not worth it.

Sad to see that they are already hawking DTG 10 for next year and basically telling you upfront that DTG 9 is an interim, stopgap solution. Has this EVER been done in the tech world before--hawking a pre-release price for the successori product on the DAY the new version is released???

Do Palm & Dataviz share marketing departments? If I were Palm I'd at least have tried to armtwist Dataviz into letting me put DTG 9 Pro on the new Treo 680 to give it one more solid improvement over the 650 and 700p.

I suppose if they could prove that this build is at least 0.05% more stable than the previous build, then they've got a valid argument ;)

Hi,
in all my reviewing so far, I saw only one crash on the Treo 600. And then, after relaunching DocsToGo, it even asked me if I wanted to return to the file I had open before the crash(sort of like Office) as it could contain unsaved changes.

BTW, if you want some DocsToGo 9 porn(aka a review) - here it is:

InTact Technology

InTact Technology appears to be a major and useful upgrade. I will look more into it when I have the time.

Lame upgrade

scottm @ 10/18/2006 6:16:47 PM # Q
Wow. I'm so impressed. They take away a bunch of features, add an upgrade to the sync technology, then charge people an extra $19.99 to ensure an upgrade to support the Office 2007 format when there's no reason they couldn't support it now. Oh, and just before this lame release, they offer a free upgrade to v9 to previous owners who upgrade to v8 now. The way they worded the email, it sounded like v9 wasn't imminent, and I think most people assumed that v9 would have office 2007 support.

Dataviz historically had a new release about once a year. This one was quite late, and the office 2007 support seemed like a given. Now they release this one and it sounds like they'll be doing another release in 4-6 months for the office 2007 support. Uncool trick, at least that's the way it looks to me.

Yes, I am bitter. I feel like I got burned by upgrading to v8 two weeks ago with the v9 upgrade promise and then they want another $20 for Office 2007 support.

Have They Lost Their Minds!!!! $$$$

ScottG @ 10/18/2006 6:42:31 PM # Q
I just laid out $29.99 for the Prem Eddition about 4 Months ago fot the 8.0. Now they want Another $29.99 to move up one Version to Rev 9.0.

Sorry Guys, that $60.00 in 4 Months total for a $29.99 Program. I'm getting tired of being bent over by these little nothing upgrades for more money. In Fact this version has several supported formats on the Apple Mac side dropped from this version. Before long their new name will be MSdataBiz

Better yet - ask for a refund.

These sorts of games just encourages hackers and/or competition and/or apathy. I'm sticking with the version 8 my latest Treo came with, and it'll take some sort of clear upgrade policy guarantee (and one heck of a significant reason to upgrade) before I give a dime to this company. 2-3 "full version upgrades" in a year?!? Gimme a break.

When developers churn the heck out of their existing customers they will eventually drive them away. Version 7 never worked well on the 650 and they could blame Palm for that (lousy hardware specs), but version 8 finally works moderately well. WTF have they done to justify yet *another* full version upgrade? And they already hint of *ANOTHER* "full" upgrade to 10 not far behind this one?

Absolutely looney - you can nearly buy a 3-workstation license of the entire MS Office (student/teacher edition) for what a year or two of single-user Docs to Go apparently runs. If I were one of their enterprise purchasers I'd write them (and other developers like Iambic that tend in this direction) a nasty letter about this.

For now, I'm just boycotting purchases from these sorts of companies unless I'm already dependent on the program. They have the choice of selling it to me and supporting it reasonably (which will also be shared with all the Palm users I know), or playing this "churning" game and losing my business (which will also be shared with all the Palm users I know).

eh, just skip every other version?
ackmondual @ 10/19/2006 12:15:56 AM # Q
It costs $30 per upgrade. In the case where most of us got DTG5 or v6 with our hh, that's an extra $120 right there for all the major version updates. I doubt DataViz will allow users to go from version x to version x+2 for just the $30 upgrade price. They'll likely require us to purchase at a new price at $50. Either way, unless u really needed the new major features of the next version right away, it's best to wait till the next version or the version after that to "have your cake and eat it too". Especially since evidently, you only need to wait 4 months for the next version :O

I'm still on DTG7, haven't used DTG8, and doubt I'll get DTG9, but it doesn't seem like the upgrades are that important to those who aren't 'roughnecks' about our Office files. Speaking of features and upgrades...

SD Card Directory Structure with DTG 9

ProfGreg @ 10/20/2006 10:54:56 AM # Q
DTG 9 still scans the entire SD card for supported files. In my case, it finds all of my email stored in txt files via Snappermail.

This makes a mess and slows things down.

My best workaround so far has been to use RescoExplorer as a front end to DTG. Within any hierarchical directory structure, just click on the supported file you want and it opens in DTG [prevously designated as a helper app]. Close the file and you are returned to Explorer. No fuss, no mess.

RE: SD Card Directory Structure with DTG 9
hkklife @ 10/20/2006 11:34:54 AM # Q
What a disaster. The app (DTG) already plods along without scanning the SD for file types. This takes forever on a full 2gb or 4gb SD card!

I cannot fathom why Dataviz hasn't offered the option to disable this scanning for supported files. I already have all of my jpeg, txt etc. files handled by other apps without Dataviz trying to meddle. This is like how RealPlayer used to try and take over my whole desktop and mess up my file associations! It's a shame we have to resort to involving yet another app (Resco) because of Dataviz's borg-like file type assimilations. Sigh...

BTW, thanks for the tip Greg.

Since (at least) version 8, there is a preference to turn off auto-scanning on launch.

Why do people post without actually checking that they are correct?

Luka

wannitnow @ 10/20/2006 2:19:52 PM # Q
Yeah. But if you turn off the scan function, how then would you find your files (if you've dragged it into the sd via a card reader directly etc.) There!

RE: SD Card Directory Structure with DTG 9
hkklife @ 10/20/2006 3:40:07 PM # Q
To be perfectly precise, what I meant was "It'd be nice if there was an option to turn off searching for non-Office file types files to speed up DTG's search.

EG; search only for xls, doc, PDF, ppt etc and/or only tell it to scan in certain directory/directories.

Very ANNOYING bugs in DTG 9

Adif @ 10/20/2006 5:14:06 PM # Q
I should preface this by saying that I'm using a T3 with the Palm Ultra-thin Keyboard. I only use Word to Go and the bugs only relate to that.

1. When I press the Tab key on a new paragraph, the entire paragraph is indented rather than just getting a tab. There seems to be no way to simply enter a tab from the keyboard.

2. If my paragraph is left-and-right justified and I hit Enter to start a new one, the new paragraph resets to left-justified.

3. If I highlight a Tab from a previous paragraph, copy it, and then paste it on a new line (to try to get around bug #1), the text formatting changes. For instance, my text is 9 pt Times New Roman but the new paragraph always resets to 12 pt.

4. I use TealScript and I can no longer tell if TealScript's write-on-screen feature is on or not. In DTG 8 and earlier, there would be a small rectangle in the lower right corner that I could tap on to turn the feature on or off, but DTG 9's rendering mechanism makes this impossible.

At this point I wish I hadn't upgraded. Now I have to fish out the stylus and navigate teh menus to correct every single paragraph I type.

Problems with the File Manager Function!

dsanderson11 @ 10/21/2006 11:41:01 PM # Q
For some reason I can not use the file browser at all on my Lifedrive. Everytime I try to do so it gives me an error message:

Database: can't open (Dm0206)

and then a blank screen. DTG will then open with a blank screen and the same message and will not work until I do a complete uninstall and reinstall. I submitted a trouble ticket to Dataviz on Friday but so far no response. I even did a hard reset of my device and then reinstalled. Same problem. Otherwise it seems to work fine.

This may or may not be related.

I can not use drive mode on my Lifedrive for the last month or so. It gives me a blue screen of Death in Windows XP and an error about USB. No clue as to what either of these problems are.

My configuration:

LD with 2GB SD Card, Sandisk Ultra II.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, I removed the SD card... And still get the same issue. Likewise, I have did extensive troubleshooting, including the afforementioned hard reset.having paid an exorbitant amount for the DTG upgrade, I am not at all happy I can not use one of the key new features. Other than this issue though, I love the package and even turned down a pirated serial to buy the packaged. Since I sent my report in on Friday, I will wait until monday before I get pissed with Dataviz, but I hope they dont send me the same lame time wasting solution of reinstall, since I have done it 20 times already!

Save your money and wait for a later version.

Gatekeeper @ 10/22/2006 7:19:43 PM # Q
I personally have docs to go 8 and love the product. The changes between ver 8 and ver 9 are so minimal in my opinion it's not worth the money to upgrade. The file manager is just a viewer with no power. FileZ is far more powerful and for free. Outside of that add some new eye candy in the way of new Icons and you have ver 9. for $30. I love Dataviz's products but I personally will wait for them to give a better offering.
