Comments on: HP Files for PalmPad Trademark

HP PalmPad The suits at Hewlett-Packard have certainly not been coy about their intentions for a webOS based tablet of some kind. Today brings word that Palm's new corporate parents already have a trademark in mind that could very well end up being the new brand name for such a device.

A blog called myHPmini is reporting that HP has submitted a new trademark filling on the term PalmPad. The mark is described as relating to a long list of mobile computing products, categories and terms including: computer, portable computers, handheld and mobile computers, PDAs, electronic notepads, mobile digital electronic devices.

The application was just filled on July 7th, just about a week after the Palm/HP acquition went official, so it looks like HPQ Holdings is wasting little time on the webOS tablet development process. Checkout the full USPTO docs here.

Not keen on that name. Lacks oomph. Plus, does EVERY damn thing have to be a PAD? Why does everyone follow Apple like that?

PalmPad would've made an AWESOME name for a thin, large greyscale screen Pilot + Newton hybrid in the 90s....but yeah, you're right now. PalmPad apes Apple far too closely. I like "Slate" much more, to be honest.

Not too go OT too much, but I said years ago that Palm/eReader (when they were owned by Palm) could've made an early run at the e-book market with a larger (5" or 6") greyscale unit running OS4. Heck, Palm even made a barely-serious effort at selling those pre-loaded MMCs containing various books. Back in the day I read plenty of public domain ebooks from Memoware (more than I do now due to the lack of expandable store & wireless connectivity in those days) when in school and traveling in the Palm III/V/m500 era.

Without using pad in the name they would have to build their market from scratch instead of mooching off of what Apple has built. On the other hand it fits nicely with the days when HP was building kick ass palmtop computers. Remember HP 200LX? I still have one around here somewhere.
"HP 1010LX palmpad computer" doesn't sound bad ;-)

Coming a year late and being seen as "mooching off" what apple has accomplished will relegate the palmpad to a second/third rate wannabe product.

It took Palm years to build the first mobile devices with a robust development community, that's gone now and won't be returning. Developing apps for mobile devices isn't the get-rich-quick scenario that many people think, developers know it's a very tiny percent that can make a living even when you have potentially tens of millions of customers. I have 31 (as of today) mediocre iOS apps and average under $300/month.

Already been there once with PalmOS, it's anybody's guess how quickly it might change again and leave developers out in the cold. In the hp_webos youtube I watched he talked a lot about bringing hp employees up to speed developing apps with contests & such, maybe they'll not even allow outside developers once they get their people trained. Either way, without a huge customer base there's not a nickel to be made by the average app developers.

Nah, the Palm people would have a fit over that. HP can't think of every possible thing and no way in hell would a company like HP imagine "foolish" stuff like Twitter, et al. (Yes, I'm citing a website instead of an app but it is near sleep time and brain going into shutdown mode... sue me.)

That appears to be a standard socket 370 HSF. I've never heard of a non-Dell machine falling apart like that. But I'm not surprised to hear about that problem with the Dells. Just order a cheapo-o used one off of E-Bay if Dell won't send any freebies.

Since S370 hasn't been widely used in, what, 7-8 years, I wouldn't expect any freebies from Dell. That's why you are better off assembling your own PC from industry-standard parts and not Dell's cheap, proprietary crap!

RE: PalmPad
hkklife @ 7/22/2010 5:40:38 AM # Q
I have personally had horrendous experience with Dell power supplies in particular, though there are lots of reports of bulging/leaking capacitors on motherboards too. I think I read a while back that Dell had switched to a standard ATX power supplies. The last one I had to service a few years ago was a Precott-era P4 and was still proprietary IIRC. I know they do a lot of cost-cutting w.r.t. cooling systems & fans and whatnot. And they still do proprietary stilliness for small things like mobo headers for front panel lights, USB ports etc and probably HSF retention clips too. Also, Dell Optiplex machines are really no better than the consumer-grade Dimensions or Inspirons!

Quite honestly, I still think that a Dell gives a solid new PC for the price. You couldn't even hope to build a comparable modern new machine with a legal Win 7 COA for the cost of their $299 and $399 specials. Also, Dell doesn't pre-load their machines with a crushing load of bloatware like HP/Compaq, Acer/Gateway or Sony, for example. And they still include a restore DVD in the box! However, whenever anyone I know buys a Dell I tell them to basically consider it a disposable appliance and to expect four-five years MAX out of it.

RE: PalmPad
hkklife @ 7/22/2010 8:02:27 AM # Q
Gekko;

Based on the links on Mike's blog, it's a S370 (likely an 810 chipset) processor-based Dell, so that makes it (at the oldest) from late 1998/early 1999, or at the newest 2001-2002ish.

Intel had gone pretty much completey Socket 478 by early 2002 or so.

There is a reason why Apple products get lavish praise. It's not because everyone is a fanboy, it's because they make good products - products that are usually better than the competition. I've always maintained the same stance - if you can afford the cost, spend the extra money to buy the Apple product.

I know two people who bought laptops last year. One bought a $1000 HP with Windows 7 and loved it, and felt smart for saving money. The other bought a $1200 MacBook Pro and loved it. A year later, one thinks it's a piece of shit that doesn't work right (already), and the other is now a regular customer. Guess which is which?

RE: PalmPad

The crap Dell is from 2003. Plastic parts just do not rot as this one did. It was defective from the start and Dell has an obligation to replace it for free. By right, there probably needs to be a damned recall if this has happened to thousands of people.

Dell just got dinged for $100M for stock fraud yesterday. Good. Show the corrupt punks for what they are.

The Nook app for Android is incredible bloatware -- over 17MBs installed! Rumor has it that they've pulled it from Android Market. Is that true?

RE: PalmPad

Gekko,

Naming a product Pad is going to cause comparisons to be made regardless.

This board is as dead as a board; some news:

1. hp will be making a non-webos tablet

2. webos 2.0 coming soon!

#1 is bad news - if hp were "doubling down" on webos, why dump a windows 7 tabet out here?

#2 - we'll have to see what this turns out to be. If this isn't successful, then this is likely Ruby's last shot....

You said HP was the most boring company. I said Dell. You posted a video of that Dell MID. I brought up that it wasn't a novel concept and brought Apple's products up as evidence. Then I drew a comparison to Silicon Valley darlings versus whitebox bullshitters who sell enterprise and are losing consumers at a rapid clip.

If you want to blanket Apple users as mindless drones, you're talking about tens of millions of users. Think about that.

Mike,
Seven year old computer. Put it in the trash before Bloomberg starts charging. You got your moneys worth. Go first class this time, Apple or Acer. Maybe HP. I just retired a Gateway I got in 1999. They're like cars, they just don't last forever. An old computer requires to much maintenance and will make your computing life miserable. You do get points for perseverence though.

Ok, 2003, so Mike's Dell is a socket 478. I've honestly seen more problems with motherboards & renention clips of that era than any other CPU (socket or slot, AMD or Intel) of any recent memory.

I attribute Mike's problem to the sub-standard Dell quality but I think a lot of the 478 problems were due to the general design of the interface (it was easy enough to fit an OEM HSF but they just didn't stand up to repeated removals & reinstallations) and probably exacerbated by the extremely high temperates of the fast clocked CPUs of that era.

Mike is your Dell a Dimension or an Optiplex? if it's an Optiplex I'd be greatly concerned about bad capacitors more so than anything else.

HAHAHAHA. You're keeping up on things.

It's a Dimension. Lovely how everybody except *Dell* admits this is a rotten part. If the damned government operated efficiently, there'd be a recall.

NFW will I *buy* that part from Dell. They can go to hell. I'll get it elsewhere if another one doesn't show up here by Monday.

And the box itself, I just learned, can apparently take more powerful CPUs.

The module rotted on its own. It was never, ever touched. The box was opened only once, to add RAM, and that went trouble-free.

The worst part about this is that after Mike grudgingly gave me his model nunber, I remembered that there is half-cannibalized Dell that's nearly identical to that one that was about to toss into the dumpster at work. It's been stripped of everything but the FDD, mobo, and PSU.

No, I don't think I'm the only source of that part, I was simply trying to help a fellow long time PIC member if in the highly likely event Dell totally blows you off. You've been bleating on PIC for days about your broken 7-year old Dell, so I thought I'd try to help! I'd make the same offer to anyone else here who I "knew" and was in need of a particular widget.

Mike, maybe HP has the patents.

Their division was acquired by Intel and then sold to Marvell (with StrongARM being renamed to XScale).
