Looks cool for internet

Piero @ 1/12/2009 6:57:46 PM # Q
Looks cool for the web but i really need garnet to make this phone work for me. Some apps they just don't create anymore... and palm gave us so much time to tweak our devices that leaving garnet feels as losing a lot and makes my everyday life a little more difficult......really!

Maybe palm should think about this

Piero @ 1/12/2009 7:12:33 PM # Q
This palm pre is an entirely different animal from what they've done before. So, no real reason to continue with palm. I think i'll wait a little longer to see what other phones come around, buy the coolest one..... and carry my palm in my coat.

LiveFaith @ 1/13/2009 10:04:44 AM # Q
A little late to think about it. The tech world has reacted more + than in many years for anything Palm. I have strong doubts that Garnet emulation, expanded clipboard, new color, and a new GUI for FrankenGarnet would have created much buz, except for a few hacks around here.

It's time to move forward. The Web OS economy will fill in all the gaps in time.

As i said it's not about late to nave thought about it, it's about apps that help me with my everyday life ans can't be ported to any other system..... besides almost everyone expected backward compatibility even Colligan stated he would have liked it in an interview on Nova.... and someone said "we anticipate solutios to do so" in the pre presentation

RE: Maybe palm should think about this
bhartman34 @ 1/14/2009 10:00:49 PM # Q
I fully expect an emulator, either from Palm themselves or from a third party, And I'd expect it sooner, rather than later. The idea of an emulator (third party) has been suggested to them in interviews, and they haven't exactly pooh-poohed the idea. And why would they? Anything that would give a person more of a reason to move to a Pre has to be a benefit to them. I really don't see a downside. The only downside would be in not allowing some kind of emulation. If they did that, they'd be forcing people to choose between the apps and data they cherish and the new shiny device (which won't come cheaply). If there's a reasonable motive for doing that, I certainly haven't heard it. Even Sony had emulation on the early PS3s, and that cost them money to do. This would basically be free for Palm, if they had someone else make the app.

RE: Maybe palm should think about this
hkklife @ 1/14/2009 10:08:03 PM # Q
Well, not to nitpick, but the early PS3s (60 & 20gb models) basically had miniatturized PS2 Emotion Engine hardware in them! It was the 80gb Metal Gear Solid bundle variant in the USA and I believe the European 60gb versions that had the PS3 emulation via a combination of hardware & software. Rumors still occasionally pop up that Sony will add software backwards compatibility for a small number of select PS2 titles to the "current" PS3s via a future firmware update but I'm not counting on this.

Getting back to Palm: If they don't do some kind Garnet emulation within 2-3 months of the Pre's retail availability, people are gonna be upset and it'll end up being provided by some kind of 3rd party such as Styletap. I do NOT expect Palm to care at all on this subject, as the Pre & WebOs represents an entirely new era for them. They're preparing to leave EVERYTHING behind in order to expedite this transition IMO.

old apps

whiteasianrose @ 1/12/2009 7:40:35 PM # Q
dude, fear not i'm sure it won't be long before a developer comes up with a shell or something that will be able to run our old palm os apps

RE: old apps
Piero @ 1/12/2009 9:07:34 PM # Q
Yes, but is there one right now? 100% operational? on any system?

RE: old apps
robitaille88 @ 1/13/2009 8:51:02 AM # Q
StyleTap, at least from what I've seen, can take a large chunk of the old apps gracefully. Plus Palm has hinted in several different demos/interviews that there may be a 3rd party emulator in the works.

RE: old apps
LiveFaith @ 1/13/2009 10:06:37 AM # Q
Styletap on Palm's own OS. Now THAT is the final nail in their coffin!

UhhOhh, wait maybe not?

Surely not.

RE: old apps
hotpaw4 @ 1/14/2009 8:42:40 AM # Q
In the future, you may have to run your old PalmOS under StyleTap on some other platform (not webOS), or on an Alps device (if they ever get a hardware company to ship). That look like your future PalmOS app support and migration path.

App Catalog

mikecane @ 1/13/2009 6:29:09 AM # Q
Too bad the screen was so washed out I couldn't actually see it.

But I liked the hint in the speaker's voice that we'll see some innovation there too.

Ryan @ 1/13/2009 9:58:00 AM # Q
sorry the vids are a little out of focus. I was still getting used to the camera and probably didn't have it on the best setting or something, youtube also blurs them a bit more with the conversion process. Plus the lighting in all of these places was obviously not ideal.
RE: App Catalog
mikecane @ 1/13/2009 10:45:28 AM # Q
I don't blame you, I blame the damned cameras. By now you'd think Sony would have realized they need to introduce a Shoot Screen Mode for cameras. (Yeah, you probably weren't using Sony, but once Sony does it, everyone else steals it.)

Two reasons for that final one:

1) The sheer *number* of apps just for one aspect of the Net

2) I wonder how many of those IM/SMS apps are actually superfluous for the Pre?

This one is very good too, with sharp images of the screen:
http://www.t3.com/ces/news/ces-2009-video-palm-pre-smartphone-hands-on?=37806&cid=OTC-RSS&attr=T3-Main-RSS

It also shows the special back of the Pre used with the Touchstone. Looks less glossy than the stock back.

Notice also the white spots that appear in the browser when using multitouch.

That's the report that stated the Pre had MicroSD slot! Look at it again! They never corrected that, either!

The Pre keyboard: a spoiler?

mikecane @ 1/13/2009 9:39:54 AM # Q
OK, let's say I go with a Pre. It could spell my doom.

Because let's say the Pre *doesn't* save Palm. Then I'd go with an iPhone.

Which has no keyboard.

Yet I might have gotten used to a damned thumbboard by then.

Yikes.

hkklife @ 1/13/2009 9:41:56 AM # Q
Buy a gently used TX and be done with it for the next year! Then if Palm's still around, drop that TracFone and go with the Pre2.

Ryan and I also fondled the Vaio P. I think he was slightly more impressed with it than I was.

I found the general formfactor to be too "wide" to tote around conveniently though the fit & finish was superb. The screen was TOO widescreen and text was a bit hard to read even for me. If it was a 10" screen on that thing and a few more vertical pixelsm then Sony might be on to something. Otherwise, I see it sort of relegated to the same high-margin, low-volume executive toy novelty niche as most of Sony's final Clies and their higher-end VARIO subnotebooks. Yawn. Asus, Acer, MSI and Lenovo have nothing to worry about!

The screen WAS lovely, though, and the keyboard and even the recessed trackpoint thingie was better than expected.

Gekko, you have to update your clips. My god, was that dated! It had *CRTs*, foot-long cellphones. And nowadays, they wouldn't retask a satellite. They'd have a Predator already deployed overhead.

All that being said, they couldn't see me run through my tunnel network! Hahahaha!

Gekko: Enemy of the Cloud State

MobileMe trial users beware - Protect your iPhone's contacts and calendar data
http://www.intomobile.com/2009/01/13/mobileme-trial-users-beware-protect-your-iphones-contacts-and-calendar-data.html

>>>A minor oversight in MobileMe's data-synchronization flow exposes trial users to the risk of losing all contacts and calendar data upon canceling the service. The bug rears its ugly head when former MobileMe users' iPhones or iPhone 3Gs attempt to synchronize emails, contacts, calendar, and other data with a canceled MobileMe account. Once a MobileMe account is terminated, all the data is deleted from the "cloud" (MobileMe's computer servers), leaving behind a "blank slate." Any iPhone that synchronizes with a canceled account will reportedly over-write its own data with this blank slate.

Hahahahaha. Sounds just like the kind of capitalistic structure Gekko favors!!

Android Market - WTF?

WTF?! Is that really *it*?

1) Crappy UI

2) Less than 30 apps?!

Where's all that "momentum" Android had?

What about all that "open source" BS? (Yeah, that helped with Nokia's Maemo too! *snort*)

What about all those hundreds of thousands of G1 phones that were sold? These are the apps people can buy!?
