Comments on: More Pre Hacks and Inner Details Revealed

Pre HackingSeems like every time you turn around lately, a great new Pre hack has been discovered and lovingly documented for all the world to see. Originally created in the wake of Tuesday's release of the webOS Doctor tool, the Pre dev wiki has gone from blank slate to treasure trove, bursting at the seams with juicy modding goodness.

Intrepid hackers have accomplished everything from custom Universal Search engines to unlocking the three-page limitation in the Launcher, but the most truly impressive achievement thus far is the ability to directly install the 1700+ Optware Linux command-line packages - all without interfering with Palm's own built-in webOS applications.

Read on for a full list of what we hope will soon be easily-installed mods for all - including the latest on the Holy Grail of tethering. (In the meantime, if you're an experienced Linux user or just feeling adventurous, you can attempt it yourself.)

>>>all you need is root access

Yeah, good luck with that. *flashback to Nokia 770 nightmares*

You must mean the MAC steps.

OK, so "pretty simple" might be taking it a bit far. "Relatively simple for the tech-savvy on Windows"?

The linux steps are even simpler than the Mac steps - there's only one! (This "TBD" thing must be some kind of super-hacking tool. ;) )

I will buy/upgrade my plan when tethering comes. Truthfully. I suspect I will use less bandwidth than I currently do with my regular on device surfing- I just want a reliable backup for my home network and an option when I am out and about.

I love what I am hearing about all this hacking/app development.

Soon it looks like the only thing sorely missing will be infrared rremote control and a microsd slot.

Palm just "cracked down", not on tethering, but on tethering discussions!
