Protect Yourself from Bad Apps with Guard Dog

Posted By: Ed on Wednesday, September 06, 2000 2:19:57 PM

In the wake of the recent furor over the Liberty Crack trojan horse, McAfee has released Guard Dog for Palm, that prevents rogue applications from viewing, stealing or deleting data. It lets users decide what applications are trustworthy and prevents those that are not from accessing sensitive information. It also continuously monitors the device, searching for specific actions and immediately notifying the user of any strange or malicious behavior. This available now and is a free addition to their wireless security center, a subscription to which costs $29.95 per year.

Guard Dog for Palm looks for application launches, infrared beaming, power on/off events, database and record creation/deletion, password monitoring, and preferences changes.

the article doesn't go far enought. It doesn't say anything about cost or availability.

Their press release also lacked these. I've already asked McAfee these same questions and I'll update the article when I hear back from them. When I was writing the article, I looked at their site and Guard Dog for Palm doesn't appear to be available yet so, for right now, the answers are "No amount of money" and "Not Yet". ; - )

Nice idea - how much precious RAM does it require?

I wonder how it prevents apps which bypass the OS from modifying memory. I don't think that's really possible. - Palm programmer

I use my Palm Vx as part of my life not just my job. With the Vx, a modem, and a keyboard I can do anything I want. Heck I give my kids my Palm to play games on vacation when they are bored!
