10 NYC Cabs Go Wireless with Palm VII

Yahoo! Inc. and Medallion Financial Corp. have placed Palm VIIs in 10 cabs in New York City. The taxis will be painted in Yahoo!'s yellow and purple colors and even the interiors are purple. The VIIs will be on strong cables and passengers can use them for free. They are loaded with PQAs to let passengers look up weather, sports reports, news and soon the latest stock prices. The cabs will hit the streets next week.

"The Internet used to be just for people at their desktops, then their laptops. But this program is really about getting the Internet where you need it most, on the road, on the go," Linda Bennett, brand manager for Yahoo!.

"Strong Cables"

I saw those "Strong Cables" securing the Palm VIIs on the news - they won't last a day. Don't they know all New Yorkers carry wire cutters w/them at all times?

I know they had some in San Francisco until March of this year. I'm not clear on whether this is a publicity stunt or if they are running tests for a wider roll-out.

The Palms aren't durable enough for such public use...

In one week, they'll be so scratched and messed up you wouldn't want to use one.
