Microsoft Still Considering .NET for Palm

Posted By: Ed on Friday, October 20, 2000 11:39:14 AM

Back in July, Microsoft CEO and President Steve Ballmer told the Fusion conference that under its future ASP-oriented .Net architecture, Microsoft will extend wireless access to the Palm OS. At this week's Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo 2000 conference., Mr. Ballmer said, ""No offense to the Pocket PC, but we might need to bring .Net services to Palm and other devices." He emphasized that .NET "might" be ported to the Palm OS.

Over the past few months, Microsoft has been talking up its "software as a service" plan, which it calls .Net. This will involve removing many Microsoft applications from desktop hard drives and instead have them served by an Application Service Provider (ASP), either over a company's internal network or over the Internet.
